A late season snow storm takes Relic Lore by surprise, take cover!

i am noble too, oh Lord of Wolves

STARLIGHT WAS MY MOTHER.
AND MY FATHER WAS THE DARK.

It was not often that Eclypse evaded her usual sleep schedule. For after all, she proved to be an ideal baby so far. Yet perhaps it was the sudden chill that rolled over the mountains that evening. How it seemed to continue to chill, lower and lower as the sun continued its descent.

Her teeth had chattered softly as she tried to burrow herself deep in the plush of her mother's side. Only surely everyone's coat had begun to prepare for summer and not this surprise winter night. So who could blame the young Eastfall-Slayer babe for the way she began to squirm and fuss when nothing felt like enough? Amplified by her lack of good sleep this evening.

She only continued to grow terribly fussed as the breeze kicked up outside and the cold seemed to brew further into the den.

The weather worried her… the fact that it snowed even now worried her because of the small bundle of life that she had brought into the world. She had seen the cold and the illness that came with it take lives, and as a result she found herself fiercely protective of the child. She would not fail her as she felt she had failed her other children.

The breeze kicked in and Aquene found herself rising, shifting so that her body might act as a shield from the wind for Eclypse. “It’s okay, Ely.” She assured softly as she ran her nose along her daughter’s neck. She would protect her, and keep her safe.

“Do you want to hear a story?” She asked, a soft expression in her eyes as she asked the girl. She enjoyed telling the girl stories, particularly those from her mother. She found she missed her more and more every day.

A definining moment, a thing she would treasure forever even if would never remember the start.

Her mother a shield against the world in this moment. A warm blanket draped over her in metaphor. The soft vibrations of her mother's voice that warmed the air too. Her fussiness seemed tamed for now with promises of shelter and entertainment. She was not a simple girl, but she would always find a grand joy in simple things.

Mmmm, She hummed in the back of her throat as she scooched across the ground, pressed herself tight against her mother. A story were words that always promised a good thing to follow. She very much wanted that, even if her focus still remained on survival in very basic ways.

She did not know that she would never die with the protection of her mother, but she had learned that the world could very literally be cold.

Aquene would find herself smiling as the girl hummed back, content to hear a story even if she may not remember it… it would be one that Aquene would tell her often, to ensure that it was a part of her history growing up. Her limbs moved slightly so she was curled more around her daughter, shielding her and keeping her warm as she had done with those who had come before her. There was a softness in her eyes as she gently began to coo.

“There once was a light called the South Star… it existed as the brother of the North Star.” There would be a pause as she glanced outside the den, which would point in the direction that it normally was. “The South Star was brave and valiant, guiding lost wolves to greener lands and protecting them from harm… but one day, the star met a young wolf named Luna. Luna was a beautiful creature, and she only traveled at night because the South Star guided her.” She would smile softly, reminisce in her eyes as she recalled the first time in her memory that her mother had told this story to her.

“The South Star and Luna were constant companions, and she would always talk to him. He would guide her on so many adventures… thought mountains, and rivers… but one night clouds shrouded the sky, and Luna found herself lost!” There was a lightly shocked expression on her features before she continued.

“And when the clouds emerged, the star could not find Luna… and so he looked, day and night for her, as often as he could… and when he found her, she had appeared in the sky beside him, his constant companion. Others would call her the moon.

If snow drifted in, it was lost by the shoulder's of her mother, like a mountain that shielded her from beyond. The chill subsided with each word spoken too.

And although Eclypse could not say every word or would even remember each detail, she liked the cadence. How her mother had lighted features at some points where her voice rose enough to keep the girl from falling fully asleep.

"Mmmm," Another hum but this one with purpose and force behind it. "Mmoooon." Like a mewling howl more than a proud declaration. Yet she felt plenty strong in what word she had just managed to eek out into the cold den air.

She would have to repeat the story, ensure that her daughter knew it just as she had ensured her other children had. She found that she enjoyed telling stories, that it brought her joy to see the children’s faces light up whenever she told tales. Adults had less amazement and wonder, and were full of responsibility and stress.

In many ways, she longed to be a child herself again… but she knew it was not realistic.

“That’s right, darling… mooooon.” She drew out the word as she placed a gentle lick to the top of her daughter’s head, a soft chuckle escaping her. “Moon is also grandma.” Though in a different way, though she wondered if her daughter would be able to say the word with it being two syllables.

Grandma was not so unfamiliar a sound.

Yet she had never attempted to say the word, for all its grandness. It was not so easy to stumble into saying it either! Still it seemed like she tried with the start of baby growls for grrrrnn and ending it with small howls of mmooooo.

It would be neither properly composed or right, but one could not ignore her effort either!

"Grrrr! Mooooon!"

The tiredness she felt with the soft chill from outside seemed to hardly damper her mood in this moment. Legs stretched to shove growing paws into her mother's side, face scrunched with warm humor.

She couldn’t help but stifle a chuckle as her daughter attempted the word, and instead sounded as though she might try to fight the moon by herself. She would gently nose her daughter, laying her head overtop the small frame to further protect her from the cold as she noted the way her daughter’s body released tension in a display of tiredness, her paws shoving into her side which caused a wince from Aquene, still tender from the pains of labor.

She would hum softly, humming a tune she believed would help lure her daughter into more of a peaceful slumber… something that the girl could always use more of. She was growing, and that meant she most certainly needed her beauty sleep. “Rest now my child, for soon we’ll away, into the calm and the quiet.” The words floated in a gentle melody to her daughter.

Sleep was not so terrible an idea, she liked to think.

Nestled here in the warmth of her mother and only touched in the barest ways by the snowy breeze beyond. Things she would not remember later in life, but that mattered greatly in the here and now that she experienced.

It was not like her to fight sleep or fuss when the time to be put to bed had come.

So with the soft melodies of her mother and the grooming touches to her head, she yawned loud and wide.

Already her form relaxed. Soon tiny snores and wiggling legs of dreaming would follow.

Her daughter drifted to sleep, tiny snores making Aquene smile as she continued to let her slumber, waiting for Nash to arrive back to the den with food or for rest so she might get the warmth of a close body against her just as she had provided for her daughter. She couldn’t wait for winter’s harsh winds to fade off the mountain, where they tended to fade last.

It would bring about so much peace, and an easier time should the gods be willing. She never knew what the universe had in store for them next, she just hoped that whatever it was, it was good.
