RE: holding the severed self {m} - Veho - Jun 19, 2017

“Ah.”

To think it would be easy this time!  If not a tornado, than surely some other tragedy.  They had been so worried about Ophelia, and here she was.  The only child that remained.  So the alpha slithered in slowly once he was beckoned, hovering near the mouth of the den as his eyes adjusted.  The two females remained cuddled close, with one happy, hungry cub suckling at his mother’s teat – and one deformed, twisted corpse that could have never sustained life for more than a few minutes, if it had ever sustained life at all.  It had happened to his parents, all of their cubs like this.  Some smaller than others.

“I am sorry, Oula.  So very sorry.”

There was nothing he could do, or say, to ease the ache of whatever she was feeling.  To lose a child was surely the worst thing.  And so he said nothing, only touched their muzzles in a silent moment of support before regarding the poor pup once more.  “Would you like me to bury her?”  He could, at the very least, make sure she found her way to where the Ancestors were.  That she was not lonely in her next life.  That she was taken care of, so Oula could take care of her boy, and herself.  It was the least he could do for his friend.

Fade.
