Maera Slayer

Maera waited patiently as everyone trickled in, trusting Leotie to take the lead on this one. Maera had never done the whole pack-hunt thing and had limited experience taking down bigger prey to a couple hunts here or there with Kerb or someone else if they were in the area. She smiled a little more when the plan was laid out, starting to fall into a hunting mode of sorts. Up the left with Treyah, got it… the children were going to do great, she had that feeling in her gut and she felt like she knew them both well enough to know they could do whatever they set their minds to… well, almost anything anyways.

She nodded to Leotie before briefly turning to Kerberos upon hearing his assignment with a soft and brief lick to the side of his cheek that spelled out be careful. She felt his job was more dangerous than hers, and there wasn’t going to be any injuries… that much she was certain on. Her chocolate eyes gazed around at their surroundings, waiting for everyone else to start to fall into position before she dared venture to her own. After all, she wouldn’t come in until the doe was separated and being run down already… she was ready to taste the meat, licking her lips in anticipation.

She listened to the plan, happily nodding along as Leotie spoke. Naira was glad that her children would be involved in this in a more active role than they might have otherwise taken. It was time they shouldered some responsibility and showed how grown up they truly were, but even with their postitions given the rest of the pack seemed reluctant to move out. If they just stood here gawking the stag would take his doe's and leave.

Confidently, the woman walked forward, seemingly disinterested in the herd, trying to get closer and closer with each step. She trusted that the boys would be on her heels, that they would move to head off the stag should he try to come towards her in any threatening manner, but her presence alone was enough to spook the does with their yearling fawns. As more wolves appeared, they began to move, the target Leotie had singled out easily spotted now the others were on the move and she would have to pick up her own pace or lose the lot of them. Naira postitioned herself between the straggler, sending her bolting in the opposite direction from the rest of the herd. Now all she would have to do is play her part to keep it moving, and stop it from getting back to the others until the rest of them closed in.

The boy wanted to contain his excitement, but he could not help beam at his father, and mother. Finally. They would have a real shot. He knew he better not screw it up or they would only have a harder time. The young Tainn had no intention of getting ahead of himself. He would prove he could listen, and do what was necessary even if it was a little boring. His tail rapidly beat as Kerb encouraged him, but like the rest his attention refocused on Leotie.

He didn't see any faults within her plan. Strategy was a new thing for him, and seemed to change with circumstance and available prey.
Why he was slightly disappointed not to be with Kerb,at least he would get to be with Trey, and Maera. Maera knew her stuff, and he would have little trouble following her lead.

They began, he stuck close to Treyah's side, eyes on Maera, ready to be directed. They would actually be herding the doe as his father and Kerb held the buck's attention. But, he didn't want to hinder their chance by getting in the way or something, and tried to match Maera's moves. The way she approached, and how she'd keep the deer in check with his mother and Treyah helping.

Triell Tainn
they say we're crazy, it's who we are

Leotie began explaining to them the little details of her plan. It was a bit of a different strategy, but he was happy, a bit proud even, she had come up with it on her own. Why he wasn't necessarily fond of keeping a buck at bay he would do it if it would keep others safe. If it would ensure they had a successful hunt. Between him and Kerberos they could handle the task. Eyes met his for a second, confidence in that look.

Briefly, he nosed his two children, then set off with Kerb.  He made a point to slow his breaths, drawing them in, and out as his fiery eyes settled on the deer in the distance. By then their presence was beginning to alarm the herd, and the others fell into action. A bark, he too picked up speed, drawing closer to his target. The buck would need to be kept busy, where he couldn't strike at the others. Hopefully with a bit of encouragement he would flee as the rest, and him and Kerb could help the others if need be.

His legs stretched, eating up the ground between predator and prey. Closer, a growl brushed his throat, and he snapped at the air by the buck's flank directing him in the same direction of the lucky ones who got to live. He made a point to remain at a safe distance should the deer retaliate. For now it was easy keeping his gait steady readying for the next feinted attack. It was only a deer, not an elk, he told himself.

Leotie Rhys

Looking over her packmates as she explained her plan Leotie felt that they all seemed to be okay with the plan. With it being the first time she'd done anything like this it helped her to feel she was doing a good job in her new role. Once she had finished explaining her eyes rested on Triell. She was worried about him facing the bull after his injury and she hoped he would say something to her if he was worried too. He moved out with the rest of the pack which she took as a sign he was ready to face the bull.

Leotie joined her pack mates as they all moved into position, Kerb and Triell going for the big bull and the rest of them going for the injured doe. Leotie had confidence that this would go well as it seemed to be starting well. Of course I the back of her mind was the thought that the last hunt had started off well and then tragedy. She pushed it out of her mind as she came up next to Reiko.

While Naira separated the doe from the rest of the pack Leotie tapped Reiko on the shoulder with her nose. She the gave him a motion with her head to indicate to follow her so they could take up the right flank. If would be their job to keep the doe from getting away to the right while Naira came up from behind to slow their target.

