Dizzy Up the Girl - Aniu - Dec 30, 2012

Whoops. Meant for this to be in Whisper Marsh. Oh well, looks like they decided to go for a proper hike <.<

It had taken all her fragile courage to approach Danton. But she needed to leave the Cedarwood and didn’t feel comfortable doing so alone after the last time. What if that crazy black woman was still lurking about out there? She was sure she would be eaten.

Although she had succeeded in her bid to rise up the ranks, and had gained great confidence in doing so, the outside world still terrified her. So many open spaces, so many predators just waiting for her to leave the safety of her home. Maybe even a few bobcats hell bent on revenge? Who knew? Her imagination ran away with her at times.

And so, meek as a mouse, she had found him, her tail hung low between her hocks, waving from side to side, her ears pinned back, unable to look him in they eye, shyness gripping her heart as she stumbled on her words. Hellebore. She needed hellebore for Follko, but she couldn’t possibly go out alone. It was a pitiful admission for the second ranked female of the pack to make. In her home she was gaining confidence, but out there?

She wasn’t sure if it was Jayse’s words when he was accepted that compelled him to come, or if he was simply grateful for a chance to stretch his legs but he was here with her none the less.

She stuck close to the much larger wolfs side, nervously bumping against him on occasion when she flinched at a branch snapping in the distance or a bird unexpectedly taking flight. It was a big scary world out here. She was more than grateful for the company.

Angier Lyall had to owe it to himself. He had done it; or rather, Danton had done it. He had gained entry into the territory guarded by the wolves of Grizzly Hollow, the mate and followers of his brother and rival Borden. He had spat in their faces and lied in front of his family, and Danton was not about ready to push his luck any further than it already had. If he, or even Jaysyek, could persuade Borden that he could stay for as long as the winter was cold, he was willing to make himself useful to buy himself time for the misdeeds he was waiting to carry out.

In the past few days he had only seen Taima, the girl he had first stumbled upon in this neck of the woods, and the few times he had seen glimpses of her, she merely continued about her business or dismissed him completely as she headed toward the boundaries of their home. He assumed her siblings were still wary of him or blissfully unaware that he was around. Now was not the time to snatch his niece away anyhow; he was certain the memory of their first meeting still stood out fresh in her mind and it would be hard to convince her to come away with him. Especially since she seemed to constantly had rebellious plans of her own. In fact, now was the time to keep his distance, to build a reputation with a pack to render himself as indispensable, a resource... An irreplaceable member. Maybe then he could draw Taima's interest.

Leading the way through the forest and out to where the open sky hung over their heads in place of crooked branches, Angier escorted the shy woman across packland borders. By request, she asked if they could gather hellebore, and so south they went. He watched her out of the corner of his eye every now and then, not at all fazed whenever she drew closer at the sound of something as unexpected as the fleeing of a lesser creature. He meant to stop and thoroughly search the edges of the Marsh but something told him that it was a waste of time; Elettra's pack might have already picked the place clean. Drawing out a sigh, he picked up the pace as they edged about the tree line near the Lagoon. He only managed to slow his steps when the scent of blossoms picked at his senses. Somewhere around here there ought to be a suitable specimen for the herbs that the woman required.

Pulling away from her for the fifth or sixth time, he padded about the clearing, his charcoal nose dragging along the ground. "I assume ya know what hellebore looks like?" he tossed out, not even bothering to look at her as he brushed the frost white covering aside with his paws to make his way through the places where the snow was thick. "Or how it smells like? Shouldn't need a lot of it lest ya wan' yer patient t' upchuck an' get sicker." He cast a glance over his shoulder, a brow raised in anticipation for her answer.

A sudden jerk at the sound of his voice and a frantic nod with her shy smile were all she could raise in response to his question. Of course she knew what hellebore looked like, or she would have simply asked for ‘the green thing that makes sick wolves better’. But she didn’t have the courage to voice such thoughts. Not yet, for although the sooty wolf was the second of Grizzly Hollow, outside of it’s borders she was still but a mouse.

She wanted to be able to talk to him. To say that extra wouldn’t hurt, but the words were stuck in her throat. It was with worry painted on her face that her nose dipped to the ground to rummage about in the snow, unearthing bits of this and that, but never the plant she was looking for.

Why was it so hard to simply go for a walk outside the borders without flinching like a fool at every crack and rattle? Why couldn’t she simply talk to this wolf, a member of her pack without tripping on her words or stuttering? But surely she could... if only she tried...

“Mm...” she looked down, focusing on the snow beneath her paws as she tried to form a coherent sentence. It wouldn’t do to go stuttering now, not after she had gone to so much trouble, and risked ruining her friendship with Sibyl to get here. Second’s didn’t stutter. Her father had never stuttered. “M-maybe we should take some extra if we find it... just in case.” Well that wasn’t so bad after all, and she had only stuttered at the start. Perhaps she could do this after all?

“Mm...” The mere sound of her voice made his eyes tear away from the clump of weeds he was about to walk away from. He glanced over to her, pursing his lips as she stared at the snow before her. “M-maybe we should take some extra if we find it... just in case.” His brows touched. "It won't keep," he shrugged. "Not for long anyway. A week at most or maybe two, if you keep it in a snow bank an' yer lucky."

He idly went back to searching, pawing at the ground and thrashing at the dense, snow-covered branches in hopes of unearthing soft white blossoms. The gruffness in his voice, he realized after taking note of her stuttering, might have been a touch too harsh. This woman was a fellow pack mate and being surly towards her would do nothing more than pushing her away, maybe even mocking her ability in their search. His teeth clamped onto a nearby bush's crooked branch and, with a couple jerk of his head, he sent most of the snow falling to the ground. Gingerly edging his nose into the shrubbery, he inhaled a couple of times before ultimately snorting.

Just to be sure, he craned his head downward and began to move some of the cold, white stuff away. One pile, two piles. He abruptly stopped and exhaled. He straightened up and looked back over to her. "You never told me yer name," he said quietly, attempting to muster up a smile as he walked over to tree near her. His eyes went back down to his feet, a mask of patience and perseverence forming on his face as he began to sweep the blanket of white awayto reveal a patch of dead grass from underneath.
