Lily Aquila
The sky is dark with stormclouds

whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But, first,
Lily Aquila
they must catch you; be cunning, and full of tricks...

Wet. Wet, wet, wet and cold. Even though ankle deep snow had set in, the area formerly known as Secret Falls was still well underwater. The pale yearling paced - up and down, up and down - as though her sheer stubborn will would be enough to make the waters recede and reveal to her the lands she had once called her home. She sighed with frustration before sitting her rear down, her brows drawn together in deep thought. Was anybody left? Where would they have gone?

She eyed the mountains with trepidation - she was adventurous, yes, but that adventurous? After all it had been her itchy feet that landed her in this mess to start with... Just a little bit further... she had told herself. I’ll see home soon and then I’ll go back... but the directional sense of a pup was far less honed than that of a yearling and she quickly found herself turned about, chasing the whispers of memories of a time long past.

Something about that mountain though... It called to her. She supposed it had always loomed off in the distance but this was something more... Something deeper. No - that was silly. She had been born on the boggy earth of the Fen and that was where she belonged - or had belonged. With a final frustrated huff she decided it was time to move on. To travel west - over the mountains, with no idea what would be waiting for her on the other side.

Mace Attaya
He relived it every night.

There was not a moment when Mace Attaya closed his eyes that he was not assaulted by a barrage of images and sounds that he could not shake. The rain had poured for what felt like an eternity, day after day, night after night, relentless. Day after day and night after night, Maksim had left the wolves tucked in the den to check the state of the river, but none of them had anticipated its noble escape from its banks, and the following flooding of their homeland. None of them but Ava, whose concern had spared the lives of her, her husband, and at least one of her sons. Rowan's whereabouts had become uncertain following the initial escape, and in the chaos none of them had been able to locate Cinder or Quil. Of their deaths in the cruel grasp of the flood, the remaining Attaya clan had been certain.

All but Mace, who believed deeply that he would feel the death of his siblings on a spiritual level, and though he mourned with his family and though the words convinced him it was true, he could not wholly believe it. A part of him rebelled against what seemed to be fact. It was this part of him that, over a month later, had suddenly seized the reins and directed him back to this place, this hell that he had left behind. He didn't know what to expect, but when the boy's paws finally sunk into the waterlogged snow at the edge of Darkwater Rapids' former territory, what he found resembled nothing he had ever known.

The flood had been powerful: trees with weaker root systems had been torn from the ground and tipped by the force of the water and the swift erosion. Where the communal den had been was now a makeshift pond, and any semblance of its architecture had been erased by the destructive floodwaters. Any sign that wolves had once lived here had been wiped out, and Mace's hopes of finding the water receded and the land habitable again were dashed with the discovery of areas of stagnant water high enough to reach his chest.

He had not remained there long. He had quickly turned his back on it, loath to behold any more of the wreckage that was left of his family's home and his parents' kingdom. He had picked a direction, any direction in his mind, and he had gone in it, and that was how he came across another like-aged individual, standing at the edge of another waterlogged territory — this had not been Darkwater Rapids turf, but something else, whose name he didn't know — and with her discovery, a sense of sorrow washed over him.

Was she, like he, displaced? Was her family gone? Did she stand here, mourning the ghost of a pack that had gone on without her, or maybe died in a flood that had come on too quickly to avoid? Although all these things were uncertain, Mace didn't hesitate to chuff out a woof upon seeing her, hoping to halt her progress and determine what information she could give him about his home, his friends, and his missing family.

Lily Aquila

Although she hadn’t really managed to spend any quality time with the packs pups, she knew them by sight... back when they were only half her size and usually happily romping about in the company of their parents. The wolf that chuffed at her, although younger by a year already towered over her meagre height, even if he still had some filling out to do, it was an intimidating sight to the already uncertain girl. A wave of her tail signaled recognition, but the way it pointed to the ground screamed of uncertainty. Her ears angled away to signal no challenge and her head dipped comfortably level with her relaxed shoulders. Her mismatched eyes roved carefully over the boy, taking in the features of his face, his body. She was sure he was one of the Rapids pups... Did that mean the pack was still around?

“I-I got lost.” she admitted somewhat sheepishly, her awkward grin conveying her embarrassment. “I... have you seen @Maksim? Or @Ava?” she questioned the youth, avoiding referring to her as his mother just in case she was mistaken. He stood so confidently she could not comprehend that he might just happen be as alone as she was.

A gust of wind bought the scent of a stale kill to her nose and her stomach voiced its displeasure at its hollowness with a positively embarrassing borborygmus groan. In any other circumstance she would chase the scent down and investigate, but if the rest of the pack was nearby perhaps it would be best to rally them as a whole and drag it back to a cache? Either way she would need to apologise to Ava for her absence and beg forgiveness before she tended to the needs of her aching stomach.

I kind of derped and thought Lily was from the most recent Aquila litter OOPS >_> We'll pretend Mace didn't think she was the same age initially.

His tongue poked out between his lower canines appeasingly when Lily's gaze found his. Respectfully, he dropped his to the snow underfoot before lifting it to focus on her chin, though his periphery caught the wave of her tail. It made him uncertain, as well; there was familiarity in her bearing, but despite wracking his memory, Mace could not recall ever seeing her. It might have been he was too young to properly memorize the faces he had seen, or perhaps she simply knew something he didn't know. He made no comment, for the pallid female was already speaking.

Even as his ears tilted to listen, he caught himself admiring her. She stood shorter than he, yet there was a distinct femininity in this that he appreciated. Her coat was flawless, as pure as it could get, and her eyes were a sharp yellow-gold that demanded attention. There was an interesting twist of blue in the left eye, but rather than detracting from her appearance, it lent her something unique. Although Mace was nowhere near the age of being sexually attracted to others, he was certainly not too young to notice females, particularly pretty, older ones. Still, nobility held his tongue as she asked after Maksim and Ava, and his sense of honour inwardly berated his senseless ogling.

I have not seen Maksim since before the flood, he admitted. I was hoping to find him, myself. Mother — Ava — is no longer in the Lore. She and my father left when the Rapids flooded. I was with them, but I came back to find my sisters. Entirely too willing to spill all of his secrets out, Mace contently let his behind touch the chill snow as he relaxed into a sit, though there was still a deliberate show of respect in his stance and his ears. They had turned back toward his nape, and the tilt of his nose earthward gave the impression of looking politely up at her, despite being taller. Did you know them?

There was a compulsion for him to add how do you know me to the query, but seeing as there was no proof of her knowing him aside from a familiar wave of her tail that may well have meant nothing, he silenced the desire. Being an undesirable tracker, he hadn't yet noticed the scent drifting in the air, though no doubt it wouldn't be long before he did.
