The pup was quick to come up with a name for Pip. When she heard it, the mute tilted her head curiously, a slow smile spreading. Violet? That was...a flower, right? Pip knew far more about fish than she did about plants - especially those in forests - but she was fairly certain it was a flower. It was such a pretty name! Nothing would ever beat Signy in her eyes, but honestly, she liked it more than her given name. Instead of being the sound she would make as a pup, it had a sweet connotation. Flowers were nice, so it was nice to know Oksana could associate them with her!

Pip - now dubbed Violet - gave a quick nod of approval. Violet was just fine by her!

During the lesson, the mute was equally pleased to find her pupil was a rarity among pups. She had the patience to sit still and use her senses to pay attention! Aegir was also so go-go-go that this technique would never be suitable for him. He was far better at techniques that allowed him to use quick and decisive action as a dragon's blood demanded.

While her thoughts had been filled with her son, the sea wolf very nearly missed her chance! The fish had swam close to swallow a bubble of air from the surface and had already half-turned by the time Pip reached out to grab it. Sharp teeth dug into the tender meat of its muscular sides and she scrambled to drag the thrashing catch from the water. It was bigger than she thought! Quickly, Pip cast her eyes towards the pup. If she didn't want her to lose it, now was the time to grab on to a part of it and help her bring it farther ashore before she lost it!

Oksana had found the name that she thought suited the woman the best. Once she'd announced to her that was what she wanted to call her she waited for the opinion the small wolf had on it. She really did hope that she liked it and thought it was a pretty name just like she thought the woman was pretty. Oksana didn't care if she didn't have a voice, she thought she was something special because even though she couldn't talk she still managed quite well to across what she needed to.

Oksana's tail swept the ground swiftly as the woman agreed with the name that Oksana had given her.

While she was involved in her lesson she tried to be in her best behavior like her mother had taught her. With a teacher like Violet she had to pay close attention or she might miss something important. She couldn't miss anything if she wanted to do well and learn the technique that was being showed to her. Maybe when Inna came to visit she could show her how she had learned to catch fish. She knew her mother would be happy that she was trying to learn and be successful even when she wasn't there.

Oksana had seen the fish come up and take some air and she looked to Violet to see what to do next. The small woman almost missed the fish but grabbed it in her jaws at the last moment. It was a really big fish and the pup could see that her friend needed some help so she lived in and got the best grip she could on the fish's tail hoping it might control it's flopping around. Once she thought she had a good grip that she wouldn't lose she started to pull the fish.

With Oksana's help, she and Pip managed to haul the massive char up and out of the water, carrying it away from the icy banks of the lake. The mute closed her jaws hard around the fish until it's flopping slowed to nothing before setting it down. Pip turned to Oksana and beamed with pride. Despite not having done it before, the youngster had done very well! To show as much, the agouti reached forward to lick the black girl's forehead in congratulations. Happily, her tail swept behind her.

Those were the fundamental skills necessary for fishing. If Oksana practiced, she could be as skilled as any sea wolf! It took patience, a good eye, and a steady jaw. With her own dripping and icicles already forming along her whiskers, Pip gave a might shake to fling some of them away before swiping her tongue across her muzzle to dispel the rest.

Winter was remaining bitterly cold, but the mute didn't feel as much of it as she should. She was still riding the high of a successful catch and far too pleased with having gifted some of her knowledge to the next generation. May she use it well and teach her packmates, too! Maybe she would pass on the tricks to Lavender, the sweet Alpha's daughter who had first found her and begged Lachesis in her stead for warmth and food.

Now, all that was left was to help the pup carry the fish to the borders of her pack. Stooping to pick up the largest to spare the pup the burden, Pip inclined her head towards the other for Oksana to carry and began leading her back towards her home.

Oksana had jumped right in to help Violet with the fish so they didn't lose it back into the water. She then helped her to carry it further away so it wouldn't flop back in. The pup watched as the woman then made the fish stop moving she suspected by ending its life. Taking the life of another creature wasn't something the pup had ever done but she knew that she would have to get used to it and eventually do herself. She was prepared for that. Once the fish had been taken care of she looked up to Violet who had reached out and licked her crown. It reminded her of how her mother used to do but it made her tail wagging all the same. She was happy to have done a good job and to have been able to help. We did really good today, she commented as she looked down at both of their catches. Thank you for showing me Violet.

She would now go back to the surge with a little more knowledge than when she had left and maybe it would prove to be very helpful to her in the future. She was very grateful to the woman for teaching her the new technique so that she could use it. I will make sure to practice as much as I can, she assured. She wanted to become just as good as Violet was at it. The pup giggled when her friend shook the ice from her coat before shaking her own head even though it hadn't gotten wet.

Oksana didn't know what the future held for her since everything seemed so confusing and there had been so many changes for her. He wanted to get through them badly and not become like her mother but there were times she wanted to curl up against Reid and cry into his fur because she felt like she had lost so much already. She wasn't even a year old and she had already lost her parents and grandmother and some of her friends. Was this how her mother always felt? Violet reminded her a little of her mother which reminded her in that moment of the emotions that she tried to bury.

She had to shove it all down because the work wasn't done. She realized that her friend wanted to take the fish somewhere. When. She received the direction to get the smaller of the two fish she picked it up by it's head and carried it as she followed Violet back toward her borders.

Pip listened with delight as Oksana showered praise for a job well done. She nodded readily at the thanks, pleased to have been able to offer something of value. That the pup was still interested in using the skill and practicing brought a great deal of happiness to the mute. She always imagined the inland wolves felt fishing was a wasted effort when hunting was so much easier. But to hear the younger generation value it as much as she did brought all kinds of warm fuzzy feelings.

Pip followed the track she had already begun wearing down through the forest that led from Turtleback Lake to the borders of whatever the pack called themselves now. Upon reaching the borders, the mute came to a stop. Here was where they would part ways. If the little one called for help, she could have a packmate help her bring the other fish to her pack rather than making two trips. Either way, the hour was late and Pip had her own shelter to get to before the bite of the cold got any worse. The mute had made something of a home for herself in a hollowed out tree near the lake. It wasn't much, but she was small and didn't need a large den.

Setting the large fish down at Oksana's paws, Pip waved her tail in goodbye and gave a quick lick to the end of the pup's nose in goodbye. No doubt, they'd run into each other again!

With two fishes to she felt that they had fine getting well especially when Oksana hadn't ever caught a fish herself. She now had a very promising technique to try that she wanted to try as soon as she could. She smiled when Violet nodded happy that she had been able to help the woman not only with the fish but also she kind of felt like she'd been able to brighten her day. While she had gotten better at reading what her new friend was saying she did wonder what Violet was thinking about.

She followed the small woman up the trail that she recognized to lead to the Surges borders. She wondered why they were bringing the fish to her packs borders but she couldn't ask with a fish in her mouth. She wondered if they might be a gift to the surge wolves. She hadn't had any idea they Violet knew the wolves that lived beyond the borders. That was an interesting thing to learn and made her feel like her new friend wasn't just passing through.

It was even more clear that the fish were gifts for the surge wolves. I will be sure to tell Lachesis about them, thank you Violet, these will be a really high help for us. She knew they didn't have a whole lot in the caches because they had just moved. I hope to see you again soon, she added, Bye Violet. She bumped the woman's nose after receiving the lick on her nose.
