but if you loved me, why'd you leave me?

He was getting closer to the lake, if his memory served him correctly… he’d approached it from the East and slowly headed south until he reached the rim of the lake… it was familiar to him, but not as familiar as the southern lands or the mountains were to him. He took a deep breath, breathing in the scent of the winter that still clung to the edges of the lake. If the ice were a little more stable, then perhaps he might have tried to reach one of the islands in the center, but he did not feel so bold now.

It was funny how things could change so much, and so little at the same time. After his meeting with Aponi, and then his other meeting with his mother, it was clear that all of the wolves he once knew had changed so much, but the terrain stayed the same. The forest, he still knew like the back of his paw… the Fen too, though there were signs that someone had been there more recently than the Trail… It made him look back, wonder. The swarthy male stared out pondering at the lake, and it was like all of his worried dropped away, like the lake was absorbing the sorrow he’d felt consume him the past few months, and suddenly being there felt right.

She did not stray far from the Surge today. Her little outing was just that; a simple breather away from the bustle of the pack. With every other mature female in heat and the pack law clear, the fiery agouti woman did not want to be in the middle of such tensions. She had a hard enough time containing her own emotions around Emrys and it would do her no good to accidentally lash out at the wolves who she eventually hoped to form closer bonds with.

Getting away was the best thing for her right now. She slipped past the borders silently, but not before leaving a fresh mark of her scent to assure namely Lachesis and Emrys that her presence was still very much rooted to their riverside home for the foreseeable future. Heading southeast away from the Surge, Jynx found peace in the solitude that surrounded her. The snow covering the land was still abundant, plenty enough to send a refreshing chill through her skin when she paused to roll delightedly in the white powder. To her left was the great expanse of the lake, a particular section of which she had not yet explored. Sprawled in the snow, she bounced back upright and shook herself off. Normally she would have investigated the shoreline to examine the prospects of fishing, but the ice made that pointless. She wasn't sure what had brought her out here. Some sliver of hope of finding her children. She wasn't exactly in the mood to hunt, or track down prey. She didn't fight her thoughts, try to make sense of them. As she moved on parallel to the lake, a brown and black figure of a wolf in the distance caught her eye. She had seen many of his build and coloration before. Jynx didn't do a double take, unaware of the head on collision with the past in which she may be headed.

But if you loved me, why'd you leave me?

Karpos was marveling at the fact that he continued to run into wolves he’d known from his past… like it was just his luck that he’d run into Aponi (and sleep with her, which he almost felt guilty about as he had been able to smell the scent of her mate on her, but not quite) or Ana or Lachesis… He’d much preferred the company of the latter two. He almost believed his nose was deceiving him when he caught Jynx’s scent in the wind. It was the one wolf he’d never gotten an explanation from. She’d just abandoned him, feeling rage at him that he himself hadn’t been able to understand, and perhaps his greatest regret. “Jynx?” He called out as he approached her.

He’d followed her scent until he could see her, his head tilted to the side. It seemed unlikely he could pick her out – how many wolves had he seen with her coat? But it was this gnawing feeling in his gut that had perhaps been caused by the strangeness of the past few weeks when he’d run into all of the major figures from his past who could still be seen as alive. “Is that you..?”

As she moved onwards with easy, almost rhythmic steps, her mind began to slip. Memories slowly crept back in from the outermost edges of her mind, threatening to consume and swallow her thoughts entirely. Of her accomplishments, her failures. Of the wolves she had known and those she had lost. And of the places she had been throughout her time in the Lore. She could only wonder what the cloudy future held in store for her. She wished she could see, to know. But there was no way in seeing through that thick shroud of fog of the unknown.

A voice called to her then. Masculine and one that she hadn't heard in years. One that she never thought she'd hear again but would always recognize. A single ear pivoted in the direction of the voice, golden eyes blinking rapidly to clear her head to assure herself that she was not in fact, daydreaming. She turned, facing the dark figure now approaching her. Her brow crinkled. "Karpos?" She called tentatively, one paw raised off the ground. As he neared, she recognized the unique characteristics that made him who he was. And his scent...he still smelled like...him. She moved to meet him, but unhurriedly. The last time they had seen one another she was shooting him scathing glares. That was in the past. Now there was no hostility in her step, nor in her eyes. "I never thought I'd see you again." She said as she stopped, just enough not to breach either of their personal space. Things had changed. She changed. She was part of a pack, had loved ones to fret over. But standing with the very wolf who had welcomed her into this great wilderness, all of that was forgotten. For now.
