RE: Winter makes a comeback! A cold snap drops a dusting of snow across Relic Lore, killing early spring flowers.

Kieron, after having taken a short rest after being escorted over the borders of Shallows Edge, was busy preparing for her night vigil. She had taken care of her immediate needs - emptied her bladder, filled her stomach (on some old bones she had unearthed near the lake), taken a dip in the shallows to wake herself up further and wash the sleep from her eyes - and was presently taking inventory. Here and there along the borders, she counted the scents of those potentially nearby. Including the two men in charge, she had taken notice of a handful of yearlings, a female or two, and no cubs.

How peculiar.

A thoughtful smile laced its way onto her masked face, ultimately relieved to be spared cub-watching duties. She had done quite a bit of that in her days leading up to her departure from her homelands, and younglings were not particularly her favorite. While she had suspected that she might only have a heart for those born of her own bloodline, she found she couldn't decide upon that for sure. She liked her work and very much preferred she put her responsibilities first.

After a good stroll and a good stretch, she glanced up to the sky, only slightly aware of the chill through her thinned summer coat. It might have been cool out tonight, but it certainly was too cold for the flowers that had only just blossomed in the wake of summer. The light wash of pinks and oranges in the clouds that had gathered was long gone and the skies were turning from light blue to dark blue at a steady rate. It would be dark - and time to get to work - before she knew it.

He had not been getting much sleep since his recent extracurricular activities. The tawny boy kept himself busy by hunting within the borders (most of the time) and patrolling along the edge of the territory. Although he had been careful to mask his scent after fleeing the second group of coyotes Sachiel still feared they had somehow found their way back to the shallows. The last thing he needed was for a bunch of mangey mutts to come sniffing around the Edge borders. Not after he had just been praised for his good work.

Maybe part of him was hoping he’d stumble across a familiar mud-dusted loner, but the agouti yearling didn’t hold his breath. If she appeared, gift in tow, Sachiel would consider her a trustworthy comrade, but for now she was nothing but a reckless loner. Beating to the sound of her own drum and jumping in every mud puddle she came in contact with. He didn’t expect her to show up, but he wouldn’t be disappointed if she did.

However, there was a new scent among the shallows that pulled the boy away from his thoughts and caused him to redirect his patrol. She was older than the majority of the back but younger than the Edge Lords—a happy medium. The fresh blood was good, especially since the grumpy blue-eyed yearling and his pesky shadow had disappeared. Good riddance—the Shallows didn’t need them. They needed loyal, hard-working wolves; hopefully this older stranger fit the description.

He maintained his distance as he spotted the darker wolf among the trees. A soft frown tugged at his dark features as he tried to read her colours, but they were all jumbled. Ashy greys, deep shades of emerald and jade, soft wisps of sapphire and ruby. He took careful strides closer, his dark-tipped tail swaying softly behind him as he woofed a low greeting.

Her ears had caught onto the low woof of another and had swiveled in his direction before he faced the him fully. The youth before her was tawny, with a perhaps average build. Perfect Day Sentry material. He would have blended in with the cedars in her homelands and made a good apprentice. As it was, however, they were not within Blackroot Basin and this boy was her Leaders' charge.

She gave him a wave of her tail, peering into the similar mask that adorned his face and taking note of his bi-colored eyes in the gathering dark. "Hello," she purred at him, a slight smile on her snout. "And, who do we have here?"

She seemed different than the rest of the Edgy brood; a different type of edginess. Softer, more refined, but it was definitely there, hidden within pools of rich jade. Her tone matched her appearance, silky words tumbling off her tongue one by one. His chin canted to one side as he studied her, his lips pinched tight before he decided to introduce himself instead of clucking back with a snarky response. Sachiel Selwyn. He wore his new surname proudly, like a badge. He still clung to the name Leigh, tacking it on like a middle name, but he did not know if he identified with it anymore. The name was blue-orange; good and bad. Although he and his father had a strange, unconventional relationship, Sachiel was still proud to be his son and cherished the time he spent with Draven. But it also reminded him of the Vale; of his mother. Memories that he tried to turn to black.

And who are you?

She could feel the cool night chill bite into her pelt; she would have to get moving soon. As soon as she could get her limbs moving, the cold wouldn't have a chance to get to her, she was sure. She regarded the boy with a more apparent smile, one that was more genial, more cordial than before.

"Hmm," she hummed, amused as she put to memory both his face and name. There a was a moment when her eyes narrowed, her eyes raking over the whole of him, scanning every characteristic part of him. There was another flick of her tail, "Quite a handsome name for a handsome youngling." It was a compliment, something she didn't generally give out for free, but she knew from experience just how important it was to confide in the pack's up-and-coming members.

"I'm Kieron," her paw lifted and she stepped to one side, "Care to join me for a quick round about the territory?"

His paws shuffled uncomfortably beneath her compliment, his mismatched gaze quickly avoiding her pools of jade. Handsome? Him? The oncoming darkness must have been playing tricks on the older female. He disregarded her words as soon as they had settled in the space between them, his tail flicking idly behind him as he waited for her to introduce herself. Kieron. He nodded, mostly to himself, as he paired the name with her peculiar markings. It would not be a name, or a face, that would forget—and not just because it was impossible for him to forget anything.

I suppose so, he hummed in agreement as he took a step forward, his shoulders rolling softly to show his indifference. When did you get here? He asked, nearly wincing at his feeble attempt at small talk as he sidled up beside her.

"I suppose so," the boy had countered. Her smile reached upward towards the triangle markings beneath her eyes; she rather liked that he was humble. Egos and vanity usually only got in the way when it came to establishing relationships. She saw him move forward, falling into step, and she took that as a cue to start walking.

Pleased with his decision to come along, she began to lead him out towards the borders, out along the pathways and places where both Askan and Reyes had been perhaps only a few days before. She almost expected him to remain quiet, wanting her to carry the conversation until he piped up, "When did you get here?"

Kieron had to think. She had been in contact with Askan for some time but had not fully aligned herself or even called herself a Shallows Edge wolf until, perhaps, only recently. "Sometime ago," she stole another glance at him, this time taking in the side of his own masked face. "Haven't been here too long but just long enough to know how it all works 'round here."

Her path curved around a broken tree and she focused on the old scent trail ahead. "And yourself?" she asked in turn. "Were you born here? Or did you come from someplace far off, too?"

Sachiel wasn’t usually so… bashful. Instead he was usually the opposite. Charming, outspoken and maybe a little too sarcastic (on occasion). Feisty was another accurate description for the boy, but that was a word better suited for his peppered sidekick. But he had been taken aback by the emerald-eyed wolf and kept his tongue slack between his teeth. He fell into step with her readily, his black-tipped tail swaying absently behind him as he waited for her response to his question. His gaze was kept forward, flitting over the Edge territory as he tried to keep his mismatched pools from falling onto her. Sometime ago, she had started, her voice soft as it cut through the summer air. He nodded quickly in response to her statement, his ears twitching as he digested the words. She was still a fresh Edge wolf but it appeared that she fit in well, otherwise Askan (and/or Reyes) wouldn’t have allowed her to join their ranks. The grumpy duo were quite particular about the wolves they welcomed into their pack.

He shook his head, first, in response to her question. I was born in a forest south of the shallows. With all the orange trees. An’ now I’m here. Where everything was rich shades of jade and sapphire. Home.
