Encumbered by grief, Niles was but a shadow of his former self for now. He had been through this once before with the deaths of both of his parents, but that experience with the overwhelming sense of loss only made him slightly stronger. He had lost his mate, the one with whom he was supposed to build a family with, lead a pack with, and grow old with. Perhaps she wasn't the one (this, he constantly shook his head over whenever it came to mind, coming to him in intervals the way a tic would); he would heal that wound later, well after he had accepted that his little sprite was gone. She had
changed him; and, that was more than enough for her to have accomplished the reasons why she had been needed on this earth.
Like any other dutiful Leader, he roamed the Vale from marker to marker, letting his feet drag him wherever they wanted to go but without direction. As long as the territory was free of rogues and other mischievous critters, all was
fine - even if he wasn't.
A large ear swiveled to one side as his sister called out to him. He turned around to glance into that dark, familiar face, shoulders hunched and tail limp. He had been thinking about his next move, taking into account what was left of Quaking Vale that was his and finding that there was nothing to keep him tethered to what was once looked after by a band of friends and a cranky, old man that served as some sort of a mentor. He let out a low whine through his nose, his eyes searching her face and sides for clues as to why she had sought him out.

we can say goodbye, just head home, but if we're going to be alone
