It felt like it was only yesterday when the lupus stumbled into this new world and found himself lost in a place he has never been before. In fact, it was only yesterday that the male canine finally felt like his long distance travel might be over and he has found a place to find a home. Since the age of two, Maverick had been on his own for almost three years now as a lone wolf. At the age of four, the four legged creature was ready to settle down or at least find a place to stay for a while. Although the sun was covered by thick grey clouds this morning, a cool gust of wind sent the fresh greened leaves in a graceful dance while creatures of all different sizes woke from their nightly slumber.

A fairly large sized creature trotted across the orchard in a steady pace, long elegant strides made the canine appear to be almost floating rather than trotting. His muscular shoulder blades and hips rose and fell with each step the male wolf took. Ebony ears twitched when a little song bird chirped their spring morning delights in it, only to quickly hide in the trees before the scarred creature. A muffled soft chuckle rumbled in the lupus chest until the dark headed canine muzzle opened wide in an over overexerted still tired yawn. The dog could fell his stiff joints loosen from the make shift den he had to stay in overnight, the den being way too small for a creature his size.

After his morning run to warm his cool blood and just a small hare to satisfy his stomach from now, the golden and ebony canine came to a light walk as he swayed through the fruit covered trees. A gust of wind whirled past the canine, his bi-colored nostrils flared instantly to take in the smell of spring and the scent of sweet berries that swirled in his nose. Mav paused in his tracks while his warm gaze glanced about the land, unsure of where he should head next. Should he travel with the day and follow the sun as it reach above him and fall on the horizon? Or should the lupus travel opposite from the suns natural line? Decisions… decisions…

She had missed the open air as she had missed no other thing. The taste of the air was sweet on her tongue as it lapped the coolness of the morning. The hint of the unripen berries was a fragrance to tease the nostrils as she stretched taking the land underpaw with a deserved sense of freedom. Her delve into the Thicket had been torturous and long, subjecting the large beast to the limitations of space and the rebellious thorns of the wild nature of the woodlands. No greater hell had she overcome than that, poked and relentlessly scraped and prodded. But unto her was deliverance taken by a jaunt through open fields greatly desired and the soft warmth of the morning as it touched her weathered face.

For a moment she had forgotten the hunger that plagued her. The fatigue that bore her down many a day and left her to curl in some hollow to rest. She was reminded only of the sun, the land, the air and its many scents. She was reminded of the calling that had compelled her to leave the stability of her life behind, and mark a new path into the Wildwood, strange and unknown. It had been so long she since reflected upon this and found again the pleasure in her ambitious pursuit. Many a day, if not weeks had passed since the white noise of the mind took hold and left her in silence. Undoubtedly it was nice to reflect upon her thoughts once again. But there was more to the day than to allow herself to ponder.

As the morning unfolded and stretched across a waning violet sky, she too reached across the fields with eager stride, as if to touch upon the distance before the sky turned blue. Her steps were sound, a rolling thunder that muted the chatter of the morning birds. Wide and careless, there were without the finesse of a graceful, flowing thing. She walked as a beast upon the earth in her freedom, muzzle high as it inhaled deeply the stirred life of the morning, then falling swiftly to the side as the whole of the great thing slipped heavily only the powdered ground below. A sated thing, she crooned with the delight as the coolness of the earth seeped through the heavy coat and finely graced the worn flesh to give it the calm it desired.

How good it was to again be in the open and free.

The athletic toned male felt his stiff muscles loosen with each gentle stride he took, paws grazed the forest floor as his dark citrine irises flickered over the unripe berry trees around him. The sounds of unsettled creatures and leaves that rustled all round him made the canine’s ears twitched. A low uneasy growl rumbled in his cheats as the scarred beast slowed his pace, a sense of him being follower overwhelmed him as his black ears fell back slightly and his stance took on a more dominate and intimidating posture. A huff came from the canine as his steps slowed into a stop and his ears flickered to each sound he could here.

It was when the ebony headed canine heard something large rustle behind him that made the canine’s heart race, pound against his cheats as the lupus swiftly turned to face what was stalking him this morning. Blacken lips started to peel back and ears fell back as Mav ready himself for an unwelcome attack from his follower, probably one of the males from the previous pack he came across getting revenge for mingling with their females. But when his warm eyes fell on a lighter colored beauty that strolled carelessly behind him, Maverick’s expression quickly shifted into a small smile and his stance to on a more relax demeanor. The male gazed upon golden eyes of the she wolf as he approached her, this female being one of the few wolves he has seen sense he arrived here.

“You gave me quite a start my dear,” Maverick chuckled lightly as the black headed lupus greeted the she wolf with a playful smirk, “I thought you were someone else coming to rip my head off.” The canine let the thought of some male wolf attempting to rip his head off, but it only made the lupus laugh to himself that another wolf could even get close to being so without feeling Maverick tare them apart. But the though quickly vanished as he introduced himself to the lone female wolf. “Hello my dear,” the battle wore male greeted with a friendly tone, “I am Maverick.” The canine let himself fall into a small bow to the lovely female, his head ducked down only for a moment before his gazed held hers once more. “Are you from around here dear?” the canine questioned as he stood proud before the lovely she wolf, “I am a little lost. Being new to the arena, it seems as if I am heading in circles. Well… if feels that way anyway. Would you mind helping little old me?” The large creature fell silent as he waited to see if the female was nice enough to help the poor lonely lost loner.

