Skookum Kokanee
Skookum groaned none-too-quietly as he picked himself up off the snowy ground, working himself out of the bowl of snow he had bedded down in and shaking off the powdery snowfall that had covered him overnight as he slept. As if sleeping out in the snow, the cold, the rain or whatever else the heavens decided to throw at him in his past few months wasn't annoying enough, his shoulder ached something awful in the cold. The bare, scarred skin shrank, pinched and pulled painfully at the ligaments beneath and made the already surly wolf more irritable than usual. Winter couldn't be over with soon enough.

But it wasn't his sore joints that had pulled him from his dreamless slumber. But rather a loud and rapid knock-knock-knock that sounded out from right above him, followed by a shrill, monotonous warbling that was as pleasant as an ice pick in the ear. Skookum craned his head back, dark eyes narrowed and nose wrinkled as he regarded the offending noisemaker with extraordinary distaste: A drab little spotty bird with a red blaze of feathers on its head perched high in the tree he'd been sleeping under.

"Oh stuff it," He barked uselessly, knowing the bird would neither understand him, nor care. The flicker continued on with its incessant drumming and screeching. Skookum growled and grumbled to himself. It seemed like even out in the middle of nowhere, he couldn't get any peace and quiet.

Sorry it got a bit wordy ^^' Haven't stretched them writing muscles in a while. tag for @Jessie for mention +info

It was a strange mess of feelings, buzzing in the young lad as he moved away from his home and the familiarity of the Lowlands. He’d dreamed of adventure all his life, but never been able to slip far from the watchful eyes of the pack. But now he found himself further from the Fields than he’d ever been, yet the reasoning behind his outing put a rather heavy dampener on his excitement. He was on a trail! Or he had been, it seemed to have disappeared a little ways back, or perhaps he simply lost it, tracking was not one of his greater skills. But he kept moving regardless, hoping to pick the scent back up. He had to find her! She needed to come back home, now! Everything’s such a mess!

She was supposed to be the responsible one too. Oldest of the litter, always scoffing at him and Kas when they got rowdy. How exactly had she managed to go and get herself lost? Well it didn’t matter! He would make her unlost, and take her home to mom and dad. As soon as he found his own way out of this tangle of woods. Such a terrible mess of prickly bramble and dense thickets, it was. If all forests were like this, he was very happy to be living out in the tundra. In here, every step was a struggle, but he pressed on, doing his best to stick to the mountainside, to keep sure of his direction; Just keep heading south..! That’s what his mom had told him. Even if he lost the trail, going south until he reached the Falls and then following the river would lead him to Charred Ash Draw, where there were ‘friends’ who could help. And apparently, his older sister had once gotten lost too and ended up down here, so it seemed the best way to go.

A sudden, strange sound startled the youth, stopping him in his tracks; A rythmic knocking, interchanging with what sounded like a high pitched laugh. And then, after a few rounds of this, a gruff voice, distinctly wolf, and close enough that it made the boy jump, as he couldn’t see a thing through the overgrowth. Cursing forests for all their trees under his breath, Gale started moving slowly forward again, squeezing through another few rows of trees, before suddenly finding himself in a wide, open glen. A few leaps of snow covered the ground in front of him, before transitioning into a large lake, frozen along the edges, but seeming to be wet still in the center. And, just a short length to his right, stood a strange wolf - looking more like a bear really, than any wolf Gale had ever met - his attention seemingly fixed on something high up in a tree.

The pup followed his gaze, mouth forming a silent ‘oh’ as he caught sight of the bird; Just as it paused its knocking to give off another string of laughs. Here was the source of the ruckus then. Gale smiled slightly, amazed that a bird was able to make such a noise, though the dark wolf didn’t seem the least bit amused. “It making fun of yah?” The youth barked, cocking a brow questioningly, while his tail gave a slow wave at his hocks. Perhaps something about this guy was just too hilarious for a mockingbird to pass up.

If looks could kill, that flicker would be dead on the ground and Skookum would be busy feasting on its bony little body. But instead, the bird remained alive and well, hammering away at the tree and squawking its heart out.

Skookum snorted at the stupid question, his silver fringed face swinging in the direction of the newcomer. His dark eyes retained their rather unamused cast as he looked over the young wolf who had suddenly stumbled upon him. Skookum's whiskers dropped and his brow creased. As if an annoying bird wasn't enough, a little brat had to show up with a smirk that was just as grating as the shrill calls overhead.

Skookum sneered. "Of course it isn't." He answered as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. Sure, it might have sounded like a laugh, but the male wasn't in the mood to entertain such frivolous fantasies. Who knew, maybe the cub's parents had done a lousy job educating their spawn thus far. "That's just the sound they make, same as us howling." He responded bluntly, as if this pup was thick enough that he needed it spelled out for him.

Whatever the funny-bird was laughing at, the brute clearly didn’t see the joke. Dark eyes turning to Gale, he looked decidedly grumpy, glaring almost like the pup had taken part in the mockery. He was a true beast of a wolf, big and burly, with several scars visible in the bistre brown fur. But there were also large patches of grey along his pelt, much like his dad’s, and the kid wondered if this wolf was also getting old; Perhaps that’s why he’s so grumpy..? His dad could get a bit grouchy too, when his joints were hurting. Nevertheless, Gale found the sullen expression rather uncalled for, and even more so the snide remark.

Glancing back up towards the bird, he shrugged a tawny shoulder, smile growing slicker. “Then, how do you know?” He drawled, flicking an ear as the speckled bird started up it’s monotonous laugh yet again; “‘Could be telling all its friends how funny lookin’ you are.” He couldn’t help himself, the guy was too uptight, he deserved a little teasing. Might not be the smartest move, to taunt a stranger who was in such a foul move already, but then, the youngest Avalon was not exactly known to be all that wise in his decisions. If it came down to it though, he felt confident he could outrun this old lout.
