sedna - Spieden - May 06, 2016 Read-Only, but if you're dying to join PM me
The water before her shimmered like a sea of stars, the luminescence of the milky way above mirrored perfectly on it's calm, glassy surface. The face of the moon was only a white sliver, suspended high in the heavens and easily lost among the glittering points of light. Spieden shook her head, fiery eyes screwed shut as she dispelled the remnants of doubt and hesitation. Measured steps carried her down the bank and into the loch, the heavy burden she carried at her swollen waist eased by the water. Soon she was floating, legs working to slowly paddle into the deep, the starlit ripples of her wake the only disturbance on the smooth waters. She stopped as she reached the center, paws flicking through the water only to keep her in place. She deeply inhaled, lungs filled with the cool night air tinged by the sweet scent of lakewater. In a smooth motion she submerged her head, eyes staring sightless into the inky depths. Whether the lakebed was just out of reach or leagues below, she couldn't know. The faint starlight was unable to penetrate, leaving nothing but the abyss. Sightless, her other senses came into focus. Her heart pulsed a rhythm in her ears, a wordless mantra that kept her anchored in the void. A few precious seconds slipped by, the air held tight in her chest growing staler. She couldn't leave until she had found what she was looking for. The only question being, what was she looking for? He had told her to come here, in not so many words. She would understand it then. Far from the sea, He had little influence here but in her thoughts through shared blood, but assured her that too stubborn willed it was only in her unconscious mind could she truly see. But it was still not enough, she had been trying to listen but couldn't understand. Without the seawater or whale flesh, the lake water was the nearest conduit. How she'd wished for her uncle's wisdom then. The desperate need to inhale ached in her throat, but she held on for a few moments longer. Look. A soundless word, devoid of any source floated through her mind. It was then she could hold on not a moment longer, her head tearing from the water and throat rasping for fresh air. She glanced about as she caught her breath, disappointment creeping in. She still did not understand. Slowly she leaned back, paws draped limply below her as she simply floated. Amber eyes settled on the constellations above. It had been eons since she'd truly looked at them, and she could remember few of the names her mother had taught her for them. Look. Her eyes settled on the celestial array directly before her, a scattered handful of stars perched just above the treetops, distinct from the rest. The shark and seal. Predator and prey. It had always seemed a bittersweet one to her. The seal trapped in the heavens, forever fleeing from the toothy jaws behind it. And the shark in an eternal chase of its quarry, yet never fulfilled. She sighed. Was that what she was meant to see? She still didn't quite get it. Was she meant to be the poor seal, chased by her own decisions? Or was she the shark, hunting for answers she would never find. Somehow, neither quite fit, and she returned to dry land with more questions than answers. |
