Wild Rye Fields Dog days of summer

The sun was everywhere. Nikolai groaned softly as his small slender head poked out of the birthing den, after a few attempts, he had realized that he and his sister @Vasilisa hadn’t needed to keep exiting the den rump first. There was a grin on the child’s lips as his baby blue gaze darted around the now familiar clearing that was their home. His nose twitched, picking up the scent of his dozing sister inside. Usually, she was always the first up, but not this time, Nikolai peered around once more. Like any good child, he wanted to explore a bit on his own.

He didn’t detect his parent's scents, which meant they had to be off doing adult stuff. The air was warmer then it had been. He cocked his growing head to the side, things seemed...different. A Lot of the foliage had lost its lush color, replaced by a brown almost brittle and sickly dried brown. Approaching a dried out fern the pup sniffed at it, tail wagging vigorously behind him as he nipped at the stalk, shaking it to and fro within his grasp as he growled softly before prancing back and forth a few paces.

It was true, the younger Artemieva pup was usually the first to be up but today that wasnt the case. Vasi had a secret adventure the night before so she was enjoying sleeping in. Pleasant puppy dreams danced in her head until a crunching noise outside the den pulled her from dreamland. Her eyes slowly blinked open before a mighty yawn hit her tawny maw. Licking her lips Vasi became aware that her brother had beaten her to go explore!


Now that just wouldn't do!


She bounded out of the den with her tail wagging ferociously behind her rump. Puppy blue eyes fell on her littermate holding a dried fern. Her head cocked to the side at the sight of the tiny dark boy with this giant brown twig. She just had to help. With a loud yip the tawny pup bounded towards Nikolai. She went for the other end of the fern leaf hoping to grab it and take it where ever Niko was planning on going with it.

The small tawny male had been lost in his own little world, his eyes closed as he growled softly and shook the giant twig. Suddenly it seemed to jerk back against him. It was alive! His blue eyes shot open as he squeaked in protest and fear. He could of sworn that it had been dead when he had unceremoniously yanked it up from the ground. His panic died down once he recognized his sister’s shape, how could he have missed it? He had known her and her scent all of his life.

Realizing that she wasn’t trying to snatch it from him, and the relief that it hadn’t been alive, he growls softly and playfully as he braced his paws against the ground. His tail wagged rapidly behind him as he tugged at the branch, there was the soft glimmer of a challenge in his eyes as he tugged backward with it, daring @Vasilisa to pull back, even hoping she would.

So excited for this!

With the fern tightly in her maw Vasi watched her brother sort of freak out for a moment before realizing she was there. A muffled laugh came from her as he jumped before calming down. He then began to tug on the fern while growling trying to bait her into a game of tug-of-war. Of course she would play! The youngest Artemieva was always up for a challenge. So she pulled back, her paws shifting against the dirt. Her own playful growl rumbled from her as she pulled with all her puppy might. With Niko digging his paws into the dirt it was taking all her might to move him the tiny bit that she did. She would win, she had to, one way or another.

The older sibling wasn’t aware of the advantages of keeping a low profile or his slightly heavier weight. His small ears perked when he heard the muffled laugh, his brows creasing as he scowled. His growl grows slightly as he started to twist his head, with the fern firmly clasped between his tiny fangs, he was sure he could shake her loose! He started to lean forward from her pulling, his tail thrashing wildly behind him as he closed his eyes on connection and started to pull back slightly. The strain was too much for the stalk however and near the center, the thin brittle fibers started to fray from the titanic force of the puppy powerhouses yanking on it.

She tugged with all her might pulling in small bursts pulling her brother towards her. She was unaware of the fern leaf starting to fray in the middle. So she continued to pull and shake her head back and fourth. Finally the twins might was too much for the twig to take and it snapped sending them both tumbling backwards. Coming to a stop Vasi picked herself up and bounded towards her brother. She was going to take full advantage of this and get the upper paw. She pounced on him trying to pin him to the ground and grab his ear.

Like many twins, Nikolai was mirroring his sister almost perfectly, growling and tugging backward, He felt himself shift forward slightly, that’s when he decided it was best to give a yank of his own. Things happened so quickly, he wasn't sure what had just taken place. One moment, they were equal, terrorizing the vegetation like good cubs, when suddenly, he felt the resistance slacked he stumbled backward. Clearly, as his furry rump hit the ground, Nikolai realized that he must have won. He had managed to yank his sister forward, he opened his eyes, expecting to see her sprawled out before him.

Instead, he yelped in terror as she came charging toward him. Why couldn’t she have lost graciously? Instead, her weight pressed down against him, knocking him onto his back. He squeaked when he felt her dull fangs tugging at his poor sensitive ears. Squirming and desperately trying to dislodge his sibling, he failed but went limp as he got sudden, might he even add, brilliant idea. For good measure, he let his tongue hang out the side of his mouth as he tried to play dead.

She squealed in delight as her milk teeth found their purchase on his tender puppy ears. She tugged as a way to combat his kicks and flailing until the most curious thing happened. Niko fell limp and his tongue fell out of his mouth. A worried whine came from the younger pup as she released his ear and clamored off of him. Her worry grew the longer her brother laid there.

Did she break him? No worse! Kill him?!?

Frantic barks and whines came from Vasi as she nosed the boy with her tiny coal nose, willing begging him to get him. Who would she play with? Not to mention how mad mama and daddy would be that she broke Nikoali.

The boy was still as he could be, which was hard with his sister’s constant nudging and poking. Keeping his eyes closed in concentration, he tried not to move, even though his flanks rose and fell with each breath. What was he supposed to do now? How did you act dead? It was something new for him and there wasn’t exactly anyone he could ask about it.

The sudden whines caused his ears to perk, was something wrong with his sister? Suddenly, he burst back to life, flailing his little limbs and squeaking “Varrrrr!” as he leaped up and flung himself at his sister. It was time to teach her a lesson! With a limited repertoire of aggressive moves to use, Nikolai settled for the most effective he could think of. He tried to plant his furry butt atop his sister and sit on her.

Her brother still wasnt getting up and it was freaking the girl out. Tears threatened to spill from her puppy blue eyes down her tawny cheeks. Then as suddenly as he went limp Niko sprung back to life, scaring the bejeebers out of her. She screamed as he flailed himself towards her. She scrambled backwards with no such luck. Her brother got just what he wanted and planted his behind right on her. Laying on her side Vasi was unable to squirm her way out from under him. "Nikoooo" she wailed still trying to get him off. This wasnt fun, not when she was the one on the bottom.
