Maksim Baranski

Everyone felt his anger, clearly, as all fell silent when the River leader's voice boomed out. The loner immediately tucked himself away, ears pressed against his skull and tail coiled up between his legs. They let out a high pitched whine at the agouti beast's charge and Lalani was quick to try and defend herself, pleading her case again. He snorted, like a bull ready to lower its horns and charge. She claimed to have taken care of Bastet but all Maksim could wonder was who on Earth that was. His eyes flicked, momentarily, to Ubasti. Was she this “Bastet” character? It mattered little right now. What was more important was that this vagabond who had been allowed to take what was rightfully Cut Rock River's food left. So when Maksim snapped at the lad, it was understandable they were more than willing to escape with a brief, fleeting whine.

As soon as the boy ws gone, the agouti wolf was quick to take his position in front of Lalani. He stood tall, tail held erect and muzzle wrinkled, yet no snarl vibrated in his chest. “Don't think me a forgetful or absent minded fool, Callahan. I know of the food you've brought back,” his words were low yet his gaze was burning fiercly, as magma oozed beneath his skin and within his veins. “But you should know that no wolf is to be offered food on this land unless they are pack.” His jaw was clenched, as Maksim directed his gaze to the woman who had told him her name was Ubasti. “She is pack. No technicality involved.” Immediately his gaze returned to Lalani, becoming harsh and clearly frustrated. There was a pause as he stared her down before his jaws parted and he grabbed her muzzle in a dominating hold. He did it once before and he was more than willing to do it again, remind her of her place: she was the lowest of the pack.

Maksim released the girl's muzzle and snorted in frustration. “If I see you offering some loner food on the borders ever again, Callhan, I won't hesitate to remove you from my home. Now leave—return to the territory.” He focused on Ubasti now, his gaze not as harsh. “You will stay with me. We need to strip down the remaining meat and store it.” That, and he needed to ask about this Ubasti-Bastet situation.

Lalani Callahan
Lalani did not turn her gaze to the alpha, afraid of digging her grave any deeper than it was. Instead, she watched Jessup. The change in the snarky male was immediate and not at all dignified. His sarcastic smile had wilted molding itself into a fearful grimace. His body curled in on itself, making him smaller and he let out a high pitched while, rather close to a squeal. He looked small, weak and insignificant. Much like a posy. It was rather disappointing. Lani had hoped for more from the wolf, though she had no room to talk. Hadn't she done damn near the same thing went she had first met Maksim? Jessup quickly gathered himself before fleeing from the scene, his tail tucked tight between his legs. Lani was rather sad to see him go. She was sure they would have had a hell of a time together.

Turning back to the matter at hand, she kept her eyes down cast. She hoped and dreaded the fact that Maksim might see her growing anger. Ya. Sure she had messed up, but everyone did from time to time. Surely what she had managed to do so far made up for that? She had been nothing but loyal to this pack, even though she hardly knew many of the members within it. When Maksim finally spoke, his voice was harsh and full of menace. Saying that he wasn't pleased would be an understatement. What he said though almost made her laugh, which would only have served to get her in more trouble. So he had noticed the things she did. Well, sure could have fooled me. The big alpha continued to scold her. Well, if she hadn't known not to share her food before, at least she did now. Lani couldn't help but wonder how Maksim had much claim on anything that was outside his borders. When he mentioned the fact that Bastet, was in fact, part of the pack, Lani looked her over curiously. She hadn't smelled much of the pack on her. And if she was, why was she in such horrid condition and all on her own? It was baffling. Had she been one of the pack members to accept her, she would have stuck to her like glue. She didn't see the point in taking in a wolf if you were just going to let them waste away anyway. It took Lani a second to realize what was happening as Maksim stepped forward. When she did, she froze, afraid she might do something she'd regret. Squeezing her eyes tight, she stood still as Maksim grabbed her muzzle, telling her exactly what he thought of her.

When he finally released her, Lani took a grateful step back, away from her angry alpha. He continued to order her in that harsh voice of his. You're right, you won't catch me doing that again. Out loud she said, "I understand." She quickly turned on her paws and began to head back to the territory, just like he had told her too. Although reluctantly. Catching a scent on the breeze, she veered towards the source. Finding a small rabbits nest, she began scrabbling at the opening. She was hoping to scare the creature out the back entrance, which by the smell of it, was only a few feet away. So when the small animal came darting right between her paws and straight at her face, it took a second to realize what was happening. Recovering quickly, Lani managed to turn and snatch the rabbit, wrapping her jaws over its back. Giving it a few sharp and repeated shakes, she finally heard its spine crack and it fell limp. Holding it firmly in her jaws, she trotted over to the rabbit's escape route. She snorted around the catch. The hole was completely covered in snow. A drift had formed where the rabbit would normally have been able to flee. Sighing, she turns and begins heading back towards the den. No doubt one of the pups would need a meal. I don't even know why I bother. Its not like he's going to appreciate anything I do anyway. I'm never going to be good enough, hell, I doubt anyone is. She continued on with her kill though, because even if she didn't like Maksim, the pack needed someone to take care of them.

Bastet Akhenaten
Bastet is so awkward around Maksim, she doesn't want to get chewed out lol

It happened so fast. Within minutes of Maksim's appearance he had chased off Jessup who had participated in eating some of the food that was rightfully the property of Cut Rock River, and then chewed out Lalani for allowing him in the festivities. It was understandable, considering such hard times, but she couldn't help thinking of how harsh the male had been on the lowest ranking member who was just looking out for her fellow wolf. There was nothing wrong in being kind, but than again, she supposed there was a time and place to take away from the mouths of her pack mates--though she would be forever grateful in the woman for helping her find the carcasses. When Lalani too fled, she felt the pressure to perform in the company of her alpha, no doubt the ashen male was still fuming from the actions of his lowest pack member therefore she watched her step carefully. She couldn't afford being chewed out, especially since joining recently.

She obeyed the orders of Maksim without speaking, and stepped toward the deer remains with her head lowered and tail tucked beneath her legs. Whining just slightly, she was delicate in tearing into the meat that remained and cast a glance in the ashen male's direction every so often expecting him to say something about her involvement. Though she was the first in welcoming Jessup, she had not offered the male any food would be sure to acknowledge this if her alpha asked. It was only when she had gotten to the rump of the deer, where the most meat resided, that she caught the draft in the air and wondered if it would be worth it to leave her alpha in search of the stench of rabbit. She thought to ask him first, "shall I go search for that rabbit sir, I've stripped down the deer as much as I could..." not that she couldn't tear into the meat more, but live meat was much more tempting than frozen. She thought to search out the water as well, in case winter was kind enough to provide them with trapped fish, and report her findings to Maksim if needed be.
