moisture on your lips - Orson - May 03, 2022

The forest was dark. The waning crescent moon, a slither of light behind the overcast night sky, did little to illuminate the trails which weaved through the cedarwood trees below.

Orson stepped cautiously as he moved forwards along the well-trodden path which guided him to an unknown location East. He refused to slow his pace, even as the dirt felt hard and unforgiving beneath his tired, aching paws.

Thirst clawed at the inside of his throat; it was the prickly-burning sensation which motivated him to keep moving in search of water. In his jaws the male carried a gnarled femur bone, a relic from the last kill he had managed to scavenge from. Small scraps of meat still clung to each end of the bone and inside the rich marrow remained. If he should grow desperate enough, he would break open the bone and lick at the metallic-tasting marrow for moisture.

He hoped it would not come to that though, as he had observed rain clouds gathering in the sky earlier in the evening. The night air was thick and humid, a sign that the rain was now imminent. The wolf gave a shake of his dark dishevelled fur; an attempt at releasing some built-up apprehension as his deep orange eyes gazed up to the sky expectantly.