Her roll within the fields was deep, though short-lived, as sense became her eventually and she catered to a more composed romp through its stretches. There were none to watch her, as far as she was aware, though it did not quiet that sense of self that implored a more couth behavior while in the open lands. It came from the pack that watched her even when her distance from them was great. Upon each return there were a slight prodding at her behavior, her steps, her conduct, her actions even when she thought she was alone. The wolves of the mountains- and inevitable the sparse woodlands- had been masters of deception in hiding their presence. Their numbers too when they felt them dwindle. It was a same such a skill had not been gifted to her as well. The woman’s size had it difficult for any part of her to remain hidden for long…

Never the less, the eyes of the ghosts of the past bore into her relentless encouraging her change in demeanor. Though she was glad for the space to wander within, she took care of her steps and minded the short trees yet to grow and blossom with their fruit. A more calculated pace allotted her the opportunity to look ahead again at the horizon glowing brighter in the distance… and the dark splotch in her vision growing larger with a recognizable form and shape.

Immediately she halted, donning her ears forward as the whole of her massive frame slouched into a defensive posture. Supposedly, crossing paths with others in this strange wildwood was inevitable, however it did not prepare her for meeting another face so soon. Her lip quiver slightly, a mere reflex when action bode better for her than speech. She implored the male to remain where he was, allowing her to visibly assess him before allowing another step forward.

Her body remained still down her ears danced to the enthusiasm of his voice and pitch. Neither was it a dance of enjoyment or disdain. A habitual dance to imply her listening to his explanation. Why wolves these days felt the need to speak on first encounter as beyond her, but she was begrudgingly coming to accept this was the way it would be. “K’arnae,” she mumbled curtly, then let her ears fall back once the onslaught of pleasant expression ceased. He wanted her help, but she knew little of what to tell him let alone offer him. Her own experience in the strange place was limited at best, yet if it would ease him of his way, she offered what little she knew.

The female breathed softly. “Behind is a Thicket… and there in it lives a pack. I think north of here there is a large field of black-looking seeds… small fruit that grows on bushes. And from there, a misty woodland where moss grows heavy from the trees…” Her knowledge of the place expended, her voice drifted off as her bi-colored eyes turned behind in direction of the Thicket.

The canine has met his fair share of characters through his three years of travels. But like always, there are those few who still surprise him to this day and will until the end. This she wolf was one of those characters he has yet to meet or has met, but only a select few. Maverick could sense something odd about this lighter wolf, yet something very familiar at the same time. It was not like it was weird per say, more like something the canine remembered but hardly used and surprised the female used it. The she wolf used her body language to talk instead of just… talking. That was, until Maverick made her talk. But even when her words came out, they were short and direct.

This was something all wolves did automatically or naturally. Wolves and many creatures alike use their own body to show emotion and talk with another creature. But most wolves actually spoke to one another and used body language as a secondary emotion, to reinforce or to act on show. Although the canine was familiar with this kind of speech, having once met a wolf who was mute, it was when she spoke that it through him off a little and her words almost seemed harsh like he has insulted. But even has the cream colored wolf motioned to the direction she was mentioning, the male could not help but wonder what made her act this way. Was this how her pack communicated or was there something more?

Either way, the ebony headed canine only gave the lovely female a soft grin and a polite nod. “It’s nice to meet you K’arnae,” the canine replied in a low friendly tone, “I am Maverick.” The wolf dipped his head in a respectable bow, paused for a brief moment, and rose to meet her gaze once more as he returned to his confident stance. Black head high, long legs stiff, and tail up high to slightly curled towards his back, once perched ears fell back slightly, and expression soft as he tried to seem like less of a threat to the she wolf in hope she would not be so harsh on him.

“A pack you say,” the lupus repeated with a light chuckle at the thought of being a part of a pack once more, “Interesting. I have not been in a pack in a while. I might have to give them a visit to see if they know more about the area or maybe if they could mind letting me stay for a day or two.” The male canine felt the cool morning breeze brush passed him. The scent of premature fruit tickled his bi colored nose while Maverick turned too glanced in the direction as she. “This pack you speak of” the male questioned with a sense of curiosity, “Do you know them? Have you met any of them?” Maybe the she wolf belonged to this pack. It would explain her behavior a little more than just being odd, a loner male that looked to be a trouble maker close to pack borders was definitely cause an alarm. Mav turned his warm gaze back the female lupus, unsure of maybe he should just leave or continue to make small talk with the beauty.

Allowing the image of the Thicket to fade from view, she gave her attention to the dual colored male once again. Cordially her head dipped in semblance of a greeting though her expression remained as passive as it had when addressed. And it remained thus, only altering slightly when he mentioned the pack behind her. Of course she had met those that dwelled within it, seemingly one after the other. It was quite clear they claimed it as well as the treacherous grounds that surrounded it. And in the open fields themselves, perhaps not in claim but as a channel for travel. There was almost no escaping them, considering how close the neighboring grounds were.

The woman breathed softly, quieting down her turbulent thoughts before she settled on something more benign and useful. ”I do not know their ways,” she answered simply and quietly. ”…but I have met them,” her tail twisted in thought. ”They are quick to accuse,” she continued with biased. ”…waste their words instead of speaking what is important…” There was more she could have divulge by her experiences, but she was not bothered to taint the ears of a stranger. She knew better than to force her own impressions on another. If he wished to know of the wolves in the Thicket, then it would be for him to discover rather than hear of her exploits secondhand. ”Though,” she continued, as her worn voice began to drift. ”I do not believe they would grant you days of rest without bartering. None are so kind…”
