Gone Tomorrow

The three cubs never left her watchful gaze, even though they had run off in three different directions to greet the wolves of the pack. Those whom she trusted were encouraged to come closer to the inner circle to great the leaders' young, while she was pleased to see that those who had yet to prove themselves remained further back. That was enough to help settle Corinna's nerves some, but as the minutes dragged by, her fleeting looks towards Indru became more and more obvious. The morning was dragging on, and her own weariness that accompanied the process of giving birth had not yet faded. She had adopted a habit of sleeping throughout much of her day, and even this short excursion was wearing her down. Hoisting herself up from her haunches where she had settled to rest, Corinna whined in the direction of her three newborns. "Let's go, loves. They will all be here tomorrow for you to play with. But it's time for a nap now," she cooed at the three, tail wagging invitingly. She could see the disappointment in their young faces, but the three bid goodbye to their respective new friends and wandered over, slipping in and out of Corinna's legs.

Lowering her gray head, Corinna pushed Torrel's rump, urging him towards the den. With a whine, he moved, but he could not escape the will of his mother. One by one, the new arrivals slipped back into the den, though she could see three pairs of baby blue eyes peering out of the darkness. Whipping around, she spared a nudge to Indru's cheek before dipping her head at the rest of the pack, in thanks at their participation in this landmark event in her family's lives. Then like the young ones before her, the mother too slipped into the den, pushing the curious eyes away from the entrance and into a heap where they would eventually fall asleep, worn out from the day's activities.
