a dream within a dream

Fishing huh? Seemed like a weird place to fish. She squinted her eyes at the water unsurely, trying to find some familiarity in the idea. Sure, there were tons of fish around, but how dangerous. It didn’t take long before her memory filled in the gaps, the previous conversation playing in her mind. “Oh!” She wagged her tail, the tension in her shoulders dropping. “Fishing. Right.” The fear left her tone, but she was short, still grasping at mental straws. It made more sense now, but she still couldn’t remember physically moving to the edge of the log. Oh well, she thought dryly. It wasn’t in her nature to get worked up about it.

Instead, she flashed her two pack mates a reassuring grin. She would have happily returned to the task if Askan’s words beckoned her back. She was a submissive old lady, she trusted that Askan knew what was best. Turning slowly, her paws gently moved her back towards land. Guilt radiated from her body, head lowered shamefully. Once she reached the dirt, she kept her eyes low to the ground and offered a sad whine. She didn’t vocalize her feelings. Instead, she reached her wet droopy nose out towards Askan to touch his pelt. While the intention was good, the winter had made it a leaking ice cube- something she hadn’t considered.

Thankfully Askan had noticed as well and they both waited by the log wanting her to come back. Remi didn't like how she remained there, staring at the water. She was concerned she might fall in. Though on purpose or accidentally she couldn't decide. Momentarily, a sideways look was thrown at Askan. Anxiety wanting to override patience. But all at once Lae seemed to recall and had the audacity to grin at them. If it was all okay now. Remi didn't feel relief. In two more seconds she might forget again. Still she remained with her own smile plastered to her face, glad to see Askan's words  were enough to get Lae to come back any way. It was obvious the closer she came how she felt bad about the whole matter. Letting them down.  When she finally reached land Remi's face was suddenly vacant. Half of her wanted to chew her ass out, and another thought that was too harsh while a third believed it wasn't her place. Besides she seemed to be asking forgiveness from Askan. A sight Remi couldn't take her eyes off of despite feeling like she ought to go back to fishing.
