He hadn't meant to flee this far, but his legs and hammering heart wouldn't slow until he was back on that familiar shoreline once again. Just feeling the sandy quality of the earth beneath his toes and breathing in the scent of still waters was a comfort, but still not enough to keep back the tsunamis of emotion within him. Ryder tried to pace, but his limbs gave up and instead he flopped gracelessly down upon the ground, miserably sniffling.
Grief hit hard, something he'd never truly felt before. It brought out streams of tear and heaving sobs, shook his lanky frame and pained rather than relieved his heart. Instead of finding peace here, he sunk deeper into his hurt, despairing over whatever had tormented his mother so, over the loss of his idol, of what felt like the end of childhood altogether. Of stability, of believing he was actually anyone's first priority.
Perhaps it was the dramatics of being a teenager, but for Ryder every cut was just as real as it was deep.
