RE: It's Where I Belong - Evann - Jan 05, 2014
[dohtml]
And if I bleed, I'll bleed,
Knowing you don't care!
The scent of what had led the observer astray was beginning to enter Evanns nose, and she fought to ignore it and keep her focus on the man before her, even though her every fiber screamed for her to follow the temptation. Yet she stayed put, straightening herself like a soldier being called to attention, when the alpha spoke again. And his words, through their hard tone and cold delivery, were the sweetest of all to her ears; "you want to prove yourself?" YES! Yes that was all she wanted! To let action speak where words fell short, after all, what was words more than air, even if spoken with the truest intent?
So she flipped up her ear-tips, following the lord's gaze to the silver figure in the shadows. It was with no small amount of surprise that the young girl received his orders; A test?! But she didn't let the astonishment touch her face, instead she met his golden eyes, answering his sneer with the slightest twitch of one corner of her mouth; a test was all she wanted. As the mottled man moved away, she stayed her position, for the first time since arrival with her back straight, her nostrils flaring as she zeroed in on the pray in question, but eyes never straying from the king until he gave his command and disappeared among the trees.
Then she set in motion, legs aching all the way to the bone, a momentary haze moving over her eyes; but she ignored it, knowing full well that she would have to give her all in order to impress these wolves, or likely die if she failed. But I WONT! She moved towards the other wolf, this Silver Dagger , head and shoulders still low, but more for the purpose of the hunt than in tribute to the other; Shows of submission will have to wait!
And the other huntress seemed to agree, setting her nose and eyes to the trail before Evann had fully caught up. The brown girl fell in steps with her, stretching her legs in a steady trot, eyes searching the ground and snout the air in their hunt. Rabbit was the pray, and her stomach churned at the smell, but she ignored it along with all other signs of fatigue, they had been instructed to hunt for the pack cashes, and so they would; And any personal gain must wait! So she turned off her thoughts as best she could and zoned in on the task before her, wearing out to a slightly different path than her companion to cover more ground and cause less friction. And the trail was easy to follow, where the scent died out, the snow lend a hand, small groups of prints showing easily in the soft cover.
After some tracking they came to an area where the scent was not only strong, but layered on older marks, signifying a heavily travelled region; or a den-site. Evann slowed her movement and scanned the area, locating a small opening under some tangled bushes not far ahead. The key would be to scare them out and pounce on them quickly, before they had time to build up speed. Burrows like this usually had more than one entrance though, so they would need to be sure their prey came out of the right hole. Stopping up in the cover of the trees, she looked to her hunting partner, waiting for her to make the first move; so she then could know which position to take.

RE: It's Where I Belong - Sagacity - Jan 06, 2014
[dohtml] The warren couldn't be far away. One of Sagacity's silver ears flicked back as she heard the woman approach, but she didn't turn her head, focused instead on the trail she was following. Like most rabbits, these ones avoided being out in the open and therefore made it a bit harder for her to simply pinpoint where they were- a hole in the middle of a field was easy to see, but if they'd chosen to stick to hedges and the like when living in the woodland and likely had several escape burrows. It wasn't until they'd tracked for a bit that Sagacity took note of a fairly well-trodden trail which led from beneath a thicket of tall, dead-looking goldenrod plants. She stopped in her tracks and sought Evann's eye, before she gestured that the woman go ahead and lay in wait there.
Her brief instructions given, Sagacity moved away, in search of another den, one with a rabbit somewhere nearby, and with a bit of luck, she found one. The rabbit was a few feet outside of the den so Sagacity had to creep forward as much as she could, knowing that one false move and it would bolt into the den. That was where she needed it to go, but she didn't want it to escape her clutches. The chase was short and sweet, and ended just as she'd planned- she caught the rabbit by its haunches just as it made the entrance of the den and it let out a loud squeal. It continued to scrabble and dig and try to get away from her, making quite a ruckus just inside the den but Sagacity simply allowed it to do so- these sounds would frighten the other rabbits in the warren and hopefully send one or two scuttling for their well-traveled exit. And if I bleed, I'll bleed,
Knowing you don't care!
