RE:Saros, you become lost in a thick pre-dawn fog || @Namir

His morning walks were a normal thing by now. Usually, he was up before or with the sun and today it was the previous. Like usually he had given a soft woof to Little Crow before he took off. He was getting real antsy hanging around so close to the Rye Fields but he knew his partner wasn't stupid. Hell, if she was they'd both likely be dead right now. Luckily they were slowly making their way east it seemed. He didn't really like heading this way but it wasn't always his call. East was where that fat pack wolf had been. With his high and mighty personality and underlying meanings to his words (maybe Big Buzzard was looking too hard into it but oh).

Lost in thought he quickly looked around to make sure he hadn't gone too far. But he couldn't see anything around him. The fog had swallowed him whole it seemed. When he looked down at the ground below all he could see and feel was damp earth. At least he hadn't wandered into the wild rye pack's territory.

"Ah, shit." He huffed. This was bad. Real real bad. Little Crow likely wasn't gonna be happy with this either, Buzzard guessed.

Little Crow

Big Buzzard was useful for a lot of things, but the little lone wolf was starting to wonder if her traveling companion was cursed. Not like, his luck or anything -- if that were the case, he probably would have fallen in the river or gotten them caught during their first raid together – but it kinda seemed like whenever he was around, the weather got worse. Or maybe she only noticed it because him complained.

Either way, one minute, he was nearby, doing his morning patrol, and the next, a thick pre-morning brume had rolled in – from the lake, the forest? – and cloaked the larger loner in obscurity.

Little Crow squinted her golden eyes into the swirling mass of cloud, cheeks ballooning out to the sides as she tried to locate her companion. Calling out was an option, but not a very good one if she didn’t want to alert anyone else. Who knew what other loners lurked nearby? Her ears strained forward, detecting the older wolf’s voice in the distance (though she couldn’t make out what he was saying, knowing Buzzard, she had to guess it was some cussing), and gave a soft chuff.

“Y’idiot,” she hissed, voice little more than a whisper. “Where’d ya go?”

He could hear Little Crow's voice in the distance and while she didn't sound outright pissed she certainly didn't sound pleased. He had heard her happy, or so he thought, and this certainly wasn't a happy voice. "Ahhh. Over here. By the shore, if ya can even see it." Green eyes looked down at the water that reached for his toes and the damp earth below. He wasn't even sure how he had gotten here so he would be of no help leading his friend towards him.

This was feeling like a child's game really. Some giant game of Marco Polo lost in the fog. Except he was not having any fun with this stupid game. "Ya know what?" He called out and gave a pregnant pause in case Little Crow would answer. "Screw this weather. It won't go away no matter where the hell I go." Maybe if he hadn't dubbed the ghost's back home fake he would have blamed this all on them. In fact, Buzzard still wanted to blame this on them. He wanted to blame it on anyone but himself really. He would have tacked the blame on Little Crow but two things.

1.) She was real nice to him despite his generally not homey presence.
2.) This fog had been a damn problem before she even came into the picture.

He rolled his bright eyes as his starred forehead crinkled with distaste at this whole situation. Stupid weather.

Little Crow

So much for keeping things hush-hush, huh? Where Little Crow had kept her voice low, only hoping for it to travel to her partner’s ears, Big Buzzard answered like the booming beast he was. Her tail lashed behind her, cutting through the fog like a hot knight through butter…but just like that melted dairy fat, it came rolling back in a moment later, erasing whatever swath she had cut. She was blind in the low-slung clouds. But she was not deaf.

So she listened, for Buzzard’s heavy breathing and for the squelch of giant paws in wet mud and for the gently lapping of water against the shore. She’d have to work on her companion, but. That would come later.

She did find the other loner rather quickly, brushing up against him from haunches to shoulder as she stopped with paws in the water, leaning down for a drink. It wasn’t preferable, drinking out of standing water, but it didn’t smell too bad, and her options were limited unless they wanted to near the river staked out by a wolf pack. A drink of water wasn’t worth the potential trouble.

But she had other ideas.

“So, Buzzard. Buzz. Buzzy. Y’gettin’ hungry yet?”

It was lucky for him that Little Crow had a good set of brains because with his kind of luck he would have gotten lost if the roles were reversed. His tail swayed behind him as she brushed against his side before stopping to lap at the water. Big Buzzard certainly was lucky he had decided to follow her down the Fjord down south otherwise he'd likely still be lost in the fog without much guidance.

His brow raised and his ears perked as her voice broke out. She ran over a few nicknames for him which caused his face to split with a smile. "Mmm I'm not gonna say no to a meal you know that." His lip pulled back to expose his ivory teeth in a rather goofy grin. Big Buzzard was a sucker for food but the food had been part of the deal they had struck. Granted he was hanging around for more than the meals now but that didn't make him less excited about them.

