I'll say it out loud - Neva - Jul 04, 2024

RE: Neva, take shelter! A sudden thunderstorm is about to roll your way.
For @Matos and of course @Aven is free to join at any time.
Early evening, sudden thunderstorms, 66F/19C

Note for me: leaving the date vague since ex-SC members are travelling but Neva would be somewhere between 6-7 weeks old.

The nomadic cub was not supposed to have left the pre-approved meeting clearing that all the adults had set up. She knew she was supposed to be down below, near where the water was landing, not up here on top where it was all coming from. But, she couldn’t fight off the curiosity. Back at home their big lake had seemed to still, sure wavey if the wind picked up, but it had not run like this one did. She needed to see where all the water came from that came roaring down below.

So, when the sun had begun to set and the dim had come in over them, Neva had hatched a plan with her sister to sneak away. She was sure Aven was somewhere nearby now, even if she could not see her - she could feel her. When she had left, the sky had been cloudy and the air had felt close and hot, so the wind that picked up was quite enjoyable. Any adult would have seen the warning signs, the rapidly dropping temperatures, the way the sky seemed to roll with clouds, the faraway rumble of storms approaching. Neva knew none of these things, she saw no harm in quenching her thirst for knowledge.

The big walk had been tiring, but they had not actually walked as far as Mother made it seem. It had only been a couple of days, and now they had been staying here for a few more days, so what was all the fuss over? Neva needed to explore what she assumed was her brand new forever home. The girl had just crested the rather steep climb to see the rocky oasis, when the first fat raindrop fell onto the crown of her head.

Their descent from the mountain was slow and painstaking. It was a much different experience with three itty bitties, though the girls seemed to enjoy it. A bit of sadness full the young man as they made their way to flatter lands, knowing he may never return. The all day and constant supervision of the pups kept him focused on the now instead of the past or even future. Who knew where they'd end up calling their new home.

The day was winding down and the air felt off to the eldest Eastfall-Slayer, causing his fur to stand on end. Dual gazed eyes looked to the sky watching the fading light dance over the swirling low clouds. Something deep within him pushed him to check on his family. Deciding to check on the smallest members of their wandering band first. Jessamy was tucked safely with their mother so Matty turned to find the twins. Not seeing them easily within the clearing they've found. A wave of panic surged in him as neither of his nieces were within sight. He quickly found their scent and followed it into the tree line.

He followed it until they were above the falls began. A single small agouti form came into view. "Neva!" the uncle called out, though it very well could have been Aven. The girls were identical and have yet to have any differentiating marks or qualities. So it was a 50/50 chance that he called out to the correct twin. He needed to find both of them so in the moment it didn't really matter if he was right or not.

Thunder boomed in the distance and Matos needed to find them both and bring them back to the group.

The agouti child looked up at the sky accusatory after the first drop splattered onto her head only for a second to crash onto her nose. She didn’t particularly want to be caught out in the rain, but had to admit that the coolness was refreshing against the humidity. So she continued on, moving closer to the quick moving water, watching as it rushed over the stones before beginning to plunge down below. She had an idea to drop a stick into it and watch it go over the falls, but before she could even turn to collect her game piece she heard her name behind her.

Smirking to herself she pretended like she did not hear her uncle calling her name and slipped into a familiar game she had been cooking up with her twin. It was innocent enough, and she turned to the side to begin hunting for an appropriately sized stick. Small enough it would still float, but large enough it would be easy to see as it made its way towards the cascade. Should she hear the name Neva again she would turn with a sugary sweet smile and reply, ”I’m not Neva.” Honestly, couldn’t any of them tell her and her sister apart?

The only one who got it right every time was Mother. It was with that thought that the slow trickle of rain turned into an outright downpour and the sky flashed with lightning.

The small figure went about her scavenging unaware of him calling out. Had he called out the wrong name or had she just not hear him. He tried again, "Neva," only to have her turn and say she wasn't Neva. Dual colored eyes looked the child over trying to commit anything significant to memory. "Sorry love, do you know where she is? There's a storm coming in 'n we should get back." Amber and emerald looked around once more for his other niece. Dark audits pressed forwards as thunder rolled through sky. His hackles raising as static electricity charged the air. How he wished they had a den dug, or were back home with the large communal den.[/b]

Neva was pleased that her little trick had gone over well and that she had fooled her uncle into thinking that she was Aven. Her grin might have come across as welcoming as sweet - but it was truly just the thrill of pulling the wool over someone’s eyes. Turning to look over her shoulder back towards the river behind her, she was sad to have to abandon her game of throwing sticks into the falls before it even began, but even as a child the weather made the skin along her spine crawl.

Stepping closer to her uncle to be safe she shook her head and told the truth, ”I dunno.” She had been with her when they snuck away, but they had parted ways a few minutes ago and she wasn’t sure where her twin had gone. She might have spoken up to explain that had the sky not suddenly lit up with lightning that struck close enough to them that the ground shook when the thunder boomed.

Pressing against Matos’ legs she looked up towards him in fright, waiting for some kind of instruction from the grown up on what they were supposed to do.

The child's smile did come across as sweet, but that did little to ease the uncle. The dark Eastfall's ears flicked in every direction at Aven's declaration that she didnt know where her twin was. He strained to pick up on any sign of her as the air became more and more charged. His panic rose - "This is not good" Matty thought to himself.

Flash...boom Matos jumped at the sound, hackles on full display, tail curled above his back. One last sweep for Neva in the immediate vicinity. Seeing none the inky uncle placed what he hoped to be a comforting nudge to his niece's cheek as she pressed herself against his legs.

"Lets get back. It's not safe to be near water during a storm." Mat nudged the twin he believed to be Aven back toward where everyone slept. He hoped that his other niece had made her way back. If she wasnt there he'd have to go find her.

RE: I'll say it out loud - Aven - Jan 11, 2025

It was something that happened peculiarly often with the twins, even if the individual instances could each be written off as reasonable coincidence. Without speaking of it, the same idea had crossed Aven's mind as she drifted, pulled away briefly by the sight of something sparkling amongst the leaves. They needed things to throw down the falls once they were up there!

When she'd sought to return to her twin, her jaws were laden with sticks and her tongue heavy with various forest trinkets. For a few minutes she had tried rolling a large rock with her too, but that had proven to be too much altogether. As the falls began to peak back into view, though, she noticed that her sister wasn't alone.

The thrill of mischief shot up her spine and she abandoned everything she carried abruptly, momentarily looking as though she vomited out a small terrarium. Then, she hid, and spied, and when Matos began to search for her she scurried away and let the rain wash her trail away. It wouldn't be until he seemed to tire of the game he wasn't aware he was playing that Aven finally relented.

She had one last bright idea though. As carefully and quietly as she possibly could (the raucous storm would be her only helper, her age certainly a handicap), the young girl would sneak up on her uncle's back before pouncing.

"GOTCHA!"
