It was certainly colder than it had been in days past, though it was hardly a challenge for creatures so bundled up in fur as themselves. Raela and her only son had struck out early with hopes of making it a fair distance from the Notch, and helping to remedy the food situation. It had also occurred to the woman, that he might appreciate not being around his sisters for a while.

What her middle child might have lacked in eyesight, he seemed to have gained in hearing and smell. The boy was a good tracker, a fact she would try to repeat to him whenever his self-esteem decided to wither. She could never believe that he didn't have worth, that he couldn't be just as valuable to the pack as someone else.

It was getting him to believe that that was the hard part. When the pair reached the fijord, now a bit tired and even more hungry, they'd discovered two trails. Reasonably confident that her growing progeny could handle being about as far away as he was normally allowed to be from any one adult, even out here, the Queen had the idea to split up and follow one track each. They needed to chase every opportunity for success now. Winter was cruel and it could not have cared less whether the Notch was suffering or not.

What helped her feel just a small bit better about their separation, was that they had stuck well away from the fijord's steep sides, and therefore from any danger of her nearsighted child toppling over a cliff edge on accident. That, and he'd been explicitly instructed to call for her if any danger was to arise. Raela put her nose to the snow, weaving a wide path past trees and boulders to slowly zone in on the scent cone of the creature she'd been charged with. It would surely take some time, but any meal was worth it now.
