Swift River Pack Thread - Rihael - Jul 18, 2011

July 18, night

Rihael clambered awkwardly out from the den, oversize paws and skinny limbs carrying him into the tree-filtered moonlight. He wasn't planning on going far, but had awoken from a long nap and was quickly bored of just lazing around. Nighttime was another world to him; the colors of everything around him were subdued, and though he knew his surroundings didn't change when day turned to night, he felt some sort of wonder at how differently the trees and their shadows appeared under the silver moon. Enjoying the sound of crickets chirping and the soft breeze that rustled his tawny coat, the puppy fell to a seat at the den's entrance, taking in the sounds and smells of evening with a peaceful smile.

Swift River Pack Thread - Faolán - Sep 08, 2011

September 8, afternoon

Faolán had first become aware of the pups upon meeting Indru. Back then he had been too occupied with submitting to the more dominant male to ponder on the idea of younger pack mates being around. But now that he had officially been accepted into the Swift River ranks, excitement and curiosity got the better of him. The young male had no experience with pups; he and his siblings had always been the youngest. The thought of interacting with the newest additions to the pack filled him with delight – perhaps finally he would find company in someone that was too small and inexperienced to judge. To them he would simply be a play-thing, he was sure. Play was something the young male missed and so he found himself compelled to wander cautiously towards the entrance of the den where he could smell the scent of the pups and their mother inside. Amber eyes peered into the darkness as his nose slowly reached out sniff softly at the crumbling dirt walls. A small yip echoed against the den walls as he waited anxiously, hoping that it would not be their mother who he had gone and disturbed.

Swift River Pack Thread - Marsh - Sep 08, 2011

Swift River was going from strength to strength. Marsh, it seemed, hadn't been the last to return - and not the last to join afresh. The scent of a newcomer, accepted by Indru, was already around the lands, and Marsh was curious to meet this submissive-smelling male.

He hadn't expected to meet him like this, apparently keen to interrupt the pack's mother and young. Marsh, who had been standing nearby and keeping watch over the sleeping litter. This upstart was fortunate that Corinna was currently absent - but that didn't mean Marsh would permit the disturbance of the infants unless they were prepared to play. They weren't newborns anymore, but no less in need of protection. Besides, this wolf had yet to prove anything about himself.

At the sound of the yip, Marsh stepped forwards, having watched the den carefully from the outside. His eyes narrow and a low growl rumbling from his throat, he advanced another step and silently demanded explanation. New or not, who was he to impose himself on Swift River's valuable young generation?

His call for play seemed to go unnoticed as the echoes slowly subsided into silence. He had hoped that a pup would have squeaked in reply but now he stood, thoroughly disappointed, with his tail dangling meekly at his heels. He sniffed the den again. Perhaps the pups were asleep. He had been about to investigate further when a low growl struck his ears, causing his knees to buckle instantly into a crouch. Large ears fell back slowly as his tail curled tightly between his legs. Someone had spotted his intrusion on the den and he turned around slowly to stare at the large paws that stood firmly behind him. He kept his eyes downcast, needing no facial recognition to confirm that he was now being confronted by a much more dominant individual. His muscles tensed and a loud whine left his lips as he once again resorted to a wry toothy ‘grin’. ”S-sorry!”

Swift River Pack Thread - Marsh - Sep 08, 2011

Fortunately, the pups hadn't been disturbed - though it would have taken more than a yip to awaken them, their previous play session had gone on so long. Marsh knew he didn't have nearly that much energy anymore, and it had been a relief when they had agreed to sleep.

That was, probably, at least part of why he was so irritable now. Did this newcomer not know how much easier it was to watch children when they were unconscious? If he wanted to be introduced to the litter, then he would have to do so through Corinna, there was no other way about it.

The stammered apology barely broke his train of thought. It was clearer than ever that this visit was the product of a thoughtless whim, and Marsh was not about to abide that. Marsh's posture naturally adjusted to assume the more dominant role, and he lunged forward to feint a bite at the lower's ankles with a more 'encouraging' growl. Imbecile.

