A forceful gust of wind unexpectedly breathes life into smoldering ashes, igniting the hottest embers and setting a patch of tall grass ablaze. The flames begin to engulf the tinder-dry vegetation, the fire painting the landscape in a brilliant display of orange. For a fleeting moment, the flames leap and intertwine and heat crackles in the air. Yet, as quickly as it began, the flames run out of fuel as the grass patch turns to ash, flames sputtering until they finally crackle out. An eerie calm returns, silence suddenly sounding very loud, smoke pouring out of where the grass had once grown.

It was the smell that drew her curiosity. She was no longer a stranger to the scent of smoke, but this was different. It was stronger and thicker, and carried with it more heat than what she'd grown used to. Keeping her head low to avoid the worst of it Llinnea followed it - only to abruptly halt in surprise when she saw the bright orange tongues licking at the sky as they consumed the grass.
She had never experienced fire before, but knew what she was looking at was dangerous. She took several steps backwards, ears pressed against her head, and shook her head rapidly. Then, just as quickly, the flames vanished. She blinked. Was that normal? Would it come back? Thirst for learning won out over her caution for the first time in a long time and Llinnea crept forward, nose twitching. The air burned of course, but the smell was a new kind of acrid. She stopped at the edge of the burned area, hesitant to walk into the ashy ring.
