The pain drew him out of the blackness, wrapping around his skull and tearing at his left shoulder. He drew a few shallow, utterly painful breaths before he dared to even try and open his eyes. Pain raged through his body and he felt a warm sticky wetness coating the entire left side of his head. What had happened? He remembered falling... Wait...did he fall? Where was he? Why was he in so much pain?
Now panic raged through him, joining the overwhelming pain in his head and shoulder. He lifted his head quickly, without thinking, to look above him. There was a wolf looking down at him, calling to him, but the words were all garbled in his head and made no sense. He only met the gaze for a moment before the pain and dizziness was too much. Blackness overtook him as he passed out once more with the question, Who was that wolf? repeating itself until his body lay limp and nearly lifeless on the cold and merciless rocky ledge, now darkened by his blood....
