She had awoken early that morning and made sure to wake up @Sachiel as well. Once she was sure he was awake she began to head out with the full expectation he would follow her. If not then she would make sure to bring something back for him. The adventure itch had bit her so she headed south, trailing the mountain.

It was after most a day of wandering at the base of the mountain that she found a safe haven. The rocks cast shadows from the setting sun as the small flowing water seemed to glow with the reflection of the sky. She was struck by the beauty of the place. Her tail swayed behind her as she moved forward over the more rugged part of the fold.

She halted as she reached the smooth flowing spring. Eagerly she leaned down to lap at the cooling water. This place had everything one could ever need. If she didn't have a home she most certainly would have set up shop here.

The peppered girl tossed her head over her shoulder, wondering if her usual companion was around to see this too.

'Cause if we don't leave this town
We might never make it out

It did not surprise the agouti boy that his partner in crime had departed promptly after waking him up. If she had remained Sachiel would have likely dragged her back down to the cool ground and forced her to sleep-in a few minutes longer (and by forced he means flopping on top of her and preventing her from scrambling away from him). With a reluctant groan the tawny Selwyn dragged himself out of the communal den and followed her trail, his gangly legs working quickly to catch up.

As her trail continued south-west, toward the mountain, it did not take Sachiel long to figure out where she was going. But the boy was no stranger to the fold. He’d visited the base of the mountain a number of times without his greyscale friend, but only when the terrain was covered in snow. This time, however, spring had finally made an appearance. His word was filled with luxurious shades of green once more. His shoulders sagged in relief as he trotted further into the fold, his tail swaying gently behind him as he spotted his friend’s peppered figure in the distance.

He was a little nervous being out in the open—so exposed—with coyotes lurking about, but Sachiel knew that he and Pumpkin Eyes were a force to be reckoned with. He hoped, anyway.

Plucking a blush-coloured flower from the ground Sachiel sauntered up beside her, his mismatched gaze quickly averting her brilliant tangerine pools. He plopped the flower between her ears and planted his hindquarters on the ground, his mismatched gaze fixated on their vibrant surroundings. Mostly because he was absolutely enthralled by the array of colours, but also because he wanted to keep an eye out for pesky coyotes…

Her eyes rolled to try and look at the top of her head. She couldn't see what her partner had planted her peppered crown but that didn't matter much because at least it didn't feel like anything gross. Nothing slimy or smelly. Her tail swayed at her ankles as she leaned into his side. The silent moment of appreciation was quickly shattered by the realization of movement in the corner of her eye.

She rounded her tawny companion as a gentle whine escaped her. They were far from home and Hawthorne doubted any extra friends were lingering around like last time. I think we got company. She spoke softly as she stared at the coyote duo. At least it was just two, right? That wouldn't be so hard to deal with. Hopefully. What do ya wanna do? She asked as her orange eyes gaze stayed looking at the coyotes. While they didn't seem rabidly aggressive they also didn't seem like they planned on leaving soon.

Well, heck.

Their serene moment did not last long.

His ears twitched as his greyscale companion spoke, his previous gesture immediately discarded as he pushed himself into a stand and faced the mangy duo. Instinctively his tail arched high over his back as he took a bold step forward, his body angled ever so slightly to ensure one leg, and shoulder, was in front of his partner in crime.

He did not know if attempting to fight off the coyotes was their best course of action. Sure, they were stronger (and bigger) than the mangy creatures, but if the coyotes were desperate enough to approach wolves then they would likely put up a good fight. Especially when they didn’t appear to be interested in vacating the area. His tail twitched cautiously behind him as Hawthorne spoke up, her question suspending in the air between them. You feel like pickin’ a fight? He asked quietly, his mismatched gaze never once wavering from the coyotes’ scrawny frames. Or should we just leave 'em be? He wouldn’t be against the latter, as fighting had never been his forté. Besides, it wasn’t like the coyotes were close to the Edge territory. They would just have to make sure that the creatures didn’t follow them back to the shallows. I’m sure we could take ‘em, if y’wanted, he cheesed despite the nervous lump that had formed in the back of his throat. The coyotes were all red and orange and black; dripping with uncertainty and bad! bad! bad!

Maybe she would have felt more confident in duking it out with the coyotes if they were closer to the falls. Yet she had been foolish and led them a good way out. A call would not be heard and any major injury would not be dealt with. So she was left to consider playing the role of big and brave or maybe taking a smarter route.

