A change of the wind - Rhamnus - Nov 04, 2017

for @Wendigo

A heavy sigh left the arctic woman's chest as she did her best to ignore her travelling companion. It was such a simple task, why on earth he had insisted on coming this far she couldn't quite wrap her head around. Did he just mean to torture her with his mere presence? After all she was just meant to be an observer, to make sure he got the job done, but now, "Urgh." It was almost as if she was going to have to give him a little pep talk. "Wendy dear, should I take your reluctance to mean that I can go home and tell father what an utter failure you are?" Her voice was sweet but there was no affection in her voice as her blood orange eyes stared across the tundra and towards the trees.

She had wanted to be home before the snows set in, but that was clearly never going to happen.

[dohtml]Wendigo merely rolled his eyes at Rhamnus' sugary sweet tone, if he had been a child he would have fake gagged. She was as grumpy as he had ever seen her, must be the cold weather. Or really it could be anything, she was probably the most unhappy wolf he had ever met. Oh well, he had learned early on to ignore it and he preferred her company over any of the others anyways. They all averted their eyes, fear rolling off them in waves but Rhamnus had never bought into any of it.

Instead of buying into her goading he kept his own eyes far on the herizon, "You know as well as I do that father specified that the child had to come from the Lore." Back to where it began or something. Everything that came out of the man's mouth was praised as genius, including Wendigo. He was a message to keep in line and it had certainly worked, and now here they were. They just had to find the right child now that they found the place.

Rhamnus had to wonder if there a devious bone in the peppered boy's body, or maybe it was brains he lacked? Neither of them wanted to be in this land of filth and waste yet here they stood. Like she would have dobbed if the child had come from anywhere else. Well, actually...

Her expression may have been pleasant enough, even friendly unless you looked her in the eyes. Towards the trees was clearly where they would find what they were looking for, urgh, but she wasn't looking forward to scaling those hills. "Well, Wendy darling, this is your time to shine." Her eyes even closed to accomidate the wideness of her chipper smile, a dangerous gesture to be sure. There may have even been a hint of sing-song in her voice, both dangerous signs to be sure.

She was sick of wasting time.

RE: A change of the wind - Wendigo - Nov 08, 2017

[dohtml]Wendigo snorted at his sister's wife grind, she looked like one of the idiot twits that followed behind their father in the spring. It was well known that Reaper laid as many bitches as possible during breeding season but only the ones that were acknowledged were the ones their mother delivered. Of course, even then it was only the arctic ones that got to live more than a few minutes. The others were killed even before the next had arrived, those were his fathers rules. Unclean pups were a sign that the gods weren't happy with their work, an omen that they could be better.

Last year Wendigo had been born to a former member of the pack and the man she had ran away with. Every single cub had been dirty and when Reaper had found the small family after tracking down his mother they had all been killed. Everyone but Wendigo. For whatever reason Reaper had taken a liking to the child and had kept him, brought him back to the home pack and let him suckle at his mate's teat along with his legitimate children. Ever since then he had lived the life of being a walking warning, this is what happened when you Aleena against pack law.

The others of the pack heard the message loud and clear, parting when he passed, whispering his name in hushed voices. His sheer size only aided the image, he towered over the rest of the pack and easily outweighed them. Rhamnus would never be added into the breeding stock of the pack, the impurity that marred her pelt stopped her from being allotted the best assassin as a mate and everyone knew that Rhamnus accepted nothing but the best. So she would go childless until she got less stubborn, so probably never.

Whipping her goofy expression with his tail as he brushed past to keep moving Wendigo chuckled humourlessly, "Haven't you seen me this last year? I've been shining as the beacon of death and ruin since the day I was born."[/dohtml]

With her eyes closed as they were she wasn't able to dodge his tail as it flicked in her face but she was quick enough to gently catch it in her teeth, a teasing tug offered with an amused rumble of a growl. Others might have been fearful of little Wendy but she knew her father had brought him to them for a reason and so she treated him with the same disdain as all her siblings, showing her affection in her own way to each when nobody was around to catch her but never being so consistent as to let them get comfortable with the thought that maybe she did actually care.

