Friendly hospitality - Inna - Feb 06, 2017 @Askan, takes place immediately after this thread
[dohtml] So far she'd learned quite a bit and she had some things that she needed to speak to Lachesis about. Askan had been rather informative which she did appreciate and hoped that what he had told her could help Hearthwood. While there was a lot to be considered she wasn't planning on talking to Lachesis until later. In the meantime the scent of rabbit had reached her which presented a nice opportunity for a little cooperation between them. While she was curious to learn more about her visitor she felt standing there interrogating each other could be continued on another day. The offer of a hunt and to fill his belly before heading off had been made. Inna was sure that he had to be at least somewhat hungry after his travel across the lowlands. Since she didn't have the authority to invite him in for a meal and a rest before he headed off she could at least hunt with the man. RE: Friendly hospitality - Askan - Feb 07, 2017 [dohtml] "Sounds good to me. I've never really hunted in woods like these before." He glanced about, his eyes taking in the view of the tightly packed sequoia trees. These woods seemed rather cramped to him, how were they supposed to run at full burst in a place like this? How didn't they crash into the trees? Did they have a secret technique? Either way, Askan knew that he'd probably smack right into a trunk if he tried. The Selwyn wasn't going to bring that up, no no no. He had to pretend that everything was cool, that he knew what he was doing and was perfectly comfortable with hunting in -to him at least- such squished conditions. He merely assured himself that it had to be possible, otherwise Inna wouldn't have suggested it. Knowing that made this situation a little easier to stomach. "Lead the way." Askan told her, gesturing with his snout. She knew the area a whole lot better than he did, so it made sense for him to default to her leadership. She was younger than him and probably not as experienced, so it didn't exactly feel right to let her take the lead but he supposed in this sort of situation it was the best thing to do. It showed that he was reasonable, that he was willing to cooperate and work as part of a team. Which he was, despite his often crass and grouchy demeanour. It just took a bit of encouragement is all, and in this situation a rumbling stomach was more than able to do that. "What sort of game is there about here?" He asked as he followed her lead, ploughing through the knee deep snow. "I'm guessing nothing too big lives here, they wouldn't fit." He had a hard time imaging a bison squeezing through the gaps in the trees, or a massive herd of elk trotting through these woods to reach a river. That said, he was sure this forest was full of life, they simply had to look in the right places and hope for the best. RE: Friendly hospitality - Inna - Feb 07, 2017 Hunting post 1/3

[dohtml]Following suit, Askan pressed his nose to the ground. It was cold and he huffed in discomfort but as usual he merely ignored it as best as he could. Just as Inna had said, the scent of rabbit lingered, like low lying fog just drifting just above the ground. To further add credence to her words, tiny little paw prints dappled the snow, weaving in a zig-zag line that led away from the Hearthwood border and its potent markers. If they wanted to fill their stomachs, these rabbits would have to do. The scent, whilst reasonably fresh and clear, suggested that they were tracking a lone rabbit, as it ambled through the woods. But Askan wasn't concerned, after all where there was one rabbit there tended to be quite a lot more nearby. They just had to look. Tracking through the snow, Askan pulled up his head to listen to the River wolf's words. Rabbits and squirrels eh? Not the most appetising of meals, but he supposed in the tail end of winter beggars couldn't be choosers. They simply had to make do with what was around. And the same went for Askan the other Rye wolves, prey was not in abundance in the Lowlands so they ate whatever was at hand, or paw. Fish though, he wasn't so fond of fish. But they did make a good meal, even if they were a pain in the arse to get. "I reckon so." He agreed, knowing that they were getting closer and closer to their quarry. "Think there is a warren round here? A whole bunch of rabbits just waiting to be caught?"His stomach rumbled at the thought. Weaving through the trees, the duo hurried along but at the same time took care not to kick up too much of a fuss, lest the rabbit caught wind of their plan. Then again they weren't the smartest of creatures, they were easy to fool. They had to be if a fox could catch them unaware. "So how you want to do this?" He asked, his voice quiet and low. "I don't really feel like doing a lot of running." He could, he was sure of that, but he didn't exactly want to. Not if he could help it anyway. RE: Friendly hospitality - Askan - Feb 13, 2017 hunting post 2/3 , I'm feeling a lil whoozy, so lemme know if this post doesn't make sense XD
