Sphinx Avalon
Mommy daughter thread for @Jessie || Fog 53 ° F, 12 ° C - Late Morning/Early Afternoon
Soft amber eyes watched disinterestedly with a heavy sigh from just outside the pack den as the fog continued to roll through the area of their lowland home, the usual brilliant hues of gold that glistened in the afternoon sun like silk with each gust of a breeze now dulled to nothing more than pale yellow beneath this blanket of semi transparent white. What a boring day it was and with her dad still away on a business trip she was expected all the more to keep a close eye on her troublesome brother, but of course, today would be the one day they chose to take a vacation from causing mischief and sleep in a couple extra hours. And they called her the lazy one.

Another huff left Sphinx's lips and she gave a small swat of her paw at the well-gnawed bone that lay nestled between her outstretched forelimbs. The latest addition to her collection of objects she had to wrestle free from her brothers after surprise surprise they had begun to fight over who deserved to chew on it next that day. Gosh, why did boys have to be such trouble all the time and that led to the young Avalon wondering how mama handled not only her siblings but ALL the boys in the pack. Next time she saw her she'd have to ask.

Jessie had always enjoyed it when fog rolled in. It always offered an eerie sort of peace to the petite woman and she had found solace in it when she wanted to be alone. It also gave a certain advantage when she wanted to go hunting, because it was easier to catch her prey unaware – though there were also disadvantages to go along with it. There was something particularly unsettling, however, about the way the fog settled across her fields and it caused an unsettling feeling to set in the pit of the Rye Queen’s stomach. Had Drestig been back from his little trip abroad – in which Jessie desperately wished he would be soon – the Tainn would have immediately sought him out. Perhaps, even looked for comfort in his embrace. Instead, the pepper-and-salt colored woman’s nose was close to the dry golden ground, searching for any sign of her children.

A light wind whispered against her ear in the same instant she inhaled, her daughter’s scent, along with others, filling his nostrils. A small smile twitched onto the mother’s lips and she quickly changed directions towards the pack den. Out of all her children, Sphinx was the most well-behaved, and most like Jessie. The youngest daughter of the Rye Queen kept her brothers in check when others weren’t around and it went much appreciated by the mother. There was only so much she could do with so much that was going on. As she neared, Jessie’s tail swayed happily behind her, emerald eyes softening when her daughter’s black and white form came into view. The woman’s voice was soft when  she spoke, “Sphinx, I’m surprised you’re not enjoying the cool weather.” While her daughter was calmer than her sons, it did not mean she didn’t play every now and then. And Jessie remembered when she was a child, that during cool weather was when everyone was most active.

The thought of her mother must have been a powerful one for shortly after her mind had begun to drift away from the one who brought her into this world the very same creature emerged from the fog like a ghost, her soft spoken voice startling the unsuspecting child. Batty ears pivoted toward the sound of her mother's voice and soft amber eyes shifted to find the older woman's face, a warm-hearted smile tugging back the corner of her lips while her tail gave a few swishes in greeting. A small shrug to answer the salt and peppered queen where Sphinx's words could not. Another common practice she had picked up from her mother alongside the hushed movements of her paws.

It wasn't that she didn't enjoy this cooler weather for it was a nice break from the sun that made her dark body grow hot really fast, she just didn't know what to do today. To prove her point she nudged the bone she had between her paws away with the tip of her snout and flopped onto her back, an exasperated sigh leaving her lips. "I'm bored Mama." She confessed finally, staring up into the upside down face of her mother that looked kinda funny from this angle. Tail swishing behind her and stirring some of the loose leaves and fallen stalks of rye that other members had tracked back toward the den during their daily outings.

Cottongrass tended to bring back the most. Oh! Speaking of that guy it clicked that she wanted to ask mama something. "Why are boys trouble?" It was the most innocent intended question, but surely it would catch any mother off guard to hear their precious daughters speak of boys so soon.

Her daughter’s reaction to her greeting warmed the mother’s heart. Emerald eyes softened and Jessie closed the distance between mother and daughter. Sphinx took after Jessie in that she seemed to prefer actions rather than words. At least, Jessie hoped that was what it was. It would surely get her daughter further in life when she got older. The monochrome woman watched in amusement as her daughter rolled onto her back only after nudging the bone she had forward. Her confession stirred something within Jessie. Shouldn’t it be her job to make sure her children were not bored? Were her sons still sleeping? Who was she kidding, of course, they were. The swish of leaves brought the mother’s attention back towards the Avalon child.

Just as Jessie was about to suggest that they play together, her daughter asked a question she wasn’t expecting. Certainly not from her daughter, only three months of age. Eyebrows instantly furrowed and Jessie’s mind thought of the worst. Why would Sphinx ask such a thing? Jessie would ask first and then interrogate – no ask nicely. She didn’t want to scare her daughter. She licked her lips before she spoke, “Well, no matter how grown up they get, Silva, they never mature. They always remain children on the inside.” The mother paused then – only for a moment – before continuing. “Why? Is there a boy bothering you?” If it was someone from the Monadnock back Jessie would have no problem having ass over and having a nice chat with Wraith about child etiquette.

Her bordism became a thought of the distant past as her upside down frame righted itself to properly face her mother and give the monochrome woman the full attention she deserved and demanded in her silent, authoritative way while answering the young child's curiosity inspired question. It was made known that despite how old they got they never truly lose that title of trouble they inherited at birth and this newly obtained knowledge had Silva's eyes widening partially in fascination and further stimulated curiosity. Well, if boys never stopped being trouble what did that mean for her? Was she going to be trouble for the rest of her life too?

Before the speckled child could ask such questions for her all knowing mother to answer there was a question left to hang on the air for her to answer and confusion momentarily washed over her young, delicate facial features, head tilting enough to allow her batty ears to flop toward one side. "Nuh uh. Except Griff and Kasai. They always make trouble and I fix it." She admitted, but it couldn't possibly be news to the mother the angst and trouble those two caused on a near daily basis. Somebody had to keep those two little devils in line when an adult couldn't and who better than their sis?

Her daughter, the picture of innocence. Nothing had come to take away that part of her daughter and Jessie was going to try her damn hardest to ensure that it stayed intact for as long as able. Her frown curled up into a smile at Silva’s answer, an amused snort leaving the Rye Queen’s maw at the truthfulness of it all. “Unfortunately, I’m afraid that’s how it will be for most of your life. That’s just how boys are.” Always going around and fixing it. Even though her daughter was young and her statement innocent enough; it summed up Jessie’s position in leadership pretty clearly.
