Year in Review
In Character

More so than any other year before it, the 2015-2016 year was about a new generation of wolves in a way that has never happened for (and if it were up to our Board Wide Plot “A Plague of Peccary” it would have been a new generation of pigs). As breeding season came to a close, we began to see sunset on many well established leaders and historic packs. But if the end of 2015 was about death, 2016 turned into a year of rebirth and rebuilding through the rise of this “new generation.” As we begin a new and exciting era, this year we take a look back on the tumultuous change that brought us to this point.

At the beginning of RoW year VI, these were our leaders: Triell and Spieden, Iopah and Koda, Borden and Jaysyek, Namid and Vespertio, Maksim and Kisla, Minka and Gent, Nina and Mirren, Phineas and Aesire, Ash and Narime, and Elettra and Angier. Only 6 of those 20 wolves still maintain their leadership, the others have either vanished, died, or relinquished their post out of old age. Many of these wolves have been an integral part of Relic Lore’s history: Elettra, Triell, Borden, Koda, Jaysyek, Kisla, Nina, Phineas, Ash, Narime, and Angier have lived in the realm for nearly half a decade, and truly represent the “old world RoW.”

As breeding season came to a close, the strength began to fade from many of the older leaders. In the southwest, Angier and Elettra’s began to show their signs of old age. Borden, who had returned to Relic Lore an old man sick at heart was finally slipping away. Wolves began to vanish without a trace from the wolves of Whisper Caverns until they were forced to disband. Up in the northwest, there was talk of Nina stepping down in Secret Woodlands, and the wolves of Round Stone Crest lost their leader Minka to an unforeseeable brain tumor. Out east, Maksim began to feel overwhelmed by old injuries and illness and turned over the leadership to Lachesis, Triell left the helm of Oak Tree Bend in search of his lost lover, and Koda of Broken Timber Pines left on a journey of his own. On the mountain, Silent Moon Plateau had both its leaders taken from it suddenly: an accident claiming Aesire and a heart attack taking Phineas. By the end of the winter and the beginning of a new breeding season everything was uncertain in Relic Lore and the pigs were jumping at any chance to threaten the wolves.

But from the uncertainty, the new generation appeared and began to take over the discarded roles of their predecessors. Change did not come easy to everyone. Some shifts were peaceful like the baton pass from Nina to Aideen in Secret Woodlands, but many of the new leaders found themselves faced with difficulty. After the death of his father, Rook struggled to cope with the loss and was forced to lean on Veho for support, giving his mate the title of leader instead of keeping it for himself. Gent in Round Stone Crest found himself challenged by Minka’s children and deserted by wolf after wolf. Drestig in Oak Tree Bend was confronted with an identity crisis and a desire for his own fate. Morganna in Willow Ridge was challenged at every step of the way by her older, conservative uncle Nicolo.

Not all wolves were content to remain in the shadow of the old generation: Gent, Morganna, and Drestig left their packs in search of something that could be theirs. With year VI coming to a close and the dust beginning to settle we’re finally starting to catch a glimpse of the changes to come: more drama, of course, but also a generation of younger wolves who won’t settle for less.
