It still wasn't his intention to join a pack but to the east he went. He might as well get the lay of the land over here. See if he ran into any worth running into. Despite not seeing a black river it didn't mean there wasn't one to be found this way. There was sure a lot ground, and this place was more wooded then the west. With a full belly, he trotted lazily, drifting through the woods without aim. Just stopping when he came across an old trail wondering what the wolf who made it looked like. Trying to decide if it was similar to a different path. Today he didn't bother chasing after any prey. He could wait a few days to fret about that matter.  When he was truly hungry again. Besides he wasn't sure he wanted to get caught on hunting grounds despite the lack of signs. He had no pack to back him up. His lack ears flattened, and he laughed to himself. At himself. He was fine on his own.

Away from the mountain he soon found a strange sight. A bunch of great trees toppled over. A sight that made him wary. What had done that? Was this cursed ground? Stretching his nose he tested the air, cautiously creeping forward to the closet large timber. "Huh," he muttered, stretching out to put his front limbs on the dead tree. With some calculation he clamored on top of it, a suspicious gaze staring over the rest.

a dream within a dream

The old girl had not left pack territory in days. She never wandered far from the main den, usually sleeping around the entrance. There was no reason for her to leave. The food was here, the warmth and company.  She did not feel a desire to travel. Against her own desires, she knew she needed to move to keep her legs active. Laying around would only make her aching bones worse, she needed exercise. If she had been thinking she would have asked for someone to join her, for added protection. Surely one of the woman would have been willing to take her on a walk? She may have asked Askan if he had been around- she enjoyed his company. His shortness was nearly completely lost on the senile lady, she wouldn’t have caught on to his disinterest even if he had spat in her face. No one had been around when she had decided to walk though, so she didn’t second-guess or consider calling for them. It was just the way things were.

She would not go too far. She didn’t have the energy to travel farther than a few hours, at most. She had crossed the border slowly, aimless, not considering the danger she may put herself in. She didn’t consider that her disappearance would worry anyone. She was thoughtless in her elderly years, simply moving just because her brain registered she needed to. The cold air was helping revive her. She thrived in the winter, her thin unclean white fur puffing out in the breeze. It was relaxing. She moved much slower than the expected wolf, taking her sweet time. Occasionally she would stop, sniff a rock or twig. Once or twice she picked up a stick, carried it for quite a while then dropped it when her mouth was sore. There was no motivation for this stroll. She was not hunting, scouting or even trying to map out the land around pack territory. It didn’t matter to her.

What mattered to her were the small things. The small yellow flower she had stomped across twenty minutes ago, the red bird she had watched flutter over her head and into a tree. Her paws were beginning to get sore, so she took a short break. It was time for her to head back to the main den, she was as far as she wanted to go. That was when she heard the man’s grunt in the distance, causing her to flinch. She could not see him. “Who’s there?” She called, her ears flattening against her head.

Upon the log he debated about waltzing over the others. Seeing if he could really balance. He didn't manage to make a single move. Someone must have heard him. He remained still for a moment, searching with his nose, and ears. He didn't think anyone lived around here, but it wouldn't be the first time he'd been wrong.

"Name's Summit," he answered. Leaping from his perch he drifted in her direction. It was an elderly woman, but it took him a moment to spot her white coat among the brush. Once he did his eyes settled upon her, they roved over her figure. She had a startling appearance with the scars and a single white eye. If he'd been a child he would have feared her. Believing she wasn't in her true form and was going to punish him for one thing or another. But he tried to shake from those beliefs. She was quite small, looking like she could use something to eat. He didn't see any real threat. Keeping his stance neutral, he still kept some distance from her. It was clear by the curiosity in his eyes he didn't mean harm either.

"You are?" He asked in turn. He didn't doubt she belonged to a pack, as his nose had told him. He just wondered for how long. Surely they fed her. Or did her body just not hold on to anything?

OOC: sorry for the wait I am bad

a dream within a dream

She was skeptical. As an old, vulnerable woman she had to be for safety. In her youth, she was reckless and friendly. Even now, her tail wagged slightly and a smile played upon her features. She was still a friendly girl. She was just a little nervous too. This man was certainly large enough to harm her. Even though his tone was neutral and inviting, she didn’t dare move herself closer. She didn’t bump into strangers very often, she sort of forgot how to go about introductions. It took her a moment to collect her thoughts. “Hello, Summit.”

She took a seat, clearly needing the break. Her butt hit the ground and her muscles relaxed, clearly warming up to his company. She had walked more than she had been planning on, and she could feel it. Her legs ached in a familiar way. The trip back to territory would not be as pleasurable as the trip here- that was certain. If she had been more daring, she would have rested here, outside territory- but that was dangerous. She would have to wait. As soon as she got back to the main den she’d sleep, probably for quite a few hours. She needed the rest. "I’m Lae,” she introduced, the name sounding soft on her tongue. “From Shallow’s Edge.” She sniffed the air, trying to identify the man’s pack but came up short. Her nose wasn’t the best. “Are you from around here?”

