Dated around 1/4 - Gale is not too far from CAD borders

Pulling away from the mountains and following the curve of the creek, the boy had assumed he’d be moving into more open lands. But he was sorely mistaken, the woods going on and on, seemingly endless. The tundra pup had a hard time believing there could be this many trees anywhere! Yet here they were, towering over him, gnarly, naked branches entangled with points of dark conifer. How one was supposed to find anything among all this vegetation, he had no clue; How can someone even live here? It had to be impossible to hunt without ramming into a tree, and what was there even to hunt in all this growth?

Still, the young Avalon continued his trek faithfully, trusting his mother’s instructions. The creek still ran along beside him, wiggling in and out between the tree trunks, plotting his route forwards. Every so often he would pause to drink and give the area a thorough sniff, searching for signs of wolf. So far he hadn’t found anything familiar, and nothing hinting at a nearby pack, but he kept at it, hoping to stumble across a clue to his search. Most of all, he hoped to catch a whiff of that one scent he knew so well, just the smallest trace to prove that he was on the right track.

So focussed was he on his nose, that he didn’t notice the change in the woods around him. Only when he actually bumped, head first, into something, did his eyes lift from the ground. Frowning in pain, he raised a pale paw to rub at his forehead, squinting at the tree stump that had blocked his path so rudely. No taller than the young wolf’s shoulders, and almost fully black, it blended in with the gloom of the forest. The top looked to have splintered off long ago, but smaller pieces were still crumbling off, and when he lowered his paw, the boy was surprised to see black marks in the white fur; "Huh?"
