Fleas - Neko - Jun 10, 2017 67 degrees F. Patchy rain possible. @Lorcan
Neko half whimpered and half growled as she scratched her neck, giving her temporary relief from the itching. She had bathed in the lake only a few days earlier and had washed a heavy layer of dirt and grime from her fur and straightened up the mats in her coat, but now the fleas were bothering her again. The summer before, her mother had treated her for fleas, but Neko was just a small pup back then, and she found it difficult to remember what her mother had done. She decided to try anyway. She remembered something with leaves and bark from a particular tree, and she thought she recognized the scent from the redcedar trees in the area. She found a fallen branch and dragged it to a shallow rain puddle that she had seen nearby. She took a quick drink from the puddle knowing that she would not want to drink the water after the leaves and bark were in it. She began tearing leaves and bark off the branch, and she did her best to crush it into pieces using her forepaws. She thought it might be easier to chew them, but she believed they might be toxic. She put the strips of bark and chunks of leaves in the puddle. She wasn’t sure how much of the leaves or bark would be right for the size of the puddle, but she did her best. She continued until much of the surface was covered. She sniffed at the puddle, but the water still seemed plain. She thought she might have to let the leaves and bark soak for a little while. Facing the puddle, she laid down and rested her head on her forepaws and tried to resist the urge to scratch her itching skin. |
