We can be heroes - Sagacity - Jan 22, 2014 [dohtml] The days were getting slightly longer, though, beginning a bit earlier in the morning and stretching on further into the late afternoon. She anticipated long days in which the sun broke over the horizon earlier than her bones begged her to rise, and stayed bright and warm later on until the stars had already begun to come out along the Eastern horizon, begging the sun to set completely. She longed for the days of heat and the buzzing sound of grasshoppers, and the glow of fireflies at night while the crickets sang. For the first night in the spring when the peepers chirped and the robins flew to and fro, forever in search of food for their young ones. She would even go so far as to happily tolerate the pesky dandelion seeds that got stuck in her fur, and the mud from spring as it clung to her coat so long as it meant a promise of food and warmth. This winter had gone on long enough, and she was ready for it to subside.[/dohtml] RE: We can be heroes - Newol - Jan 22, 2014
It was like something out of a dream. Something that existed far back within the pages of history forever and a month ago. Newol didn't forget scents. Especially ones he considered to have once been his friends. The sun wasn't as high up in the sky as it had been, and so a smart wolf would have probably turned around and headed for home by now. But Newol wasn't normal, and thus didn't follow this pattern. He followed now the scent from a time in his life that now whisped around him like swirling images in his mind. He followed the scent that he'd come across. The run through the desert seemed like something that had happened in a past life, now that he'd finally reached the forests. But it was something he couldn't forget. Especially sense he'd made the final leg of it on his own. He recalled two wolves that he'd made that run with, one male, and one female. Both of which he'd had fond memories of. He thought he'd never see ether of them again. He'd come to peace with it.
That was the thing. Newol existed for his friends. His favorite thing about this world was the variety, the different colors of the different souls of the different wolves. And ones that he allowed himself to grow attached to, he was willing to die for. It was very simple and clear cut actually. If you stood beside him, he stood beside you with all that he had. It was how he worked. There weren't many reasons why, that was just how God intended for him to function. And that's why he now chased this scent. It couldn't be who he thought it was. It just couldn't. When he found his way to the grotto, he must have stood there for minutes not knowing if he dared to go inside. But he had to know. Working his way between the ice flow and the stone, me worked his way into the grotto. The space inside was massive enough that at one point, the whole Inyade could have fit inside it comfortable like. But what drew he spotted inside is what glued him to his perch. There it was, there she was. A wolf he had come to peace with knowing he'd never see again. He managed to push her name from his lips, but that was all. "Sagacity..." She didn't turn at once, but instead seemed to freeze just as he had, and that's what knocked him out of his stupor. Her reaction had been real, which meant that his was real. Which meant that he wasn't being haunted but some strange ghost of a dream. Last he'd seen her, Sagacity had left with his other companion. He'd not been mad about it. Honestly, she'd been safer for it. The route that he had wanted to take was better with just him. If anything had happened, it was only him that felt it. But that particular worst had not come to pass. And it was true that he had no inclination back then of her feelings. He hadn't been as good at reading people as he was now, but he was older, and much smarter. He'd managed to catch just a hint of something in her. The way her fur had bristled just a tad, she'd recalled something unpleasant at he sound of his voice. It puzzled him.
But as soon as she turned to face him, he noticed her injury. And with that, all the old instincts kicked in, showing just how much a part of him they were. A sense of alertness came to him, he was not fully in this moment. As she nipped at his cheek, he nuzzled hers. A sign of affection for his old friend. Setting down infront of her, he gave her a good eyeing over. Her flank was injured and that pissed him off just a tad, as it always did when he found a friend getting hurt. But he suppressed it quickly. Telling himself he'd never expected to see her again. There's nothing he could have done to help. Finally with a somewhat heavy voice, he responded to her. "Across the place, Sagacity. I went straight across the sand like I said I would. I only remember about half the run though... It kinda, kinda blurred." Again his eyes fell to her side. The old instincts to make sure his friends where taken care of came back startlingly fast. Finally, he questioned her. "You okay? Can I help you with anything?" It was his nature, a question less nature. A friend was a friend. And he saw to his friends. Still something about that day, the day that the three of them went separate ways bugged at him now. She'd left with the other male that had been in their group. Not that he'd have taken offense to that if she'd had genuinely wanted this.. But now that he thought about it, something just seemed off. He didn't push the matter though. He had a friend back, and she seemed in need. He didn't need bother the past at the moment. RE: We can be heroes - Sagacity - Jan 22, 2014 [dohtml] It was strange how a meeting like this could transport you back in time. As soon as he touched her cheek, Sagacity remembered how much she had enjoyed the time they'd spent together- ruffians, loners, a team. She, Newol and Jackdaw. She'd been the eldest of the three- she was a year older than the boys- and remembered with a soft smile how she used to think of herself as being superior because of her age. Because she was an adult- when she was actually anything but that. They'd run, laughed, rough-housed, learned and experienced freedom together, and she recalled the exhilaration with ease when she looked at him. With a few added nicks and scratches here and there, he was still very much himself- albeit a bit taller and more mature looking than the yearling he'd been when she'd seen him last. That spark was still in his eyes, the overt friendliness that transported her back in time to a place when she'd been wilder, unbound.[/dohtml] RE: We can be heroes - Newol - Jan 23, 2014
People could say what they wanted about the way Newol existed. Honestly though, it made life a very simple task for him. But then again, he'd known who he was for some time now. And he knew that it was infact who he was, because even with all the time he'd had to mature with that image in his mind of himself, the image hadn't changed any. He lived for others. That was his purpose. The old memories where strange. The lines across his snout had been a fresh wound then. Once he'd left the sand for the trees, in fact, the truths about him had only gotten more solid. By now all that was left to be said was that it was what it was. The stories of the great kings in his bloodline all held some amount of pain because of the past. He didn't want to feel that pain, and more importantly, didn't want to see someone feel that pain.
