After you? and so she led the way. Instead of lessening, the rain only seemed to pelt down all the harder, some small trickles finally making their way through her thick coat and soaking her down to her skin in patches where it had begun to thin with the change of seasons. She shook her own pelt out as the peal of thunder rolled across the sky, her drastic motion covering her own flinch and preventing her from seeing Mapplethorpe’s own. She looked back to him with a sheepish grin as his chuckle met her ears, convinced that her shake had not covered her own flinch as well as she may have liked.

Picking up her paws, she quickened her pace to a lope to get them both out of the rain sooner, using the cliffs that lined the Pass to provide what little shelter it could offer them. Quickly the ground began to steepen and the course of water that ran through the center of their home swelled and roared as its stony banks continued to contain the sudden influx of water. The banks held for now, but she had to wonder how they would stand the full onslaught of the spring rains...?

Finally, the cave she called her own came into sight, and with it, the tree under which her faithful advisor had made his own den. She would not begrudge him the warmth and dryness of her own stone den should he wish to escape the rain sooner, but nor would she force the confines on him. With a final smile over her shoulder through the rain, she dipped her head and entered the darkness beyond. Free from the rain at last.

It seemed she hadn't seen him jolt and he mentally let out a sigh of relief. Without further delay, she stepped past him and together, with her leading him under and through the sheets of downpour, they made their way into the heartland of the Pass, their pack territory. He stopped to shake his rugged coat a few times but easily caught up to her with a few bounding leaps. More flashes of lightning, followed closely by the roar of thunder came and went. The closer the storm became, the brighter it blaze and the louder it cracked, but his ears quickly became selectively deaf to it as he focused on where Naira placed her feet when their short trek came to a steeper part of the land.

In a matter of moments the welcoming sight of his tree came into view and though Mapplethorpe initially set his eyes upon it, his gaze immediately went to Naira's den and the sight of her crawling into it and out of the rainfall. He took a deep breath as he considered leaving his Queen to allow her to rest. It was only until he was about halfway in walking towards his designated sleeping quarters that he stopped and turned around. The chill in the air and the sounds of the tempest overhead made him change his mind. Perhaps in her den of stone she would still be cold, and perhaps he would finally be allowed entrance and the grace of her company. With Datura and Adonis out of sight, now was his chance to steal away the moments he had been hungering for since she had first came upon him on the mountain with the promise of a pack.

Mapplethorpe turned fully around and though he could not see her in the depths of her abode, he eagerly strode back. Once at the entryway, he was instantly hit with her scent. It made him shudder but once he had collected himself he exhaled slowly and stepped quietly inside. He was careful to just step out of the storm before settling down, his damp mottled body effortlessly becoming a sort of shield against the wind. For as long as she would have him, he would stay... an ever-watchful guard of sorts while the both of them waited for the princes to return.
