it's quiet uptown - Chan - Apr 30, 2023

There are moments that the words don't reach,
there is suffering too terrible to name.
You hold your child as tight as you can,
and push away the unimaginable.

Chan still kept his promise of never straying too far from @Flair's side, but when she was home and tucked away safely he took time for himself. He would scale the falls and rest upon the ledge at their tallest point, looking out over this quaint little home of theirs, and think. Most of his reflections revolved around Auburn, about all that he would never know about his son, of what the young wolf would never know or experience, of all the ways he could have possible prevented his death. Sometimes they would branch, toward the children that had fallen before their big brother, of Marigold and the lost look in her eyes, of those yet to even meet the world.

Wherever his thoughts went, he felt safe with them here. His world had been rocked again, but this time he had a solid foundation to cling to, and a vague awareness of what weathering such a storm would look like. The grief flooding him would not drown him, and damned if he would let it sweep away his daughter either. In these moments he would feel that overwhelming sadness rather than running from it, would dwell in emotions and what-ifs and the unfairness of it all, and then he would gather his self-control and return to the pack. Quiet, unsmiling, but diligent, active, there for them just as they were him.

He had another hour or so he guessed, looking up at the stars as he lay upon his stomach, forepaws dropped over the edge. Then he would check on Marigold again before falling asleep next to his partner. Life continued, no matter how he felt about it.