Treyah Tainn
won't you light my lonely way back home?
Treyah Tainn

So she was meant to run with Maera, she gave the woman a wide easy smile and moved closer to her flank, tail waving about enthusiastically, brows drawing down as her mother moved so confidently forward. It was a thing of beauty really, the way the deer milled so skittishly and so the now near yearling moved forward to the left flank of her mother but out wide enough that if the splintered doe tried to cut back into the rest of the herd she would find no way in this direction.

Things were getting noisy with the thundering of hooves and the frantic calls of mothers checking on their children. The cacophony was enough to get a decent dose of adrenalin pumping through her veins, but it seemed to do the same for their prey. With a warning kick of her hooves she began to hit the snow hard in her attempt at escape, the young wolf wanted to get closer, but she wasn't sure she would be fast enough through all this churned up snow. Already her breath was coming in ragged pants, barely moving any closer to the deer than she had been when the creature startled. But a dark shape in the corner of her eye urged her on, just a few more strides and she'd be poised to strike.

Naira took the plan forward, making it look easy by singling out their target. Getting her away from the others so they had less to worry about. The young Tainn didn't believe it was as effortless as it had appeared. But, his mother had years of experience, he coveted. Would he ever be able to do that? He couldn't imagine it would be any time soon. He still felt out of his skin in his large figure.

Still, he tried to keep up, even if unsure of himself. But, he could suddenly feel someone coming up beside him. Leotie. How had he forgotten to watch her position?

The guilt was pressed aside. At this point he felt lucky just to keep stride, slightly overwhelmed by all that was happening. The deer were on edge with wolves in their mists, and the sound of them calling to each other pulled at his nerves. The kerfuffle of it all forcing his ears to twitch as he tried to stifle the small pit of fear that nibbled at the edge. The second gestured him to follow her, and so he did. Happy to be told where he could be of use. So they took up the flank that needed protecting. He kept behind her, but not enough to leave a gap. If there was one thing he could do, it was to keep the deer between them.

Maera Slayer

Pack hunts, she decided, was just one giant half organized kerfuffle. It took far too much organization and not enough action, though she did understand that the orders and everyone setting themselves up for their role was important too. She took up the left right along Treyah once the blustering started and she noted Leotie’s signal, pushing herself to run faster in order to keep up with the doe, all worries lost in the intensity of the hunt. The young girl beside her was doing well, something she noticed and would likely comment on later… but now was not the time to encourage the girl on something she was already doing.

Maera was often intense in nature, and that was why her face remained focused and emotionless from the moment she put herself into place. She closed in on the deer to nip at its side, trying to draw blood and freak it out enough that it would use up the last of its energy so they could take it down. She had to harshly pull out of the way of a hoof coming back, it barely missing her face. She wasn’t prepared to let out a sigh of relief yet… not until it could no longer defend itself and its lifeless body was being used to keep them sustained.

Naira

With everyone in position but nobody making a real move outside of @Maera, Naira swore under her breath and pushed forward. If they didn't move the prey would escape and she was not going hungry because others were inexperienced. A sharp bark was unleashed to draw @Triell and @Kerberos in. They were now far enough away that the stag should leave them be and they needed those with more experience where it mattered. She was right in the firing line should the doe choose to kick out again but she didn't particularly care as her teeth closed firmly around the animals thigh.

As she bit down she attempted to use her weight to hold it in place, or drag it down to allow the others a chance to get a better hold on it. She managed to slow it to a walk, its panicked calls going unheeded by the rest of the herd who were probably half way across the wildwood by now. The coppery scent of blood filled the air and painted the pale fur of her chin and chest pink as each flail held less and less strength to it. Seeming to realise the weight at its back wasn't budging it mustered the strength for a glancing blow to her ribcage. It was enough to make her loosen her grip but not enough to stop her from throwing herself right back into the fray. She would feel the pain and deal with her injuries once her children were fed.

Kerberos Rigel
kinda poo srry
Kerberos followed Triell's moves. His fur fluffing up as he harshly barked with his alpha. The buck didn't seem like he wanted to fight for the doe they were taking. It was a relief, to say the least. He did his best to make sure that it truly wanted nothing to do with the pack, though. More barks and clicks of his teeth just for good measure.

Somewhere in the commotion, the call of Naira rang out towards the tawny second and Triell. It confused him but he wasn't going to make him ignore it. Obviously, they needed them. Once he could be positive the buck would keep running Kerberos shifted ways and headed towards the deer. His teeth snapped near the prey's shoulder once he was close enough. With so many of them now it ought to be an easy job to finish. Especially since none of them were exactly petite.

His teeth pulled at the skin of deer's shoulder. A prick of blood flowing forth was a good sign for them. The sooner this was over the better. He was ready to eat make sure everyone wasn't severely hurt. So he jumped forth again, teeth hoping to clamp onto something.