Faolán kept his eyes trained on the male, watching all limbs carefully for any signs of sudden movement. Amber eyes skimmed along the stiff height of the male’s tail and immediately felt overwhelmed with anticipation and fear. His vision blinked up to quickly capture a pair of forward-facing ears. It was those ears along with the stiff movement of the dominant individual that had the young male reeling; signs of aggression were not easily missed by Faolán. The young male dared not to move for fear that if he did the punishment would only come sooner. Instead his eyes dropped back down to the floor and his fur flattened to make him appear all the more small and insignificant. He had no intention of harming the young pups, but then, this male had no way of telling that – and so, he was obliged to protect the pups from harm.

As seconds ticked by, locked in a state of high tension, Faolán attempted to step away from the den and abandon his curiosity. Movements were slow and exaggerated as he cautiously tip-toed forwards out of the way – but it seemed he wasn’t moving fast enough! The male lunged and grabbed at the young male’s ankle, sharp fangs grazing firmly against his tender skin. Faolán flinched and immediately yanked back his leg, releasing a loud yelp as he struggled to break free. A loud growl silenced him, but he was released all the same – left to scamper off, as fast as his legs would carry him. He didn’t dare glance back; scared that, who ever the male was, wouldn’t be so forgiving next time.

Swift River Pack Thread - Indru - Sep 08, 2011

[dohtml]
September 8th, late afternoon

Fresh scents lingered around the dens entrance and though Indru could still smell those they belonged to in the air suggesting they were still near they were not in sight. Quietly he crept to the den's entrance, a small soothing sigh escaping him as the tiny sounds of his children sleeping travelled up to him. The pack's cache was filling up steadily with the influx of life returning to the pack and Indru found that the best way to help his recovery was to use the limbs that were healing and keep them moving so hunting small prey in the Grove had become a daily habit. His most recent success, a few mice, were now dropped by the edge of the caves entrance as a planned gift for his pups who needed all the nourishment they could get.

The sky was starting to darken just enough to signify that the afternoon was close to ending and so Indru lowered himself down outside the den's entrance, his bulk casually keeping the precious contents inside protected and settled his head down upon his paws.

Swift River Pack Thread - Triell - Sep 08, 2011

when i look at the stars i feel like myself

The black Tainn should not be bored, but he was. He had scouted the good part of the morning all alone, and felt so bored he felt tired, sleepy. Or maybe he just felt older, and worn out by all the comings, and goings. His paws shuffled along the ground, his ears not up, but flatted backward. He should be doing something productive, but he really was just lonely and not in the greatest of spirits. His lips tug down in a frown, and he heaves out a loud puff of air agitated with himself. His black paws slowly drag him back to the den, and he hopes to escape the hot sun before returning back to check the Grove once more.

A dim smile lights his face, wondering if the puppies might be awake. Upon closer inspection he sees their large father outside the den, resting and guarding at the same time. Triell hesitates to go further. Things just don't feel the same any more. Once he would never had not ran to Indru the second he saw him, but he did now. He felt so distant from him now, especially since he had left, and came back. Triell wanted to erase that, and decided he shouldn't think just act. He continues his lazy stride up to Indru's spot as if nothing has been or is out of the ordinary. His head, and tail are lowered and he does not look at his brother directly. Instead he slowly lays down by Indru's side, and rests his head upon his dark legs, closing his eyes.

Swift River Pack Thread - Indru - Sep 09, 2011

Triell. D:
Shuffling footsteps were the first thing to alert Indru to another's presence, the scents of his family hung so thick here and fresh sometimes it was hard to know when someone was nearby or had just passed through. He rose his head from his paws and watched as Triell walked towards him, the leader's tail waving along the ground as he did so stirring up dust and debris. Without word his brother laid down beside him and rested his dark head on the ground much like he had before and Indru whined curiously, his ears perked as he waited for a response.

Things had been different with Triell, the way his brother acted around him, since he had returned and this was one of the most painful things of his forced absence. He and his brother had always been close but had Triell now drifted from him too? Sorrow caused Indru to slump his head on his brothers shoulders, a shuddering sigh escaping him as he nuzzled the thicker fur of his younger brothers scruff. "I'm sorry," he whispered quietly, don't hate me his tone implied.
