It had been a long day for Fly. She had spent most of it out exploring the woods again, hoping to find her next great adventure. She was sleeping soundly, dreaming of actually catching one of those pesky two-legged mice. She had just sank her teeth into her prey, a feeling of victory pumping through her veins, when a terrified howl in the distance startled her. She dropped her prey and whipped around, only to find herself jumping to her paws in her den.
Dang it, it was just a dream, she thought to herself as she growled in frustration. But what had woken her up so suddenly? Had that been apart of her dream too?
Curious, the lithe, russet hued hunter took a quick stroll through the downs to inspect her other pack mates. Had it been one of them that howled? This night was very dark; no moon or stars to light the way. Instead, Fly relied on her sense of smell to lead her to each of her pack mates. It didn't take her long to find the one responsible for the howling. Fly didn't know his name but she had seen him once before when an intruder her crossed into the Downs. He was bigger than she was but not very large, though she remembered that he was a yearling so that could change. His fur was a deep brown color that matched well with his orange eyes. Fly had not spoken to him before; he had been very quiet that day at the border.
Then Fly noticed that he was moving. Was he still dreaming? Should she wake him? He must be having a nightmare if he was howling like that. But Fly wasn't completely sure that he wasn't already awake. Surely he must have awoken when he screamed. Curious, Fly took a few wary steps towards her pack mate. Scared that if the male was still sleeping and she woke him he would be startled and lash out at her, Fly kept her head and tail down to signal she was not a threat. Then, in her usual high-pitch bell like voice, Fly called out from where she was:
"Hey! Excuse me!" She tried to whisper, feeling like it would be rude to start shouting in the middle of the night, but she wanted to make sure she was loud enough that he would hear her even if he was sleeping. The result was an awkward whisper/shout.
"Hey are you awake? If not then you should probably wake up!" She anxiously took one more step forward, now only a few tail lengths away from him.