One look and the faintest move of her head was all it took. Even though they hadn't hunted together before, these signs were universal, the smallest tremor of an ear could communicate a million things among wolves. Evann nodded ever so slightly to indicate understanding, then she moved swiftly to take her position.
The area around the den opening was trampled snow, offering no cover of significance; The main entrance then... Meaning that, hopefully, any rabbits within the burrow would come out this way, should something frighten them enough to make them leave their den. That was her partner's headache though, so the brown wolfess instead focused on finding a good spot to lie in wait of the fleeing animals. After studying the area for a moment, she decided to settle above the hole. There was just enough room among the goldenrod stalks for her slight frame, and it was the only place where she could be sure not to be seen from within the tunnel.
So she settled in, ears perked, legs ready to leap, like tightly curled springs; holding her breath to avoid any movement and sound. Her elevated position provided an excellent opportunity to pounce on the rabbit when it came out of its den, non expectantly, but she would have to be quick, or it would run straight under her and disappear in the forest.
A squeal sounded through the forest, loudly audible in the absolute silence; Here we go! She snapped a quick breath and listened intently, feeling for any sign of movement in the ground beneath her. If she could get two, that would prove her worth; Don't go too far Ev! She was certainly capable of the feat, she'd done it before, but in her current state... Risking it all to try and catch two rabbits might mean she'd get none.
A wave of sound rippled through her, rumbling up through her legs from the tunnel below; No more time to think! Focusing her eyes directly on the opening beneath her, she waited, and as soon as the first hint of movement showed, she jumped. With a powerful thrust of her hind legs, she set off from the goldenrod thicket and came down, forelegs first, crushing the small body under her weight; which, though it was impaired by the harsh winter, was still much heavier than the small creature could carry. Without pausing, or checking to see if the rabbit was fully incapacitated, she spun around, snapping out after the next little creature, which, in its panic, ran straight into her jaws before even noticing them. She clamped tight, canines piercing skin and the sweet taste of blood filling her mouth.
The taste of food, after so long, made her dizzy, eyes fogging up, legs threatening to give in beneath her. She fought to retain full consciousness, while hints of black started creeping into her vision, and in the midst of all this, she felt something scramble between her paws. When spinning around, most of her weight had been taken off her first victim, distributing amongst her legs, which she spread out for stability, and the rabbit had gotten free. Now, despite surly having several broken bones, the creature fought for survival, trying to get away to safety.

RE: It's Where I Belong - Sagacity - Jan 10, 2014
-wrapping this up so you can get added/titled/etc. :)
[dohtml] The rabbit that Sagacity had seized continued to squirm and shriek until she felt that she'd done her job in scaring the others. She couldn't see Evann but she could hear the sound of action coming from her general area, and felt quite sure that a kill had been made. Once things quieted down, Sagacity made short work of killing the hare she'd caught before she made her way around the short distance of brush between the two of them.
She was surprised to see Evann with her legs shaking and spread, looking exhausted. She had a rabbit- but another was making its way away from her at a slow speed, its hind legs nearly useless from what could have easily been diagnosed as a back injury. She gave a short look to the woman who looked as though she was ready to pass out, dropped her rabbit and went after the other. Given that it was exhausted and lame, it took the silver dagger little time to catch up to it and put it out of its misery. Satisfied with the work that had been done, she picked it up and carried it back toward Evann- but she did not present it to the other wolf. Had she been capable of carrying all three hares, she would have taken the one still in the dark lady's clutch. Instead, she moved toward the one she'd caught and dropped the other on the ground beside it.
"Your admission to the pack will be your reward. I'll show you to the communal den; you can leave the hare there for the leaders." She said, making it very clear that though she'd caught the rabbit she possessed and had definitely made it possible to catch the third one between the two of them, they were not hers to eat. No, she'd proved herself worthy of joining the pack- and that would have to suffice. The hare would be a gift to the leaders from their newest member. "Come." She said, and picked up the two other rabbits, expecting Evann to pick up her own and follow suit. They'd exchange names and such later- right now, it was more important to get her settled in and give two of the rabbits to the leaders- the third would be claimed by the scout. [/dohtml]
