Lavender Stark

Her brows met in the middle, a frown etched across her pale features as the blue-eyed female continued, announcing that it could be possible that her and Lavender’s Ma were acquainted with each other. Huh. It wasn’t entirely impossible, was it? “Issa funny way o’ talkin’,” she chirped back in response, a sheepish grin tugging at her lips and replacing the frown she had previously worn. Sure, her Ma talked like the russet wolf before her, but it didn’t mean it was any less funny. She adored her mother and everything about her—especially her odd way of speaking.

At the introduction the girl began shaking her head frantically, the frown returning with a vengeance. No way, that couldn’t be her name. Not possible! “No,” she started with a pout, her nose wrinkled, “tha’s not y’name.” She shook her head once more, to emphasis her words. “Tha’s Ma’s name. Well, her secon’ name, but still ‘er name.” Youthful naivety took its hold on the little cloud, for she hadn’t put two and two together. She was just positively dumbfounded that this wolf—this Andy—was calling herself by her mother’s surname! How preposterous!

"Yer not 'ery wrong there." Because even if it was a way of talking she had always known, a way that those closest to her had talked, it had indeed been seen as funny to everyone else. Andy had been the butt of a joke a few times with her accent and it had bothered her a lot when she was younger but she had learned over time how to handle those feelings. Now not much could get under Andy's skin because she had seen a bit of everything. Good and bad.

Blue eyes widened when the girl proclaimed no. Her jaw parted just slightly at the girl's words. Her Ma's second name? Impossible. Well, not really mentioning she was speaking to a child who happened to share her strange speaking habits. "Wha's yer Ma's name?" Andy asked softly with furrowed brows. "I got some sisters." As if that might convince the child to share more information on this unnamed Ma. What were the odds really? One in a million? Perhaps higher? What a strange situation the large female was finding herself in...

She softly settled down onto her rear, ear pushed forward with every intent on catching the girl's words. What she said was rather important to Andromeda. Even if the whole thing was starting to feel like a setup or some sort of dream. But she had nothing to lose.

She still had not put the connection together, why her Ma and the wolf sitting before her shared the same surname. It didn’t make sense. It was mother’s second name. It belonged to her. So why did the russet wolf claim that the name belonged to her, also? Her frown only deepened as her head remained tilted to the side, confusion gnawing furiously at the back of her mind. Had she stolen the name? Maybe this wolf was a thief?! Was she one of the wolves her father had told her about—the ones that tried to steal from their food cache?! Ooooh no, she thought, hurriedly, to herself as she swallowed, hard. Was this wolf gonna try and steal her?!

Oh no, ooooh no, no, no no! She had let her guard down!!! How could she have been so foolish?! So dumb!!!?

Wha’s yer Ma’s name? Her inner turmoil was quickly forgotten as she blinked, dumbfounded by the girl’s question. “Uh,” she started, her ears twitching, “it’s Ma.” She snickered at her own joke, her tail thumping against the ground as a single brow arched, a lop-sided grin now tugging at her lips. Sisters. Nah, couldn’t be. There was no way this wolf and her Ma were sisters. Even if they looked alike. Noooo way! “Ma’s name Lilya,” she started with a sharp nod, unsure of whether sharing the information was a good thing or not, “an’ she’s the leader of m’pack. Her ’n Da.” Her tone was rather matter-of-factly because little Lavender Stark was very proud to be the daughter of a pair of alphas. Even if her mother had only recently acquired the position due to the death of her Aunt…

There was only so many things that could be marked down as coincidence. The name that rolled forth was too much to be considered a coincidence. Lilya. The rest of the girl's words were heard but they were not taken in as deeply as the name had been. Despite having just sat down she quickly found her paws and stumbled back briefly. Her jaws parted ever so slightly. Was she staring down her niece? Was it just a bad dream (or good dream? She couldn't exactly pinpoint which it would be)? Her stomach seemed to roll about and her heart felt like it was being tugged at.

"Oh." Was all she could manage for now.

What did she say? This was all unplanned and she was finding it rather hard to handle. She had not awake this day and thought "Oh, I'm going to bump into family today". In fact, she thought the very opposite thing. Andromeda had given up the idea of running into family and had especially not expected to find some tucked away in a forest so very far from home. Her own sister. Her own sister's children. It was exciting and nerve-wracking all at once.

She fumbled a few steps backward and shook her head softly. "Is been an 'ovely chat but Ah really needa ge' goin'." A sheepish smile was all she could offer before she started moving away from the ivory girl and back into the dense forest.

Lavender Stark

Oh.

Had she said something wrong? Lavender did not understand why the blue-eyed wolf’s demeanour suddenly changed. She blinked, completely dumbfounded and perplexed by the older female’s response, a frown reappearing on her dark lips. The corners of her lips fell and her ears flattened against her skull, a nervous expression collapsing onto her pale features. Leave it to Lavender to say something wrong because doing anything near the realm of right was not her forté. She shuffled backward, unsure of whether the change was a good thing or not. Perhaps it was time for her to take her leave—she had already shared too much with the stranger that shared her mother’s name.

However, the blue-eyed wolf beat Lavender to the punch.

“Uh, wa—“ she started, protesting Andy’s sudden departure before the words caught in her throat. Her lips fell together instead, her tail flicking awkwardly behind her as she watched the russet wolf disappear into the trees. “Whatta weirdo,” she mumbled aloud to herself as she gathered herself and retreated into the trees, her paws carrying her quickly over the forest floor. She had to tell her Ma what had happened. Perhaps she could explain why this wolf had the same last name as her, because it did not make sense to Lavender... not yet, anyway.
