Her heart felt lighter with every moment passed, warmth spreading in her chest, which had been numb for so long. She knew she had no claim on the boy, Chan had given him to Finley, where he could have a brother and a family free of the taint of sorrow; As it should be…! But that didn’t mean that Flair could not help, offer up her time and experience to shoulder some of the burden – and just maybe, get to feel more useful and less miserable in the process. After all, raising pups took a whole pack, maybe if she’d realized that sooner, things would have turned out different.
She actually chuckled at Caspian’s mimicry, nodding her head encouragingly. As he took the lemming between his baby teeth, she let him test out his strength against the bones and tough skin, smiling warmly at his antics. Once he’d assured himself that he needed the help, he willingly turned over the prize for Flair to deal with.
Crouching down, she made sure the boy had a clear view as she bit into the lemming, tearing the skin open. “Once y’ teeth grow bigger, y’ll be able t’ do all this yerself,” She explained, as she tore off a small strip of meat and chewed it carefully, before offering it to the pup. She remembered watching her mother do the same for her little brothers – her own first taste of meat had been to early for the memory to stick. Still, it felt good to get to pass that on at least, even if it was a small thing. And as she chewed her own piece of meat, while watching the boy with his, she felt just a tiny glimmer of felicity.