She would never question their father's judgment. That much had always been clear. Death and ruin, "Yes and don't you wear it wonderfully dear?" Her mother might have given the girl a soft streak but she tended to hide it well except in moments like this one. She hoped he was sharp enough to take it as the compliment it was and not press her for more, for all it would earn him was teeth. They all had their roles to fulfill and it wasn't like she hadn't volunteered without ulterior motives of her own. "Which way do you think we should go from here? Further south?"

Rhamnus thought that she had them all fooled with her tough exterior, but for a wolf who lived his whole life trying to overcome his own insecurities Wendigo was wiser. Her softer moments were enough for him and they lived their merry lives living with the facades that they presented. The first to knock each other down but also the first to defend the other to the death should someone else even look wrong at their favourite punching bag. Not related by blood but they still somehow managed to make the perfect siblings, if this mission went well and Wendigo's pelt whitened up as was the tendency of black phase-grey's they may even have the option to mate. Given their twisted upbringing they might even take it.

A humored grumble rose from his throat as the yearling pulled his tail from his sister's teeth. He didn't comment on her words that bordered on an actual compliment, he never did but the corners of his lips twitched upwards in appreciation. He truly had been everything his father hoped he would be, intimidating enough to make everyone fall in line but obedient enough to always do as his leaders told him to. Any murmurs of mutiny had ceased as soon as Wendigo had begun to move through the pack, Reaper's message was heard loud and clear. Death and ruin. His orange eyes scanned the surroundings again, looking towards the south as his sister had suggested. "Southwest, away from that damn mountain until it's time for the sacrifice." Stealing a kid from the mountain to kill on the mountain was a suicide mission, the parents would find them before the blood had even dried.

They were both well aware of their father's disdain for the wolves that lived here, none more so than those that dwelled in the pack called Secret Woodlands. Of course the girl had scoffed whenever the name was mentioned, convinced they had let small children name it for only children would be so foolish. A pack needed a strong name, one to strike fear into the hearts of any that might think to mess with them, and secret woodlands? Urgh, she couldn't even think the name without hearing the brainless twittering of the twins, high pitched and girly. Can you keep a secret?

She'd keep the location of their rotting corpses a secret just as soon as the opportunity presented itself.

"Think daddy's favourite pack might still be around?" Hell it made as good a goal as any, at least they'd have markers to look for. She began to move forward, in the direction he had suggested, south and west, away from the mountain.

Wendigo let out a hearty laugh at his sister's words as they began to move towards the south-west, unable to speak for several moments. Reaper had told them about a woman in the Secret Woodlands who had been as pure as pure could be who was treated unfairly and yet she had stayed there to continue her mistreatment. She could have gone with him and very possibly could have even been in the position that mother was in now. He spoke of another pack as well, about a woman named @Anastasia who had been even more lovely but who had been followed by a non-believer, a stuttering nitwit named @Lachesis and how they had formed a pack named Pitch Pine Trail. Wendigo would have been happy to be able to abduct a pup from any pack, but the cherry on top would have been taking one from any of the sinners.

The darker thoughts sobered him and the laughter ceased, "I doubt a pack led by morons could have lasted this long." The words were a grumble as his mind continued to outline what they must do, he wanted this to be completed as quickly as possible. Then he shrugged, "But you never know, stupid loves to follow stupid." In their case, crazy loved to follow crazy and now it was beginning to take like wildfire. The wolves of the lore had better hope that the pair left soon, before the others began to follow them.

Rhamnus had thought she would hate the journey and while she had made a show of grumbling and sniping at every opportunity she had, living up to her thorny namesake, she was almost taken by a wave of melancholy with the knowledge that their journey would soon be over. Almost. She did a good job of hiding it of course, allowing her face to fall back into its resting bitch position as though she was suddenly bored with everything again. "Speaking of idiots following..." She surged forward, smacking the dark wolf in the face with her own tail in retaliation for his earlier offence. She was faster than him but would slow enough to allow him to draw along her side... soon enough.
