Fox- A Small Red Coyote - Kova - Jun 25, 2015

The thick trunks of the trees creaked as a strong breeze scraped through the leaf filled canopy. The mountain was gorgeous today. The sky was clear and the animals were out in full force foraging, checking on their territories, or chasing off intruders. The same could be said for the wolves who lived on the mountain. Everyone was out and about doing something while the temperatures stayed nicely between not too warm and not too chilly. It was noon right now, and with half the day still left there was a good chance that something eventful would happen to one of the mountains residents.

Kova had started the day early and tried to fish near the stream at the base of the mountain. Then he went back to the den to keep an eye on his siblings for a little while until somebody had switched out with him. Without a real mentor to teach him yet, Kova had nothing else to do but to attempt to make himself useful. The best thing he could think of was to head out and patrol the borders. However his mind was murky and clouded as it had been for nearly a week before.

Memories of chasing a coyote with a red she wolf ran a muck through Kova's mind as he picked up the scent of fox. Firefly had gone missing... AGAIN. That fact had Kova both worried about her and rather angry at himself. He couldn't even figure out what he was angry about, but every time he happened to do something that they had once done together Kova couldn't help but see an image of the fiery she wolf in his head. He longed to have somebody to just hang out with. Someone who wasn't always busy with work that he wasn't allowed to help with. Bane had left, which meant that Kova couldn't bother the young guardian anymore. Lugh was always cooped up in a smelly plant den, Minka was usually busy with his youngest siblings, Gent was someplace probably doing border patrols, and Raela was out scouting the lands for deer herds so that the pack could do some big hunt. That left Cessair, someone that Kova didn't hang out with normally, and his siblings. However Kova couldn't exactly relate to his brothers and sister right now since all they wanted to do was nibble on his ears, tail, and face. He liked to play with them he really did, but sometimes the yearling just needed space from them.

No he definitely wanted to be chasing foxes with somebody that he felt a little more comfortable with.  However, that did not look like it was going to happen today as the gray youth wandered down a small game trail. The scent of fox was getting thicker now, and this caused Kova's ears to flick forward while a little growl pushed past his lips. Today maybe he was going to get a fox pelt to give to his little brothers and sister to play with.“Speech”

The Lord’s gonna come for your first born son

The foxes were back. They didn't stay away long, those blasted carrion scavengers. His muzzle wrinkled as he wandered the border aimlessly. Like Kova, Gus was also without a mentor. Thus, he was without direction. But he had to be doing something. He was afraid what someone might say to him if they caught him aimlessly milling about the main area, so he made a constant circuit of the territory. He knew it's fringes like he knew his mothers scent. To be honest, he knew the borders far better than the interior. For some reason it didn't felt like he belong there. He was the lowest ranked male and the most recent addition to the wolves of Round Stone Crest. He was an outsider — and thus he remained where he felt he belonged: the outside.

He hoped one day someone would welcome him inside.

Late in the afternoon, he caught wind of a pack mate who seemed to also be in the same boat as the golden boy. Nervously, Gus picked up his paws a little higher and walked a little faster, hoping to meet up with this other wolf. The scent was familiar but Gus wasn't sure he could come up with the name. He had surely seen whoever it was before.

Oh.

It was. Dang. Gus' tongue faltered for the name as he came up behind a lanky grey shape. This one was Minka's eldest, right? He was the only one in the pack who was his own age, so Gus should have known his name. But he couldn't think of it. "Hey," he barked lamely, hesitantly deciding to forego the names. "You don't have to patrol alone."

Kova slowed to a stop after he heard the word "Hey," called out by somebody behind him. Kova slowly turned to look over the young male. He had a pleasing number of warm shades and colors mixed throughout an agouti coat. The reds and seemingly gold strands of fur caught Kova's interest immediately. This wolf was just so different from the ones he was used to seeing, and he was big too. Taller than Kova, with wide developing shoulders and long legs tapering down to over sized paws, this young male was already of a great size. Kova was impressed by the sight of this fellow. For once he was envious of another wolf's coat, despite normally taking pride in his Lagina silver fur. Kova paused to dip his head slightly in a polite but respectful greeting between peers. This wolf was new he could tell, but Kova wasn't sure where he stood when compared to him. He'd noticed how the rest of the pack was very much like a ladder, with subordinates ranking under higher wolves, and he as a yearling was always supposed to be submissive to the adults. This male though, was his age, and Kova did not really know how to react in this situation. So he tried to be friendly and welcoming whilst keeping himself raised a bit to match Datura's height.

“Thanks.” Kova mumbled not knowing what else to say at first. He was glad he wasn't patrolling alone, though right now he almost felt like that would be more nice. The awkwardness he felt around the brownish gold youth mounted as Kova decided to turn and take the lead.

“Umm... My name is Kova.. He threw the name over his shoulder while trying to focus on the earth beneath his paws. What was your name again? I seem to have forgotten.” Kova half choked out the question trying not to offend the other wolf but totally unsure of whether he had Datura's name right or not. He might have heard it spoken around his mother, but Kova wanted to be sure. He cleared his throat as the scent of fox invaded his nostrils. The smell was close to a coyotes, but not nearly as close as a coyotes smell was to their own. Kova shook his head before slowing his steps and looking around at the landscape for the hidden creatures.