Sagacity quickly pulled him back by appearing strong despite her condition. A chuckle escaped his sealed maw at it though. She'd have to remember that Newol could look past titles like age and rank and see the very color of a wolf as just that, a wolf. But the statement itself brought a full laugh from his lips. "HA! Boring? Running head long into a wall of wind and sand toward a little green blip on the horizon, you call it boring, I call it exhausting." That had been him. He'd told himself that he'd cross the sand and defeat it, and that's what he'd done. It had been a foolish thing to do, but fools had their place in the world. Finally surrendering to the fact that there was nothing he could do at that moment to asset her, he allowed himself to relax and get comfortable. A smile spreading his face as she requested a reprieve from the winter cold. He wasn't quiet sure that was in his capabilities, but he humored himself with the faint thought that he'd look into it. So with a grin on his face, he said "I'll see what I can do." Then finally the question reached the forefront of his mind about that day they went their separate ways in the desert before he set off across the sands. With a content smile on his face, he looked at her and asked, "So... How far did you and Jacks go?" Call it a guilty question, but he liked knowing the status quo of things, his tone making it apparent enough that it was a question of more then one thing at once. Re: - Spirit of Wildwood - Jan 23, 2014 A young pronghorn has fallen behind its herd and starved in the snow. +5 Health RE: We can be heroes - Sagacity - Jan 28, 2014 [dohtml] The moment Newol laughed caught Sagacity by surprise- but she very quickly realized that it pleased her to see someone laugh so openly and freely. It seemed that most of the wolves of Hollowheart Keep were unsmiling and serious, and she felt a pang of regret for the wolf she'd once been, to see Newol so easily enjoying something she'd said. It caused her to smile and once more lose the sharp, anti-social edge she generally carried about herself. With him she felt young, in those moments where she was able to forget who she'd become. He made her grow into what might've been a very different wolf, had she stayed with him and gone through the desert- but she'd been unwilling to risk her life, as much as she wanted to go with him. She nodded empathetically when he admitted that the desert had been exhausting, and chuffed amusedly. "Told you so."[/dohtml] RE: We can be heroes - Newol - Jan 30, 2014
It was almost a bitter conclusion that Newol came to when he realized that no matter how he felt about that run across the sand, how important it had been to him, that ultimately, Sagacity would end up being right. She had warned him. She had told him that there was going to be nothing but sand and wind out there and that no matter what he was going to have a truly ugsome time. And she'd been right. It had meant something though. He'd said that he was going to defeat the desert he'd grown up in once and for all. And he'd set out and done it. Maybe that didn't mean much to Sagacity or even anyone else for that matter. But it meant something to him. So, hanging his head a little bit in defeat to her, he finally admitted. "Yes. You did. And you where right to." He brought his eyes up to meet hers. A very plan and matter of fact tone in his voice. "It was terrible. And I was a fool to try it." Then again, his gaze broke off again.
He knew that that storm couldn't mean anything to anyone but him, after all, he'd been the only one to run through it. And so, he'd been a fool. A triumphant fool, but a fool none the less. And here he paid for it. By having to face down some one he'd come to peace with the fact that he'd never see again and tell them why he'd disappeared from their life. But her answer was very satisfying to him. Jackdaw had been a good friend, and they'd all eaten better because of him. But he and Sagacity wouldn't have been a good match for one another. They'd have driven each other to go completely rouge and hate even their own species. And fortunately that had been avoided. But it was her final words that really stung him. Catch up to them? Newol had never even gone looking. He'd cut his ties, made his peace, and moved on completely. He'd never expected to see ether of them ever again in his life. And so now here she sat infront of him as some sort of twisted insult to injury, or some bloody kind of pentance for past sins. Finally, he brought his gaze back up to hers. A small pang of apology in his eyes, he spoke it what would be the most mature voice she'd ever heard from him. "I didn't try, Sagacity. I thought we'd run our course." He knew that it would sound like a truly horrible excuse and that she'd probably hate it and be furious with him for it. But still, that didn't stop him for added at the end. "I'm sorry." |