"Whatcha got in mind this time?" He asked curiously. Were Big Buzzard and Little Crow gonna play clean or dirty this time? Last time hadn't been nearly as bad as he had imagined it could have gone. Shit, they could be dead right now but thanks to his crow like friend they were alive and fed.

Little Crow

Namir looked over, watching her partner for a moment, and wiggled her nose. Smell was only useful this close, like eyes. She hadn’t noticed before, but Buzzard was starting to smell like her. Like her. The way pack wolves smelled like their alpha…or the way bitches smelled like their mates. (But her mother never had that, did she. She stunk like Orin because she belonged to Orin.) The first idea wasn’t so bad, but mates?

Eugh.

She’d have to reassess this whole touch thing. Later though. Because as suspected, Big Buzzard was interested in dinner time. (Lunch time? Meal time. It was hard to tell the time of day with the fog that seemed to cling to her friend around like flies on a kill.) “Sure do. We’re near a river, see. Dunno if that’s where this lake comes from, but it’s beside th’ point. Now the mud worked real good last time, but don’t think we’re gonna have that option with a river. But we sure can soak, ‘til we don’t smell like nothin’. Will take a long longer, yanno.”

She hummed quietly. “Would have t’be real careful ‘bout not bein’ seen, though. Other than that we’ll be all wet an’ skinny lookin’. Think y’can handle sneaky?”

This idea seemed like it was gonna take more tact than the last. He thought about it as she kept elaborating and while it seemed real shady to try and hope that wading would wear off the scent he figured that the last round was shady too. They had just caked themselves in mud and hoped for the best. They had made it out alive obviously and with a decent meal for both of them. He trusted her anyway. Well, for the most part at least.

"I can handle it. Didn't get us caught last time, did I?" Big Buzzard smirked softly but knew that he very well could have. While it had stroked his ego that he had gotten so lucky on his first time thieving a pack he also knew that beginner's luck as a bit too true some times. "I mean, I'm surely not as graceful as you but I'm not the biggest clutz around." He rolled his eyes in a joking manner as he shifted his weight, the shoreline mud squishing under his large paws. Gross but they'd be away from it soon he hoped.

His head leaned down to lap a drink from the shallow water. "The water might add weight though, won't it?" He imagined that his fur soaking up all that water to wash off the scent would leave him like an unrung sponge.

Little Crow

“Nah. Near thing though, all that huffin’ an’ puffin’. Yer so slow,” she teased, a smile in her sunshine eyes as she stepped away, enjoying the soft squish of mud underneath her toys. Her tail continued to swing lazily behind her and she sighed, licking her nose. Unfortunately, Big Buzzard had a point. She usually looked like a drown rat after she got in the water, but she shook off first. Rolled around. Which could make her smelly again, now that she thought about it.

But that was why she kept him, huh? Thinking now, running later. After they’d done all the thinking.

The dusty loner leaned forward, chewing on his shoulder idly. It was good for thought. Or something like that. It sparked an idea, so Little Crow would stick with that defense, anyways. “Could wash first,” she suggested. “An’ shake off so we ain’t heavy. An’ find somethin’ stinky t’ roll in real quick. Like shit.” Which was gross, in theory, but at least they wouldn’t give themselves away. “Deer shit is stinky…might attract ‘em other wolves, though. Or! Or one of ‘em pack wolves. Then it stinks like one of their packmates who stole from ‘em!!”

Shit, she was a fuckin’ genius.

He rolled his eyes in an over exaggerating manner. "Well shit, Little Crow just go ahead and tell me the news. I'm fat, aren't I?" A soft slip of laughter followed after. He wasn' fat, he knew that. He had been packing more weight when he was still part of a pack but it was obvious he wasn't skin and bones being a loner. Big Buzzard could easily thank his partner in crime for that. She fed him and even if it wasn't top of the line meals it was still usually meals and not scraps.

Buzzard watched as she sputtered out her ideas like a broken printer. The idea of rolling in another wolf's shit wasn't the most appealing thing ever but he supposed there were worse things to roll in. "Might as well get sprayed by a skunk." He scoffed softly as his head shook but he didn't say it with the true intent to shoot her idea down. Little Crow was real smart. She had the kind of smarts he didn't find in pack wolves. In the human world, she would have some street smarts. Lots of it actually.

"But I'll do it. If we smell like someone else claws won't be pointed at us." Simple enough but they actually had to now find the shit of someone from their next targetted pack. He wondered if this was a new low for him or if this was some kind of high point. Maybe it was such a high point he couldn't really understand it. Per usual he'd be fine with doing whatever as long as they didn't get caught and he got a meal.