Her brows furrowed as she let silence settle over the standoff. Would Sachiel think less of her if she wanted to play it safe? She had spent so much time building up an appearance as some force to be reckoned with and to throw that all away because of some coyotes felt like it would severely damage that image.

I think we should leave. She admitted finally with a soft sigh. If one of us gets injured by some mangy coyote carrying who knows what possible sickness, I don't want it to be this far from home. It was a swift hit to her pride to say it but she knew it was smart. If they had fought coyotes alone unscathed then surely Askan or Reyes would have made sure they learned a lesson from being foolish alone.

She only wished she could do more than plan an escape route.

Truthfully the agouti boy was rather relieved to hear that his greyscale partner didn’t want to fight off the coyotes. Their age had them at a disadvantage against the coyotes, even if they were bigger (in both height and brawn) than the mangy creatures. They seemed desperate, otherwise they wouldn’t be lurking around the Edge territory, which made the boy even more wary. Plus, he’d be too busy fretting over his friend to fend of the coyotes properly, as she was always his first priority—along with the pack, but he couldn’t decide who was more important to him.

He held his ground as his friend deliberated their options, the top of his tawny maw wrinkled. Her words had not surprised him; he almost let out a sigh of relief when she announced that they should leave. Sachiel nodded softly in response as he kept his gangly body tense, his mismatched gaze never once wavering from the tawny duo in front of the. Works for me, he added in agreement as he took a tentative step back, his posture growing more relaxed; almost submissive. To show the coyotes that they weren’t a threat and that they would vacate the area without a fuss. Better let 'em know that they’re down here, too. We heard a group of them howlin’ near the borders a few weeks ago.

But the boy didn’t want to lead them back to the shallows—Reyes and Askan wouldn’t be happy about that. Maybe we should take the long way back, he suggested, his voice hushed as he continued stepping back. He hoped she’d catch his drift without him having to explain himself. He didn’t know if the coyotes were smart enough to understand them.

She stuck terribly close to his side, almost convinced she'd actually be in his skin if she got any closer. If the topic was confronted, she'd say it was for defense and that they looked bigger together - not the fact that she was kind of scared for once. The Selwyn wouldn't have felt so bad if they had the numbers or if there weren't so many coyotes all over the place at the moment. She hoped they evacuated the lore soon because she was slowly going bonkers.

Yeah. She agreed almost breathless. South and loop through the forests. Her tones hushed for his ears only. I'm sure they'll understand if we're a bit late. They being anyone who questioned them. Granted she had every intention of informing the Edge leaders about the coyotes' presence. That this wasn't an issue that existed only just in the falls. The Selwyn wasn't sure if that was relieving or even worse. Probably the latter.

Her orange eyes watched carefully, making sure that the mangy duo was content to leave them alone.

Being scared wasn’t a phrase that was common in the duo’s vocabulary. They were generally fearless—for the most part—and had learned to confront the unknown. But they were also smarter than they looked, which meant that they knew when to back off when necessary. This as one of those times, as Sachiel wasn’t interested in becoming an evening snack for the coyotes or collecting some nasty infection from their rotten mouths. It was quite alarming, though, to feel the fear radiating off his comrade. It was a foreign concept to the tawny youth, as she was typically the braver one out of the two. He nudged her shoulder with his own as he mentally mapped out her instructions—a clear visual illuminating his thoughts as he recalled the photographs in the back of his mind. South, along the base of the mountain, before cutting east through the southern woods of Red Fern. There were plenty of creeks and rivers to mask their scents along the way. Maybe even some mud piles to roll around in just in case.

There was no other option—aside from heading north and attempting to skirt past the coyotes. And potentially lead them back to the Edge? Askan and Reyes would skin them alive if the coyotes didn’t beat them to it. Sounds good to me, he hummed into her ear as he stepped to the side, his paws retreating from the fold as he kept his body poised in front of hers. The coyotes kept their amber gaze on the duo, their dark lips pulling away to expose rows of stained ivory fangs. Just keep moving, he thought hastily to himself as he struggled to steady his breathing, his bicoloured gaze never once wavering from their scrawny frames. One of them raised their tail with a deep growl accenting their stiff posture. A clear sign for the dynamic duo to vacate the area as quickly as possible. Follow the creek, he whispered once more as he kept moving further from the coyotes, his mismatched gaze still focused on their tawny figures, then we’ll break off for the glen.