[dohtml]"Mostly bigger game you find on the tundra. Fill the caches with smaller prey and eat big when we can." He explained with ease as he trudged along. These River wolves weren't so far from the tundra either, so he was sure that they were familiar with tackling larger prey when the chance arouse. It was simply that with the snows as deep as it was travelling that far was probably of a hassle then they felt like dealing with. Really, the Rye wolves were fortunate they had the chance to hunt as they did. By no means was prey abundant this time of year, in fact there was a marked decline, but so far they were lucky. Askan had managed to come across and scavenge from a large carcass or two, and from what he could tell none of the Rye wolves were going hungry. He planned on keeping it that way if he could. Inna truly had a smart head screwed onto her shoulders. She'd make a good hunter yet, or so the Yukon thought. It was always good to plan again, to try and analyse the situation and put together a plan before it was too late to do anything about it. "Agreed." Askan murmured, as he followed suit and hunkered down, staying as still as he could so that he was out of sight. The hunt was on, the plan put together, it was simply a matter of getting it done. Nodding at Inna's suggestion. He'd take the entrance and Inna would cut them off from behind. They were as good as dead. Slinking along as quietly as he could muster, Askan crept closer and closer, his belly pressed to the ground. He was no cougar or lynx, he was never going to stalk and kill prey like this all the time, but for a situation like this he could at least give it hand, or a paw. It was tough, with all the snow coating the ground, but with determination and a well placed paw, Askan inched closer and closer. He cast a quick look Inna's way to see if she was also getting in position and nodded when their eyes met. The rabbits were still none the wiser. Just a little closer... RE: Friendly hospitality - Askan - Feb 19, 2017 sorry for the delay, i dropped the ball 3/3
[dohtml]Bracing himself, Askan rolled his shoulders as he heard the little thumping of paws upon snow. Multiple rabbits, three maybe two, heading his way in a panic. Inna had sent them running them and just as they'd discussed it was his time to play his part. If he timed this right, he wouldn't have to run, he'd just have to snatch them up. But if he buggered this up then he'd have to leg it whether he wanted to or not. Either that or go hungry. He'd take the former any time. The rabbits rushed into view, running as fast as their little legs would allow, then they saw Askan poised, lying in wait and tried to scramble to a stop, to launch themselves in another direction. But it was too late. Askan rushed forward, his jaws clamping down upon the first little rabbits head with a sickening crack. Tossing it to the side, he rushed forward again and swung a paw forward, smacking the legs out from underneath another fleeing rabbit. It hit the snow with a squeak and before it could stand he pressed a paw to its side, pinning it down. The little beast squirmed beneath his hold and rather than prolonging its misery Askan bent down and with a swift bite broke its neck. There, two out of three. That wasn't bad right? The other had gotten away but trying to catch three at once was always going to be a stroke of good luck. Eyeing the blood melting the snow, Askan barked, signalling Inna to come on over. The way he saw it, this was a joint success. She could have one rabbit and Askan could have- ah it seemed as though she'd caught one of her own. Hmm, well that threw a spanner in his plan. Not that he couldn't eat two on his own but...Picking up the spare rabbit- the one with the crushed neck- Askan dropped it Inna's feet. "Consider it a gift from a neighbour, to put in one of your caches." He had a snack of his own, keeping another for himself seemed pretty greedy in his eyes. Especially when he was trying to ensure their packs were on good terms, this was the least he could do. RE: Friendly hospitality - Inna - Feb 20, 2017 No Worries.
