shock and awe - Alarick - Aug 14, 2021

The remains of various animals decorated the landscape at various intervals, and ordinarily, that would’ve been the first clue to turn around. The second was a notable lack of other creatures in the area. Except for the distant rumbles of thunder signifying an approaching storm, his surroundings were eerily quiet. Even his own steps were nearly silent, the former hunter moving with practiced stealth and precision, senses on high alert. It did not take long before he caught a glimpse of a grisly sight, a veritable hill of discarded, bleached skeletons. Attentive eyes studied the remains, some of which he realized, belonged to his kind.

It felt deeply wrong, for them to be here like this. He hoped they hadn’t been killed for the express purpose of becoming part of this macabre display.

Instinct urged him to turn around and to get as far away as possible, but Alarick stood motionless, unable to pull his eyes away from the sight. The whole thing was unnerving, horrifying - even more so as the stormy weather grew closer, tendrils of light flashing across the sky and winds beginning to pick up. But.. there were no scents, aside from that of approaching rain. Whoever, or whatever had collected all of these and brought them here didn’t seem to be around, anymore. Part of him wanted to make sure of that, though.

To be absolutely sure there wasn't some unseen threat lurking here, that would hurt anyone else.
