Intrepid daring - Ruuqo - Aug 10, 2015

Ruuqo rounded the cliff wall and came to a great pool into which tons of whitewater fell over a hundred-foot slide. She stood motionless in awe. It was the thunder of this fall she had been hearing from the last half-mile. The pool was churned into a boiling white at the base of the fall, shading off through tints of aquamarine to the dark holes at the edges. The walls rose up topped with rich and fragrant loam in which an endless variety of ferns and mosses and small forest flowers were embedded , making a lush and fragrant carpet around the boles of the tree trunks. Slowly the yearlings eyes moved from stop to spot, taking in every detail of the scene. Across the stream, in the deep water under the cliff, the sun threw a patch of amber and there was the dark shape of a monster trout lurking. Below the pool, that clutter of short logs and saplings was surely the remains of a beaver dam. She saw two sleek heads swimming – they dived under the dam – beaver or musk-rat? Dozens of brilliantly barred rainbow trout leaped in the foam at the base of the fall as if it attempting to scale that mighty mountain of water. Birds and squirrels flitted through the trees of the river bank, and far off Ruuqo saw five deer moving silently. They turned and looked at her, then leaped away and vanished.

Almost oppressed by such grandeur, Ruuqo threw her head back and looked upward. Far above was a strip of blue sky and a spcek floating in it – a great bird on motionless spread wings. She felts as if she were in the bowels of the earth. The undisturbed light fell upon her lustrous atramentous pelt  and onto her now prepossessing upturned face.

That excitement felt by all wolves, compounded of fear and curiosity and intrepid daring, upheld her. She must go on.

@Ruuqo

-slaps self- Sorry, I meant to post here days ago!

The evening sunlight fell in warm, dappled patches over the wolf's back. A black nose was set just over the ground as pale feet swept easily over a carpet of red-cedar needles and verdant ferns. The air was warm and humid. Delicate ferns reached out to stroke a pelt of cream and gray, while the scent of evergreen rose heavy into the air. Iopah skimmed along as the needles were covered by an increasing cacophony of plant-life. The Falls roared a familiar lullaby that her ears flickered randomly to. But, it was not the waterfall nor the plant-life that drew her. Iopah was following a herd of deer.

She'd come across their cloven-hoofed tracks at the borders and set off after them. Even with the recent disappearances, there were enough adults around. @Nova was still along the border, and so she left the Pines with a light heart. Golden eyes lifted to search for the herd. It was a hunt, but not of the ordinary intention. She could tell, from the scent, that at least one of these does were nursing. It was the fawn she was after. Small enough to drag back single-handed, and non-threatening enough for the Broken Timber Pines pups to get their first look at live prey.

Ahead, in the distance, she saw movement. Her herd of deer turning as one to watch something. Iopah stopped as well. The scent was wrong for her to catch wind of Ruuqo; when the deer bolted she was puzzled. Hurriedly, she loped after them, till the sight of another wolf stopped her. Tail twitched level with her spine as she considered. This was not her land and they were not her deer (not matter how much she might want them). There was no claim to reinforce here, but neither was she going to fade into the shadows. Her chin lifted to chuff at the wolf and tail swirled hopefully by her hocks.
