The hunt could have ended in failure—she knew that. Many of her solo hunts had resulted in defeat, the sullen girl stalking back to the mountain with heavy shoulders and an empty stomach. But the more she practiced the better she became. The Aurora pack was small, and with her cousins passing over the mountain Revon knew there would be less prey available. Which meant every hunt had to be successful. There could be no exceptions. Not if her parents’ pack wanted to survive through the winter.

Her packmate’s voice lulled her away from her thoughts, her triumphant smile widening at the older male’s words of praise. Lightning. The word made her paws buzz with excitement. She placed the rabbit at her paws, her fiery gaze fixated on the crimson-stained creature. Her stomach rumbled. Y’think we could find another one? She asked, her head tipping to the side as she redirected her gaze to her companion. The scarlet Archer wouldn’t mind a bite or two, but she also did not want to return to the heights without another rabbit dangling from her jaws.

look what you made me do

He felt pretty sure she'd just eat her kill and enjoy it. Who could resist a fresh kill? If she was anything like him when he was a pup, she was hungry on the time. Instead quite thoughtfully she asked about getting another. He didn't think her selfish, but for being so young it seemed a small miracle she wasn't. Especially, as an only child of a small pack that had done much to keep her. Then again he didn't imagine Kyna or Greer raising a spoiled brat. Instead he saw a young leader with greater knowledge than most adults.

His grin did not vanish, but his brows drew in thought. "Don't see why not. I can go back to digging at that burrow see if anything else comes out?" He offered, as what would it hurt to check? If it was truly empty they knew it wasn't a rabbit fortress. "This time you might want to get closer." He stationed himself, waiting for her to let him know she was ready.

Her fiery gaze did not waver from her dark packmate as she waited for his response, the rabbit at her paws temporarily forgotten. If he was not in the mood to hunt a second time Revon would not push—she could always attempt another hunt, on her own, before returning to the mountain. Having help, however, was far more appealing and easier.

Fortunately she did not have to wait long for a response. Her tail wagged slowly at his response, a wide, toothy grin spreading across her cream maw. Sure! She chirped in response, maybe a little too eager. If y’don’t mind, she added, her voice a little more subdued as her ears fell to the side, a sheepish expression rolling onto her scarlet features. If the burrow was empty the little Archer would accept defeat and return to her first prize. But it was worth a shot.

She padded toward the entrance of the den as Summiter returned to his previous position. She met his slate-coloured gaze for a brief moment as she gave a sharp nod to signal that she was ready. Revon had taken his advice and shuffled closer to the entrance, her elbows bent as she poised herself for the attack…

"Course not!" What was there to mind? He was helping her out, just like he wished someone had done for him. She seemed more than grateful.  For some reason he couldn't quite imagine any of the other Heights wolf obliging. Not like this. Most "adults" seemed to just bark directions. Hardly making it fun, or leaving the effort to the kid.

When she was positioned for the next run, he threw his paws to work again. Hoping for her sake there was another rabbit who would come out. He'd look pretty good, helping her hunt and bring two rabbits back to the pack.

Her tail wagged excitedly behind her as the dark male obliged to her request and returned to his position behind the den. Almost immediately the girl readied herself, her chest lowered to the ground as her brows pinched tight in determination. Returning with one rabbit wouldn’t be bad, but it’d be even better if they could have two hanging from their jaws. Her parents would be so proud of her—and Summiter too! She could hear the dark male set into work, his paws working feverishly at the dirt to scare another rabbit out of the dark. Her fiery gaze remained fixated on the dark hole, saliva pooling between her teeth as she waited for another to show… and fortunately she did not have to wait long. The rabbit bounded forward, wide-eyed and bushy-tailed as it searched for an escape route, but Revon was too quick. She lunged forward once more, her paws outstretched as she aimed for the creature’s back. As she met her mark her jaws snapped forward, closing around the rabbit’s neck…

We can head home now! She called out to her hunting partner, her tail wagging proudly behind her as she waited for him to return from his position. Y’did good, kid, she joked with a sharp wink before nudging one of the rabbit’s limp body in his direction. C’mon, bet I can beat you there! Quickly she scooped up the first rabbit before bolting forward, to the mountain… Fade.
