Merritt "Mouse" Lyall
July 31st; Afternoon; Cloudy; 60 ° F, 16 ° C

Mama had gone out for the day, Papa was nowhere to be found and Meri had just settled down for a nap. Just what was a cub to do? Mouse scowled to himself from the tunnel opening of the old bear den. With his chin on the ground, he looked past his snout and over to his right paw, lifting it as to examine the dark brown pads underneath. He stuck his tongue out then pressed his paws to his lips, sucking on his jellybean-like digits while he thought.

Between Amaryllis and Rook, it was hard to discern which of the two would come to the den first. Mouse snorted then stood up, tail waving behind him. At ten weeks old, he was just about ready to explore the world. Just about... or, well... The boy took a daring leap forward, out beneath the gray, sunless sky. This was new...

He stuck his tongue out, cornflower and gold eyes peering into the heart of Cedarwood Forest as his nose picked up a familiar scent. "Papa," he mouthed to himself, his vocal chords producing no sound. A shiver shook him from nose to tail and suddenly he was off. Maybe - maybe! - he would find Papa first.

Mouse had not gone more than a five minutes' walk away from Amaryllis' birthing den when he realized that the forest around him was no longer recognizable. His large ears fell down to the sides and his little tail tucked. Mouse was lost!

He regarded the cedars with a fearful gaze, his voice growing as loud as it dared, "P-Papa?"
