Several months had been passed since Neko lost her birth pack, and for most of that time, she had been alone. Just surviving from day to day had been a struggle. She was always lonely. She was always hungry. She often faced danger entirely on her own. Granted, there had been those who she considered friends, but she had always parted ways with them. In those days, the thought of simply playing had rarely even crossed her mind, and even when it did, she usually didn’t feel like it.
Things were different now that she was once again a part of a pack. She was no longer alone, her belly was full, and she was relatively safe within the pack’s territory. She was fully aware that she had responsibilities to the pack. She would have to talk to Drestig and Jessie about an infirmary and herb storage, then there would be the actual excavation of the infirmary and the gathering of herbs. There might also be a possibility of her helping out with scouting while she was out finding and collecting herbs. But all that didn’t mean she couldn’t take some time to play.
She had caught a mouse near the bank of the creek. Not long ago, she was hungry enough that she would have simply swallowed it whole, but today she felt like toying with it. She grabbed it by the tail and tossed it into the air, then caught it in her mouth, handling it gently enough that she didn’t even injure it. After a few tosses, she missed catching the mouse and it landed on the ground in front of her. It squeaked furiously and ran into the rye field and disappeared among the stalks. "I’ll get you," she said cheerfully with a wag of her tail as she lunged into the rye after it.
