Hawthorne Selwyn
For @Sachiel <3 || Sunset, Mostly Sunny, -14°F (-26°C)

Leaving home to scout again felt odd. There was the bubbling fear that'd she'd run into her mother again. Could she handle her emotions the next time? What if she snapped and said or did something worse? The thoughts left her with a sick feeling as her paws twisted into the cold earth. Her back was up against one of the strange trees she had stumbled upon as she stared down at the ground. Maybe she had been too harsh. Telling her to stay away from the falls might have been a bit excessive...

A huff left her and trailed out into the air in wisps. She was being selfish wallowing in her own problems. Cottongrass was missing and Plant boy had run into his own dad. Hawthorne should have been looking for Cotton or making sure that her friend was okay. Slowly she stood up and released the snow from her bulking form. She was no good as a sulker. Askan and Reyes would surely give her the boot if she slacked too much.

Things had been different since the troublemakers had encountered Pumpkin Eyes’ mother. The relationship between his friend and her mother was much different than the one between him and his father. Sachiel had chosen to leave, on his own accord. Initially he had intended to go back, return to his mother and father after he completed his grand adventure, but the further he went the more he realized that the Vale had never been a home to him. Even with his parents present. It was just the place where he was born with a handful of memories collected during his stay. His mother had never been present, usually patrolling or whatever, but his father had always tried. After his meeting with his father Sachiel had realized that his parents had fallen out of love with each other, which made sense for their absent behaviour. But at least Draven had tried. He’d even gone looking for him and succeeded in finding him.

Pumpkin Eyes’ mother had abandoned her, which was far worse than the boy wandering away from his parents (and pack). She had left her daughter and expected everything to be hunky dory once they reunited. He hoped he never saw the dark-furred woman again, for he would make damn sure she never got close to his friend ever again.

He stalked after the greyscale girl, his long legs carrying him quickly through the compact snow as he followed her trail. She wasn’t her usual cheery self and Sachiel wanted to change that, even if it meant pestering her.

It did not take him long to find her, his mismatched eyes narrowing in determination as he flattened his gangly body against the cold ground. With a crooked grin unfolding across his dark maw the boy flung himself into the air, aiming for her shoulders as he attempted to bear hug her from above and pull her into the snow. If he missed he’d be getting a face full of well-deserved snow…

Her companion succeeded in his attack. With a heavy thud she met the snow ground, jaws parted to try and grab hold of whoever had gotten her. But orange eyes spotted the familiar fur and glimpse of yellow and blue. It was just Plant Boy. That didn't mean he was in the clear, though. Instead of teeth she would try to swat him with a paw on the nose. I could've killed ya! She said while trying to hold back a smile. Hawthorne didn't think she was capable of killing anyone yet but she could certainly give a good little fight.

The Edge girl decided to stay down on the snowy ground, wondering if her friend would do the same or if he had other ideas. What are you doin' out here? A speckled brow raised above curious eyes. She never thought the same question could or might be applied to her too.

The boy was dazed by his own success—or it was the boop to the nose he’d been given by his peppered companion. A wide, goofy grin tugged at the corners of his mouth as he remained seated on her, his bi-coloured eyes rolling at her comment. Ya right, he retorted quickly, his head tipping to the side. Sure, she was feisty, but the agouti Leigh was much quicker than his plump friend. You’d be so lonely if you killed me, he added before flopping to the side, releasing the girl from his weight as he sunk into the snow. He embraced the sudden temperature change with open paws (both figuratively and literally) as he rolled to his stomach and splayed his limbs out.

I was lookin’ for you, he answered quickly at her question as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. The two were never far apart from each other. He’d gotten used to having her as his shadow, or vice versa, and it felt strange when she was not around, as though something was missing. Sachiel was truly grateful to have found her, for he would have likely returned to the place with the dreadful orange leaves if he had not. He'd never admit it aloud, but it was her that had convinced him to join Askan’s band of misfits, even if she hadn’t tried that hard to convince him.

Hawthorne gave a snort of laughter at his declaration that she would be lonely. No way. There are other wolves at the Shallows I can follow around. She said with a light joking tone. She didn't really want to kill her plant friend of all wolves, though. The Edge kid knew she might not be lonely but she sure would miss him. Plant Boy was irreplaceable even if she didn't dare tell him.

Well ya found me. The peppered girl said as her tail gave a few brief thumps against the snow. Now what? She said softly as she moved to plant her face into Plant Boy's shoulder. Her face was warmer and more comfortable there anyway. Hawthorne wasn't trying to be affectionate because that would be weird and icky. Wel...not icky but certainly weird.

It certainly was feasible. She could find other wolves to fill her time with. With bigger, better personalities. Who weren’t as dull as he was. A frown creased his dark features, his brows knitting together as he observed his peppered friend. Were they just friends out of convenience? Until someone else their age came along and stole her attention? No, that was preposterous. He was an utter fool for thinking something so ridiculous! Pumpkin Eyes would have given him a good thwack up the side of his head if he had voiced his thoughts aloud. They were two peas in a pod; he couldn’t fathom the idea of them not being friends. Sure, he hummed in response to her first comment, a single brow arched as he studied her with a cheeky expression, if y’like boring, grumpy wolves. Not that Askan and Reyes were boring—the Edge Lords were the exact opposite—but they were grumpy. Pumpkin Eyes would grow bored very quickly if he wasn’t around… all the lame adult stuff would be too much for her.

His brows tightened as she leaned into his shoulder, his tail flicking behind him. He stiffened, unsure of how to react, for the agouti boy didn’t respond to touching very well. Observing was more his style—colours and shapes—but touching? It was like an explosion of all the colours, all at once, and he couldn’t comprehend it.

Now what? He hadn't thought that far ahead. Finding her had been the goal, but he hadn’t thought about what would happen once he had found her. Um, he started awkwardly as he pushed the snow around with his forepaws, I think I saw a den while I was followin' you. Wanna see if there’s anything hiding in it? He suggested, his nose angled to the side so he could get a better look at the orange-eyed girl at his side.
