I can't take it in - Mouse - Jun 21, 2017

RE: Spring showers have come early, resulting in heavy downpours throughout parts of Relic Lore.

June 21st (Summer Solstice!); Early afternoon; Patchy rain possible; 67 ° F, 19 ° C.

Mouse, at a month old, was not much to look at despite being 5 pounds (or 2.3 kg) heavier than he was at birth with his eyes and ears open and all. His ears were bear-like, tall and way too big for his head and his limbs were still stumpy as ever, but as far as he was concerned, they did just fine. For a human toddler-aged pup, though, most things were "fine," but most of the time, simple things were merely wondrous and easily awe-striking.

Today, the little roly-poly cub pretended to go down for his nap. Layind down, back-to-back with his sister Merida, he just closed his eyes and waited for his mother to leave. Behind his mousy lids, the dim light filtering into the bear den grew dark before coming back again - a sign that @Amaryllis had left. One pale blue eye opened before the other and he lifted his head. His tongue stuck out from between his lips as he carefully peeled himself from his twin's side. Hopefully she wouldn't miss his warmth or realize he was missing anytime soon. For once, he just wanted to see what was so different about today. The great big Outside wasn't as bright as it usually was and, in the air, a scent of something new came on the winds.

He wriggled like a worm on his tummy until he could confidently find all four of his feet beneath him. Short tail wagging and ears forward, Mouse popped his head fully out of the den. He immediately shut his eyes and blinked; it was a bit cooler out here than it was inside and, most definitely, brighter. He inhaled and exhaled as though he were gasping for air, his mind attempting to take in all the new scents all at once. His lips parted to accommodate his little curled tongue in-between pants. This was all so exciting!

Or, well, it was exciting until he realized that his mother was nowhere in sight. Pitiful. After all that time he thought he'd have a grand ol' time, he let out a small whine. He was by himself - even just knowing that Merida being asleep in the darkness behind him did nothing to soothe his newfound fears. He shakily gave the air another sniff, leaning forward a bit as if that would bring his mother's scent to him, an announcement that she was on her way back. But, then, PLOP!

Something so sudden and cold hit his nose, then his forehead, his ear, and the fur just below his right eye. Mouse instinctively shook his head, wildly peering around in attempt to figure out who or what was doing such a startling thing. He barked at the sky when another raindrop fell on the bridge of his nose. Then, all too suddenly, the cold stuff was everywhere, pouring from the sky above from a place that the little Lyall couldn't even see.

Overwhelmed beyond his limits, Mouse began to cry. He should have stayed inside.
