The Death of Peace of Mind

There was no rhyme or reason behind where the marbled youth let his paws lead today after hunkering down for a bit at Fisher's Split to regain some of his strength sapped by the snowstorm he had managed to get himself stuck in journeying back to this place. Unlike prior times, neither the salty old man Loach nor anyone else in their makeshift family of misfits was there to offer the luxury of body heat to ward off winter's chilling touch. What a spoiled little thing he had become, alas, it didn't take long for survival skills to brush off their dust and kick back into gear much in the ways he was forced to after the disappearance of his mother. Oh, how he did miss the touch of another, though. Something to this day he still wouldn't openly admit aloud. To be scorned by the one who gave you life formed scars on the heart not even time could heal.

A glance skyward with pale green eyes took note of the overcast clouds that floated by through the gaps in the forest canopy as he trotted along the snowy vegetation, silently thanking whatever gods that the chances of him being caught alone in another snowstorm were very slim, but not entirely none. It was the sound of flowing water up ahead that mostly caught the young man's attention, opting to see what it offered in terms of viable fish once his dark paws settled along the damp edge. Silence reigned supreme spare the bubbling of the creek and the occasional chattering of tree dwelling critters. Claw, focused and as still as a statue once his sights settled on a shadowy figure beneath the waters surface slowly making its way closer to the waters edge.
