Kyna Argyris Archer

On some level, Kyna wanted to be the one to deliver the finishing blow. Even the alpha couldn’t say exactly what inspired such a thought – but she was not going to argue with the male beta like a petty child, either. That would be foolish, and a waste of time. The important thing was that they killed the sturgeon as quickly and efficiently as possible, and then return it to one of the pack’s caches. “Yes, I think that sounds about right. And if that isn’t where the neck is…if you break the gills, it cannot breathe, and it will go fairly quickly anyways.”

Killing it instantly was her preference by a mile, but at least this would be quicker than leaving it to slowly dry to death.

With their plan set, the red wolf nodded again, wading into the pool gracefully. It wasn’t even up to her belly – it was amazing the sturgeon was still able to swim at all. The wolves would be able to pin it easily. Her tail whipped back and forth, moving as stealthily as she could. The fish kept moving away, but the pool was only so large, and soon Kyna had it backed into the shallows.

“Are you ready? I’m not sure how long I can hold it if I have to hold it alone.”

Since fishing wasn't something he did regularly he wasn't sure about where their necks were or the best way to kill them. So he wondered if he was even the right one to finish the sturgeon off or not. He supposed that he would figure it out however Kyna provided him the answer that he needed. He felt the neck of the fish if they had one would be just behind the eyes or where the skull ended. Sturgeons were a little offer shaped so he tried to see if he could tell where the end of the skull was as she spoke. She seemed agreeable to his plan of getting the fish to the cache so they had that worked out. "Gills it is I think. That way we can be sure right away and not guessing with this one then possibly making a mistake.”

The last thing he wanted and was sure she wanted was for them to make a mistake and cause more harm to the fish. If the gills were a sure thing that would end the surgeon’s suffering fairly quickly then that was what needed to be done.

Once they both understood their roles in this situation he watched as Kyna waded into the pool. She pushed it toward the shallows in an effort to keep it in one place so that he could move in. The pale man was right behind her ready to strike as soon a she had a hold of it's tail so that it wouldn't be able to slip away from them. He also felt his added presence helped to move the fish to the shallow part of the water.

“I'm ready,” he told her as he moved up to where the sturgeon's head was, “You grab it and I will deliver the blow. It will be over for him in a matter of moments.” Pyriel positioned himself and waited for her.

“Good.”

Despite their initial miscommunication, the alpha was quite pleased that she and Pyriel had developed their hunting plan so quickly. Fishing wasn’t exactly her strongest suit, either, but the opportunity was upon them. The paler wolf moved in behind her as they waded in the water, careful not to stray too far from one another and open up a gap for the sturgeon to dart through. Once the male had agreed to her plan of action, Kyna gave a short nod and began to move again. This time, her strides were much more purposeful – kicking up water certainly startled the fish, but the large animal was running out of room to swim…anywhere, really.

The Aurora alpha closed in as quickly as she could, tail held out straight behind her to counter-balance the entire effort. Her muzzle dove into the water like a harpoon, jaw opening only at the last second. Water went everywhere. In her nose, in her mouth. She’d probably swallowed some, too, but all she could think about was the brush of scales against her teeth, and Kyna chomped down as hard as she could. She’d caught some part of the tail – though she couldn’t see, not with water in her orange eyes – and reared back, hoping beyond hope that Pyriel would be good for his part.

Pyriel Albarn

He was certainly ready for this, his whole body had tensed as he waited for the time he would need to act. They had their plan and it seemed a sound plan but that was all.part of his training. Form a plan and execute the plan and as long as everyone did their part it couldn't go wrong. That of course was a joke in Pyre's eyes as there had been plenty of times the plan had gone wrong in the past. When dealing with things that had a mind of their own there was no way to tell what they were going to do. As the alpha started to move again Pyriel stayed close not giving the fish and opening.

The last thing he wanted was to prolong this when the fish had to be stressed out by what was happening. The pale man wasn't foolish to Believe that fish didn't know what was happening to them. When she was close enough Pyriel's tail flicked with anticipation as he waited. He watched as her head went into the water as she made her attempt to catch the fish. In the back of his mind he hoped it would all go smoothly. He she reared back with the surgeon in her jaws he moved in clasping their query around where the gills were. The bit hard and hearing a crunch as his powerful jaws broke the fill plates.

It went as well as anyone could hope, at least for two wolves that didn’t fish regularly. Kyna had actually caught the fish without losing it, and her teeth and jaws were strong enough to keep ahold of the sturgeon in its death throes. It had to know – if not the shallows, than surely the pain. It was like the deer, or the rabbits. Kyna did not enjoy hunting for the sake of it; she did not mind providing for and caring for, but if something had to die, she vastly preferred to do it with brutal efficiency instead of playing like some wolves seemed to like.

Thankfully, it did not seem Pyriel was that kind of wolf.

As soon as she had it up, she could hear him moving, even if she could not see. A few moments later, she knew they were successful. There was a sickening crunch, and then the fish stopped moving, a dead weight in her jaws. It was all Kyna could do to drag their prize to the shower before dropping it in the flooded area – now, they could bring it back to Aurora Heights. “Good work. Thank you for your help.”

The pack would have a few more meals, at least.

Fin.

Sorry for the wait!  I wrapped it up so it wouldn't go stale.
