She hummed softly as she pretended to think over his suggestion. Sounds smart. Hawthorne answered with a firm nod of her head. It would be best to get the fishing out of the way now while they still could. Then something struck her. Have you, uh, ever fished before? The girl had heard of the act before but hadn't given it much of a go herself. It was then she cursed herself for not paying a bit more attention to the adults back in the Notch.

It can't be terribly hard...right? Not like fish run away like rabbits or deer. She snorted softly with laughter bubbling up. Hawthorne hadn't even considered the facts of fish swimming or even being frozen into the lake. Despite her usual planning skills, she was still a child and occasionally failed to see everything through.

He continued deeper into the cool water, his mismatched gaze turning onto his peppered friend as she spoke. The question hung in the air between them, earning a dumbfounded expression from the dark agouti. Huh. He frowned and glanced back at the water. Um, he started, his paws shuffling awkwardly in the water, no, actually. There wasn’t much fish where I was born. There were plenty of creeks close to the Vale, but none of them deep enough to hold fish. Or he had never looked properly, as he had always preferred hunting on dry land.

An amused smirk graced his features as he nodded in response to her words, his chin pointing back in her direction. Probably just gotta be quick, he suggested, his shoulders rolling into a soft shrug. He shuffled further away from her, his bi-coloured pools searching for a flash of silver beneath the smooth surface of the lake. Fish were quick; therefore, he had to be quicker. His brows pinched in quiet determination as he stood still, allowing the ripples to fade away into the middle of the lake… There! There was a glimmer of something shiny below—a fish! Swallowing his excitement he watched it for a moment, allowing it to swim closer... and closer… He lunged with his jaws and tumbled into the water, his teeth searching for something slimy below, but there was nothing there. Just empty water. He resurfaced, blinking water out of his eyes as he glanced around, searching for his friend’s familiar shape. Huh. Maybe this was going to be harder than he had thought…

& they attempted to fish (and failed)