That's all right.

It was nice to see she was attempting to be friendly in turn. Though that would be the better hand to play in her situation, and he wondered if she could hold it. Or if she was simply just an easy going one no matter where she found herself. He kinda wanted to test the theory. Boredom was not good for him. Whatever it was she didn't come any further, but sat down.

"Don't happen to live near a mountain do you?" Edge made him hopeful. It wasn't like they weren't too far from it so she could have come that way. But the scents on her coat could only say so much. "Nah. Lived on the other side of the mountain a bit. Then down south for that. Now just kinda wandering." No need to hide the truth. He didn't mind a friendly chat. "What about you? Been part of the Edge long?" He could have added on more questions but had a feeling it would be better to throw one at a time.

OOC: I promise to be better at these replies now

a dream within a dream

Time was a fickle thing to the elderly woman. It was hard to remember what was recent and what was old in her memory. It felt like yesterday we was a young lady still, flirting with the male pack mates and sauntering around. That’s why she didn’t reply right away. How long had she been with Shallow’s Edge? The nights blurred together. She hemmed and hawed in consideration before giving her lack lustre response: “Awhile- I think.”

“Before the weather got cold.” She lifted a paw to her mouth and groomed between her toes, chewing the nails with growing ferocity. They tasted like dirt. She spat out a single clump of mud and grinned. “I don’t know much about this area. I’m a bit old to travel.” She said the last few words quietly, as if her age was a big secret she was indulging him in. Then, she dropped the paw to the ground and lifted the other one, raised it to her mouth then seemed to think better of it. She hated the taste of dirt. Who did she have to impress anyway with clean feet? “If you’d like, you can follow me and ask my packmates.”

The invite was soft politeness on her hand, not something she seemed passionate about. Helping was important to her, but not so important that she would pressure him. It probably wouldn’t please Askan too much, but she doubted he would express his frustration with her. Who would yell at a little old lady? Maybe he would, but it would be useless. She’d feel sad for a day or so, then forget. It was in her nature. “If you don’t mind me asking, where are you from?”

@Lae what the heck is life

She didn't try to hide the fact she wasn't certain when she answered and he smiled giving an "Ah," in turn. There was little chance she could supply him with a lot of information of these lands. A little disappointing but what else did he have to do? Nothing. He'd keep wandering and seeing for himself. But he had to hold back a smirk as without care of judgement she cleaned her toes right in front of him, grinning when she finished. She reminded him a bit of his own grandmother though he wasn't sure why. His grandma would never have done that.

"What makes you say that?" He muttered, the lines between his eyes drawn together, but there was a twist to his lip. A twinkle of curiosity in his blue eyes. She was out here, and had lived most her life else where he'd wager. Did she have a hip problem? Or she was one of those elders the cold bothered?

Her kind offer was tempting to take but he still wasn't sure what he was looking for. He wasn't sure her dragging him back would be the way he wanted to meet her pack. Especially if she had a habit of doing it. "That's nice of you maybe another time. Where is it you stay?" He'd make a mental note to check in some other time, especially if the journey proved irksome. He was sure he'd cave against the loner life.

An ear briefly twitched back when she spoke once more, but he stopped his feet from shuffling around. No one had heard of his home and he didn't have anything to hide."Dunraven Pass. It's in a territory some call Wyoming. Ever been?"

a dream within a dream

Lae couldn't say she had, but who knew. She struggled to remember a lot of her past. Even though it didn't seem familiar, there was still a chance that her mind had lost it among the wreckage. There was a ton of things she had forgotten. She knew she had children, but wasn't sure how many. Possibly eight? That number seemed reasonable, but the elder wouldn't bet on it. Rather than give a definite answer, she contoured her face in a strange half grimace half mindless stare. Then, she opened her mouth and grunted: "'aybe."

"'aybe not." She straightened up and offered a pleasant and polite smile. "I am from Shallow's Edge." The words were so confident and clear, almost like she had rehearsed them. Admittedly, it was one of the few things she had trained herself to remember- just like her name. These were things she was proud of. "It is not far from her. I like it." She meant it, she loved her home. Her pack mates were her family. Her heart burned like a fire for them, something she would die for. "We are a small family, very untraditional-" a knowing smirk played upon her features. "It's a good home, especially for a wolf like me."

She leaned her head towards him as if to whisper a secret. It was a strange thing to see, the crazy woman keeping her voice down. No one was around, there was no need- but still. "Can you keep a secret?"
